Byron Dorgan Wants More Oil Drilling On Indian Reservations But Not Anywhere Else

A reader tips me to this story about Byron Dorgan criticizing the Bureau of Indian Affairs for standing in the way of oil drilling on Indian lands:

Washington (AP) Democratic Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota says “incompetence” at the Bureau of Indian Affairs is stalling energy development on tribal lands in his state.

Dorgan is chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. He says he wants Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne to deal with the problem immediately.

The Interior Department didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Dorgan says the Fort Berthold reservation is missing out on an oil boom that’s benefiting other parts of the state.

The reservation in western North Dakota lies atop part of the Bakken shale formation, parts of which have demonstrated great promise recently for oil production.

That’s an interesting stance for the Senator to take given that he a) has voted against drilling for oil in ANWR several times b) voted against allowing an expansion of off-shore drilling and c) voted against allowing the development of Colorado’s oil shale deposits.

So how come Dorgan supports more drilling for oil on North Dakota’s Indian reservations, but no drilling for oil in ANWR or Colorado or off the coast of America?

Who needs the ANWR when we have the Bakken?  Dorgan should be promoting his state more than he is.

Then he can take sole credit for it like he always does.

Dorgan should be promoting his state more than he is.

He promotes the state of Virginia, where he spends almost all his time, very well I hear.

Let’s see.  Maybe Dorgan can up his vote from the rez from 90% to maybe 95% for him next election.  You can never buy too many votes.

Why should the Indians miss out on the oil boom!? This will bring prosperity and jobs to the reservations and make them self-sufficient. But then you conservatives wouldn’t be able to use the Indians as poster children for failed social policies. We can’t have that now, can we!

I think you’re missing the point.  First, I’m not against oil development on the reservations.  I just think Dorgan’s a hypocrite for supporting it on the reservations and in North Dakota but not in ANWR or in Colorado.

Second, no conservatives like using Indians and their reservations as examples for the failures of socialism.  We’d just as soon the socialism be ended so that the Indians could thrive and prosper.

What’s so wrong with that?

Rob I think it is hypocritical, Dorgan is playing up to two bases with doing this. First he is proving that he is out of touch by voting with the Enviornmentalists and second he is pandering for votes. If it is good enough to drill on the reservations it is good enough to drill in the artic. You have got to love good ole Dorganoff…

Recently I saw a story on TV that said people were for drilling and not for higher taxes. The GOP needs to take advantage of these two facts.

That is not a bad idea.  They are recognized as a separate nation, have the largest gambling casinos why not drill for oil on their own land.  No problems with environmental waccos.
