Chicago Sun-Times Columnist Says Obama’s Senate Seat Is A “Black’ Senate Seat

And thus should only go to someone who is black.

Betcha didn’t know that the elected office of Senator of the United States of America was a color coded position? Apparently, Laura Washington of the Chicago Sun-Times thinks it is, anyway, because she is warning that Obama’s “black Senate seat” will be lost because of this mess with Governor Rod Blagojevich getting arrested for trying to sell that “black seat” to the highest bidder.
In hers headlined “Black leaders see Senate seat being hijacked,” Washington is ostensibly reporting on what black community leaders and politicos in Chicago are saying about who should be appointed to fill Obama’s vacant seat
Can you imagine what the outcry would be like if, say, Atlanta’s Neal Boortz suggested that Saxby Chambliss’ Senate Seat was a “white” seat and should only go to a white man? Boortz would be off the air in a heartbeat.
But a news reporter suggesting that a seat belongs to blacks? Totally accepted.
I’m wondering why skin color matters. White. Black. Asian. Hispanic. Who cares?
Obama’s Senate seat should be filled by someone who best represents the voters of Illinois. All of the voters, whatever their skin color.
Because we’re never going to get past the racial issues if we don’t, in fact, move past them.

Although I think it’s a dumb way to say what she said, she is making a more important point. There has been only THREE black senators since 1900 and there are currently none.

That is what elections are for, my friend. Has the lunacy of entitlement expanded to holding political office as well? The seat is only “black” in as much as it serves Ms. Washington’s argument. She cites absolutely no constitutional precedent to support it, however. Representative political bodies like the Black Caucus are assembled voluntarily to advance their collective agenda. Ms. Washington’s idea that a “black seat” is necessary merely reflects the soft racism of diminished expectations. Is she suggesting that entitlement is the only way blacks can achieve political office? I thought that the election of Mr. Obama put that argument to rest once and for all? His election should serve to marginalize professional race-baiters like Ms. Washington. Whatever will we talk about now?

Since you insist on being ignorant to the happenings in the real world, I will waste my time on enlightening you. Blacks have a whole different culture than a lot of mainstream America. BET serves as an outlet for music, happenings at historically black colleges and universities and cultural events that are not covered on mainstream TV. What is wrong with that? Many immigrants to this country keep in touch with their home nations via satellites. The purpose of a “black” seat is to insure that blacks have a voice in the legislature. There are well qualified whites who have no idea how blacks are impacted in this nation. And it is not all about getting a handout from the government. In a perfect world, it wouldn’t matter. We don’t live in a perfect world.
