Christmas Comes Earlier Than Ever

Earlier this week I was over at my Grandma’s house picking up my daughter after work and I noticed this laying in amongst her mail. In case you’re not interested in clicking I’ll tell you what it is: The Christmas 2006 J.C. Penny’s catalog.
Christmas. In August.
We’re still a month away from Halloween and a little less than two months away from Thanksgiving and already the Christmas marketing has begun.
Now I’m not normally one to get all hot and bothered about the commercialization of Christmas (I am, after all, a staunch capitalist and a godless atheist to boot), but this Christmas stuff is getting a bit crazy.
Even up here in North Dakota we’re still enjoying hot summer days, yet we’ve got models wearing sweaters and Santa caps in our mailboxes.
It’s almost enough to make a guy say “bah humbug.”

I’ve always thought it was a plot to make Christmas year-round so that they don’t need to have after Christmas sales. (I always buy myself presents AFTER xmas.)

Will there still be a Thanksgiving Sale? Or even a Halloween Sale? I always buy things after the holiday if I can wait…

My boyfriend has this wonderful idea to keep pressing the button to make a fake santa at the mall sing every day until after it disappears (or whatever happens to make christmas songs 4-5 months in advance)…

I wonder if this strategy helps xmas sales or hurts them…how many more people buy these things so early, just so they can hide them? Sure I can see with a catalogue that you might want to beat holiday mail. But in a store, it’s completely different.

I always figured Christmas season started on December 26th.

I love Christmas music. I could listen to it all year, except for the funny looks I get.

It’s never too early to start shopping for your favorite guest blogger.

I think this is a part of what some marketers call Buzz marketing. We know that unless these guys guys dont start bulding hype from now on. They are not gonna reach the cresendo.. by Thanksgiving. Its true a few people feel its too early. But I guess creating the Ambience is equally important to make big sales this holiday season
