Cash For Clunkers: Now With Triple The Funding!

Last night I posted about the $1 billion federal “cash for clunkers” subsidy, which was supposed to last to the end of this year, being used up in less than a week. Today comes news that Congress is tripling the funding for the ridiculous program which will serve to subsidize overconsumption of new cars and will drive up prices in the used car markets as the cars getting traded in are destroyed.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The House has voted to rush an additional $2 billion into the popular but financially strapped “cash for clunkers” car purchase program.
The bill was approved on a vote of 316-109. House members acted within hours of learning from Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood that the program was running out of money.
Called the Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS, the program is designed to help the economy and the environment by spurring new car sales. Car owners can receive federal subsidies of up to $4,500 for trading in their old cars for new ones that achieve significantly higher gas mileage.

The idea that we can help the economy by deficit spending on subsidies so that people can buy cars they don’t need with car loans they also don’t need is ridiculous. The idea that we are helping the environment by subsidizing demand for new cars that wouldn’t exist otherwise is ridiculous.
And on top of it all, let’s not forget that the destruction of these traded-in cars reduces the total number of used cars available on the market. Thus driving up prices for used car shoppers who, last time I checked, tended not to be very rich.
Our government is spending tax dollars it doesn’t have to subsidize new cars for people who don’t need them. And rather than learning their lesson from this boondoggle falling flat on its face less than a week after being implemented, Congress is appropriating more money to the program.
And why not? It’s just other people’s money.

reduces the total number of used cars available on the market.

And reduces the availability (and ups the price) of salvage parts that the poor rely on more heavily than the rich for some strange and obscure reason!

Destroying the most valuable part of salvage cars does nothing good for the economy or for the poorer elements of society who might depend on them.

The economy is pretty good around here, but I don’t think it’s time for me to get a new car loan.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

It really only makes sense for people that were ready to buy a new car.

Really, falling flat on its face? 250,000 cars sold in 6 days is falling flat on its face? The program did exactly what it was design to do let people with old gas guzzlers, that are worth nothing on the open market get the ability to buy a new car. The money they save in gas will also help the pay the payment, what a great idea. I posted this about the initial program so you can triple the numbers now.

    250,000 cars that drive 12,000 miles a year(average).

That is 3,000,000,000 miles driven(3Billion)per year.

3Billion/(average of 15 mpg)=200Milliom gallons gas per year.

These cars, trucks have to get at least 10 miles per gallon better mileage than the ones that were traded in.

3Billion/(average of 25mpg)=120Million gallons gas per year.

That is 80 Million gallons of gas per year
Or 220,000 gallons of gas per day.

One barrel (42 gallons) of crude oil, when refined, yields approximately 19.6 gallons of finished motor gasoline.

    220,000/(lets call it 20)=11,000

That is 11,000 barrels of oil PER DAY we will not be importing into the US within a month.

So now it will be 33,000 barrels of crude PER DAY that we will not be importing, thanks to Obama. and 750,000 new cars driving down the road emitting fewer pollutants, saving their owners cash every mile they drive.

saving their owners cash every mile they drive.

Ever made payments on a new car?? You might not realize that you also a required to carry full coverage insurance on a new car, rather than just liability, which those of us who drive “clunkers” carry. My insurance would increase around $100/month. Payments, which I currently don’t have, would be a minimum of $300/month. If I drive 12k miles with my pickup, getting 15mpg, my annual fuel spending is $2,000. Trading up to a pickup that gets 20mpg (this qualifies for the bonus cash), and driving the same number of miles, I would spend $1,500 for gas. So I saved $500 on fuel, but with the $400 in increases monthly payments, I spent $4,800 to save that $500. My net loss for the year is $4,300. The problem is too many liberals in Washington go by Buzz’s math formulas, instead of common sense.

The money they save in gas will also help the pay the payment, what a great idea

Which is also tax revenue lost based on fewer gallons of gas purchased which will lead to a higher or new tax somewhere else! What a great idea.

Why should we stop at cars. Why not boats, appliances, old furniture, and etc. Hell let’s just keep spending money we don’t have, we’ll just raise taxes somewhere down the road, but that won’t matter to us then! /sarcasm

It is now time to when you receive your paycheck, turn it over, endorse it, stick in an envelope, put a stamp on it, and mail it to Washington! These fools will never learn.

It is time for a house cleaning in Washington. Even if these bozos start voting right we can’t trust them. The next time we aren’t looking they will attempt all these same failed programs. It is absolutely ridiculous that these guys end up multi-millionaires while drinking at the tax pay faucet. Retire them and return to a republic form of gov’t.

Unfortunately you are in the same boat as other scab republicans here. A shit job, shit truck , and no education. For starters you would have to get 10 mpg better to qualify for the program. So your savings would be and extra 300.00. Next you are assuming your old truck will need no maintenance work, which would be covered by a new car warranty. And your shit-box that has no coverage on it would be gone if you get in an accident. You are also gaining assets by having a newer car, truck.

To top it off just imagine how impressed your cousin will be at the reunion when you drive up in your new 4×4, you will be looking slicker than cum on a gold tooth! How could she say no to you then?

Any “electrician” who needs to join a union isn’t much of an electrician. A professional would start his own business. It’s not rocket science.

ive got to believe the only people buying new cars are the same people that would have done it anyway. people that drive crap cars simply dont make impulse buys of $25,000.

Oh, much better. Spending 4800 to save 800 makes much more sense.

Next you are assuming your old truck will need no maintenance work

In the past 3 years, I’ve spent less than $300 on maintenance. If I total it, I’ll go buy another $1000 clunker that will get me through the next 5 years. No big deal. In the long run, I save money, and I don’t have to worry about scratching the paint or putting a dent in it.

Isn’t this the same thing as subsidizing the very auto companies that Obama owns?

  • Jordan

It doesn’t matter if they dole more money. They problem is still the backlog. Read this article: The Real Reason for the “Cash for Clunkers” Suspension. The ex car salesman blog shares exactly why they stopped the program. Even reports that some sales managers are calling asking for the money back because they were denied the rebate when the final paperwork was submitted but their car was already ruined by dumping a solution in the engine. They now have no car. Scary. See: http://tinyurl.com/ml9sdo

I heard this morning some congressman/senator said this is a lifeline for the auto companies. Didn’t we just bail them out? (besides Ford)

  • robert108

I heard this morning some congressman/senator said this is a lifeline for the auto companies.

It’s also a good reason to suspect any Dem claims of growth in the auto market. Smoke and mirrors.

Obama lies about everything. OOOhhh wait he is a politician.

  • sayanything-2483

With all these “clunker” owners who probably have no auto payment jumping into the new car market and taking on a payment, with tax hikes, inflation and more unemployment just around the corner, I just might come out of retirement and start a REPO company. Business will be BOOOOOMING!!!!

  • sayanything-2483

Be careful, they will just start a new scam to bailout buyers who bought cars from bailed out auto companies.

The tax payers won’t have any $$$ left to fund it. A REPO company is sounding better and better.
The depression will start when China calls in it’s markers.
