Bush to Lift Offshore Drilling Ban
The White House has announced that President Bush will rescind the Executive Order banning off-shore drilling for oil. The president’s announcement will be carried live on CNBC at 1:30pm EDT.
It’s a start.

I would consider that a good start. Why didn’t he do this earlier?

Now we gotta start turning the screws to get Congress to remove their ban…
I think you’re are right, lets get after it and get drilling.

Call him and ask him. It would be very interesting to hear his explanation.
Global Market.....the extra oil will be negligible and will go for market prices which will not be any less than they are now.
More money for the oil barons. Do you really think they are going to sell this oil to Americans for cheaper than market price?
CatMow - Global Market.....the extra oil will be negligible and will go for market prices which will not be any less than they are now.
This goes against everything we know about the oil market. What really happens is that the oil speculators look into the future and hedge their bets on what the supply will be in the future. More supply - the price goes down.
More money for the oil barons.
“Oil barons” AKA the seventy-something percent of Americans who are invested in the stock market through various means; 401K plans, retirement funds, and the like.
Class envy doesn’t work around these parts.
Do you really think they are going to sell this oil to Americans for cheaper than market price?
Who was saying that?
Simple straw men tactics are generally seen for what they are around these parts.
Do you really think they are going to sell this oil to Americans for cheaper than market price?
Of course not. The hope is that the market price itself will drop.
"Of course not. The hope is that the market price itself will drop.”
My point being, the amount of oil they will get by drilling offshore will not be enough to make the significant drop in gas prices that all you Republicans are banking on.
The oil companies already have plenty of land in the Gulf of Mexico to drill on, but don’t want to because they can’t make as much profit doing so as they would drilling offshore.

CatMow,
The Gulf is “offshore” so I am not sure what point you are trying to make.
You haven’t fallen for the “they’ve got leases for acreage that they’re not using” meme have you?
Sure there is a large area that remains under lease but is not actively being drilled. That is because a) there is no oil there or b) it is not cost effective to drill to get the oil that is there.
"b) it is not cost effective to drill to get the oil that is there. “
Bingo, the oil companies know they can’t make as much profit drilling in the land they already have so they want to drill offshore of the east and west coast.
Bush is an oil man so why wouldn’t he support higher profits for oil companies?
CatMow,
I get the distinct impression that you have never owned a business.
Am I correct?
Would you spend $150 per barrel to recover oil that you would only be able to resell for $140?

I have not read or seen ANY reports that they would be selling at a loss if they drilled in the gulf.

You are showing a incredible lack of knowledge and understand on economics, markets and oil discovery/production. If even part of what you comment was true, gas would have been $4-5 per gallon long ago like it was in Europe 30 years ago. The reason the price per gallon was lower was because at that time we produced 50-60 percent of what we need, and the supply exceeded the demand world wide. Now we have to import 70 percent while the demand has esculated because of the modern industrialization of countries like India and China, a combination that was sure to drive up the price. A balance of the oil supply/demand with increased production in our country should see a drop in the oil/gas price.
You don’t have to be a moron to be a liberal Democrat but it sure helps.
Whose hope?
“Of course not. The hope is that the market price itself will drop.”
Saying that that some oil from ANWR or offshore may be exported or it wont lower gas prices is a very stupid reason for not drilling there! Take an class in economics. If we export a million barrels from ANWR and import a million barrels from somewhere else, it costs us nothing. If we import a million barrels and export none it costs us 140 million dollars! Research and development of alternative energy sources is great and we should do that, but as long as we are useing more oil than we are producing we need to drill as much as possible. If we end up with more oil than we need we can sell it to China to pay for all our imported lead painted toys!
Democrats say drilling would not help because we wont get the oil for 10 years, a great argument they have been making for a decade - jay Leno
All the oil we buy is worth more to us than we pay for it, otherwise we wouldn’t buy it. Buying oil isn’t a “transfer of wealth”; that’s just a leftie lie. We are buying a productive asset.
Research and development of alternative energy sources is great and we should do that…
Only if it produces more than it costs, and is competitive with our present energy sources.
