Cindy McCain Owes About $7,000 In Back Property Taxes Due To A Postal Error

This, of course, necessitates a breathless Newsweek article with no fewer than four reporters on the by-line.

Apparently the back taxes are for a property where an elderly aunt of Cindy’s lives.  The taxes weren’t paid because the financial trust that manages the property hasn’t been getting the property tax bills in the mail.

Which is clearly a blight on the character of Cindy McCain, right?  Meanwhile, the fact that Michelle Obama’s employer got a $1 million earmark from her husband has yet to garner any major media coverage.

Certainly Newsweek hasn’t assigned four of its intrepid reporters to the matter yet.

That’s because they’re actively digging for dirt on Cindy McCain, whereas they’re hoping they’re not forced to print anything derogatory against Obama!

Digging for dirt?

She stole drugs from her charity.  Have you heard anything about that in the MSM.

She was part of the Keating 5 scandal as a bookkeeper who couldn’t find receipts.  Have you heard anything about that?

The MSM has totally treated her with kid gloves compared to Michelle.

They run an anal exam on everything the McCain’s have ever been associated with.

On the other hand, they will take the sewerage of the the Obama’s, box it up, put it on their copy desk and swear it is a bouquet of flowers.

Anytime a millionaire does not pay his/her taxes, is newsworthy.

Ed Morrissey has a very concise summary over at Hot Air:

Let’s recap.  Cindy McCain keeps her finances completely separate from those of her husband in accordance with a pre-nuptial agreement.  At her own expense, she set up a trust to house her elderly aunt in a La Jolla condo, which (being from SoCal myself) I can assure readers is a pretty generous gesture.  Like most people, she arranged to have property taxes through a third party; most of us have an escrow company making the payments through the mortgage bills, while she had the trust do it.  Unfortunately, the trust gave the county the wrong address and didn’t receive the bills to pay them, and didn’t follow up.  Since Mrs. McCain doesn’t live at the property, she didn’t know a problem existed.

As he pput it earlier in the article: a nothingburger of a story.

Class envy you say Robert108? Leona Helmsley comes to mind. IMO she is your kindred spirit.

As usual, when you attempt to speak for me, you are totally mistaken.  LH was guilty of criminal behavior, and was imprisoned for it.  What part of that are you trying to exploit for your usual class envy politics?
Your screed against Cindy McCain is pathetic.  The Obamas are guilty of real corruption with the Rezko land deal, and you are trying to bash someone for a clerical error. Shame on you!

I am sure she will pay this mistake by someone else quickly as I did recently, even paying the 104% interest without balking.  We are still waiting for:  Mr. foolish clown in Minnesota, Air America’s millionaire, taking hundreds of thousands from a charity for children, Obama, and Mr. Democratic-socialist party TV mouth piece on MSNBC, keith who owes much more.  The big difference is that conservatives pay their bills.  They acknowledge mistakes and tell The Truth.  They have morals, they can qualify for military service.

You’re absolutely right. Between raising a family, running and expanding a successful business, cleaning up land-mines in third would countries, working with charities to correct oral deformities in under-privileged children, and adopting children from Mother Theresa, Mrs. McCain should have plenty of time to be her elderly aunt’s personal caregiver.

Plus you’re ignoring other issues. How do you know that the aunt didn’t want to live in Arizona near the McCains? Maybe she preferred southern CA. You also don’t know the level of involvement she had in her aunt’s care. Just because she did not personally manage her aunt’s finances doesn’t mean she isn’t an active participant in her aunt’s care.

And also, I really don’t care what you would do. She’s already done more than you have.

Reread my post. I am opposed to set it and forget it.

And the fact that Cindy McCain has set up a financial trust does not automatically imply that.
I had a great aunt who was very independent and lived on her own into her nineties. She lived where she pleased without assistance. Had a rich relative given her financial assistance, she would not have welcomed any interference with the way she lived.

Show me more than evidence of a financial trust to prove Cindy McCain is “neglecting” her aunt, or that her aunt requires care at all! Cindy’s generosity does not equal her aunt’s incompetence or neglect!

She got her aunt a house, and set up a trust to take care of the bills. I wouldn’t be surprised if she has a trust for her other properties too. That she has taken care of her aunt’s bills is pretty damned generous.

Not that this means that’s ALL she does for her aunt. Nor does coming around once a year to pay property taxes mean “you’re taking care” of your loved one.

I’ve had trouble with property tax notice delivery myself--bought the house, the county didn’t update the records (despite being told no less than three times if I remember correctly), and then the assessor had the gall to tell me that I was at fault and would have to pay a penalty.

I promptly informed him that whatever the law said, he was a thief.

I guess if I ever go into politics, someone is going to use late payment of property tax against me, and there will be an argument much like this one trying to pin something that’s not my fault as a character flaw of mine.
