Bush Tells Brit Hume: I Asked What Tools Were Available To Interrogate Khalid Sheik Mohammed

Which, of course, prompts the liberals to proclaim: BUSH PERSONALLY AUTHORIZED TORTURE OF KHALID SHEIK MOHAMMED!!!
Here’s the video:

BUSH: One such person who gave us information was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. … And I’m in the Oval Office and I am told that we have captured Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the professionals believe he has information necessary to secure the country. So I ask what tools are available for us to find information from him and they gave me a list of tools, and I said are these tools deemed to be legal? And so we got legal opinions before any decision was made.

Now, we can argue about whether or not water boarding (which we know KSM was subjected to) is an effective interrogation tactic, but calling it “torture” is just plain ridiculous. Making someone scared, making them feel like they might drown, is not torture. It may be uncomfortable. It may be terrifying. But it’s not torture.
And, frankly, if we’re at a point where we can’t even stomach pouring water on the face of the mastermind of 9/11 as a way to get actionable intelligence from him to protect this country we’re in a lot of trouble.

    Hannitized:

    extreme mental distressm &heellip; intense feelings of suffering &heellip;

By that definition, going to a scary movie is torture. Don’t you think being detailed against your will would create “extreme mental distress”? Hell for some of you BDS sufferers, having Bush in office for eight years certainly inflicted “intense feelings of suffering”. Spanking a child under this definition would probably even be torture.

This is a retarded definition of torture and even you must secretly realize that.

I have no problems with including “psychological torture” as long as we can develop an objective standard for measuring it. In the absence of that, it is a totally subjective and meaningless term.

Physical torture as a phrase should be limited to the deliberate infliction of bodily harm, and that’s it. Electrical shock for example does damage you neurologically so it’s covered. Any means of generating enormous levels of pain similarly has long-term effects on the brain and would be covered.

If there is no objective evidence of lasting harm to the individual, I think calling it torture (at least in a legalistic sense) is meaningless.

*This is the last straw. If Barbara Walters doesn’t fire Rosie O’Donnell from “The View” over comments O’Donnell made on today’s episode, then she never will.

Today, O’Donnell said she feels bad for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM). She doesn’t believe he’s responsible for anything in 9/11 or any of the 26 plots which he volunteered to American authorities. Among the worst of her comments, O’Donnell derided airhead pseudo-conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck (who is ZERO match for O’Donnell on the intellectual scale) for calling KSM a “terrorist,” saying, “So, calling him a terrorist robs him of all of his humanity?”

  • Hannitized

By that definition, going to a scary movie is torture. Don’t you think being detailed against your will would create “extreme mental distress”?

Now you have entered the first phase of the argument which is to determine, correctly, that the word torture has been “tortured”, to say the least.

But I think to be intellectually honest in this debate would require that we agree to limit the definitions of torture to the meanings that fit the context. This would force us to narrow our focus to that of the definition of number 5.

Physical torture as a phrase should be limited to the deliberate infliction of bodily harm, and that’s it.

Agreed, however that is two words. There still needs to be definitions for the second word which is causing all the problems. The word tortured is used quite commonly these days an not only in the context of causing physical or mental distress.

For instance; Proof we have often tortured the meaning of the word “camp”, during the campaign season.

This is a retarded definition of torture and even you must secretly realize that.

Only to the extent where I might be in a situation where someone would threaten the life of my child or a family member in order to torture me mentally to get what they want.

If there is no objective evidence of lasting harm to the individual, I think calling it torture (at least in a legalistic sense) is meaningless.

Even certain types of physical torture do not cause lasting harm.

  • FlyOnTheWall

If Barbara Walters doesn’t fire Rosie O’Donnell from “The View” over comments O’Donnell made on today’s episode, then she never will.

  • carrick

    Lioncourt:

I’m glad to know who your moral standard is.

    Simple enough.

The long version of the Golden Rule is “Treat others as you would like [or expect] to be treated, IF you were behaving as they are.”

KSM is a vile human being who would torture you, not that sissy make you think you are drowning shit, real torture with a blow torch and pliers before he beheaded you on a video for propaganda purposes.

I don’t condone mistreatment of prisoners, not because I give a shit about the comfort of KSM, but to the extent that it harms our country’s interests.

If KSM had a bit of a tough time of it, so sorry for the little fuck. He deserves far worse that I’m sure he received.

  • http://ndgoon.blogspot.com/ goon

I am sick and tired of the left shedding tears for people that want to do our country harm. What are we supposed play nice with them and give them the opportunity to carry out their attacks?

  • carrick

Well yes I agree definition 5 is pretty close. But even this fails, in my opinion.

    5. the deliberate, systematic, or wanton infliction of physical or mental suffering by one or more persons in an attempt to force another person to yield information or to make a confession or for any other reason; “it required unnatural torturing to extract a confession”

If you put a person in prison, that person suffers as a consequence. Maybe not allowing them access to their religious texts could be torture by this definition. Clearly the simple act of inflicting “suffering” is not in itself sufficient to meet any meaningful threshold for “torture”.

I’m simply suggesting if we are to give the word real meaning it has to be quantifiable. Substantive harm to a person certainly would be such a measure (e.g. as opposed to breaking a finger nail.)

I’ve never been interned period, let alone in a foreign land where the guards share neither my language nor my culture. This is psychologically devastating to nearly anybody it happens too… yet most of us wouldn’t call it “torture” for a person to be lawfully held against his will.

I don’t think that waterboarding would normally cause any long-term physical harm, and no more psychological harm worse than the simple act of internment itself. So while it’s on my list of idiotic ways to gather intel information (for a number of reasons I’ve listed in the past) I just don’t see any reason, other than political, to try and describe it as torture.

    Rob says:

Making someone scared, making them feel like they might drown, is not torture. It may be uncomfortable. It may be terrifying. But it’s not torture.

    Princeton University defines torture as;

    torture

    noun
    1. extreme mental distress [syn: anguish]
    2. unbearable physical pain
    3. intense feelings of suffering; acute mental or physical pain; “an agony of doubt”; “the torments of the damned” [syn: agony]
    4. the act of distorting something so it seems to mean something it was not intended to mean [syn: distortion]
    5. the deliberate, systematic, or wanton infliction of physical or mental suffering by one or more persons in an attempt to force another person to yield information or to make a confession or for any other reason; “it required unnatural torturing to extract a confession”

    verb
    1. torment emotionally or mentally [syn: torment]
    2. subject to torture; “The sinners will be tormented in Hell, according to the Bible”

Please see my post at Ignoring the Trolls for instructions on installing and using the Greasemonkey user ignore script.

  • http://views-from-right.blogspot.com/ subbob

Would you please give the readership a block of instruction on how to enter this new information into Greasemonkey?

I uploaded the script and it is available here:

    http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/40350

From that page, you can click the Install button to add the script to GreaseMonkey.

Currently additional names must be added by manually editing the script.

    1. Right click the GreaseMonkey icon in lower right corner of Firefox window.

    2. Choose the option to manage scripts.

    3. Select the IgnoreDino script and click Edit.

    Edit this line:
    blocked_ids = new Array(‘http://sayanythingblog.com/profile/DINO','http://sayanythingblog.com/profile/skjelv‘);

    4. Add additional blocked IDs in the comma delimited list.

    5. Save your changes.

    6. Verify the IgnoreScript is enabled. (There’s a check button to enable/disable scripts)

Caveat: I’m writing the above steps from memory as I do not have Firefox & GreaseMonkey at work.

As per the script’s description at userscripts.org:

    Known limitation

The script uses the author’s profile tag for identification. Some commenters do not have a profile, so it will not work for them without modification.

Adding people to the ignore list requires manually editing the script source code.

    Future Improvements Desired

This was a quick hack job to get the problem solved. An improved version would include controls (perhaps an Ignore button inserted next to the user’s name in each comment) as well as an indication of removed posts, with an option to remove someone from the ignore list.

    Acknowledgements

Credit to gutalk_ignore, which I modified to make this script.

On March 10, 2007, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, an alleged Al Qaeda operative reported to be third in command under Osama Bin Laden, claimed responsibility, before his Combatant Status Review Tribunal, for the murder of Daniel Pearl. He claimed to have beheaded him, but did not specify whether he had cut his throat before cutting off his head (Zarqawi-fashion) or cut off his head from the back with a sword or axe, as decapitations were done for millennia and are still done in Saudi Arabia.[13] In a confession read during his Tribunal hearing Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is on record repeating:

” I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew Daniel Pearl, in the City of Karachi, Pakistan.[14] ”

This confession repeated, word for word, the phrasing leaked, in 2002, from his controversial interrogation in a clandestine CIA interrogation center.[

That and the video of it was proof enough that he’s a terrorist for me.

He sure looked like a terrorist when he was cutting off Daniel Pearl’s head, and enjoying it.
