Bush Stealing Ideas From George McGovern?

It would seem as though this tax rebate idea being floated by Bush administration was tried once before...by George McGovern.

Which doesn’t surprise me.  This tax rebate isn’t tax relief, it’s just a check from the government and any economic stimulus it provides is going to be short-lived.  After all, how much will difference will $800 make in your life during the course of a year?  Some, I’m sure, and that’s great.  But once that money is spent, it’s spent.

If we really want long-term economic stimulus we need to cut tax rates across the board.  Instead of giving people some money back let’s lighten the tax load they carry every year, year after year.

That would have a significant economic impact.  As significant as Bush’s tax cuts at the beginning of his administration were.

I really hope the President gets behind some real tax relief at the end of his administration lest tax policy serve as a metaphor for his entire term in office: In like a lion (tax cuts), out like a lamb (tax rebates).

In order to stimulate more investment you have to let people be able to plan that they’re investments will pay off over the long run.  The way to help that is to let him keep more of the fruits of his investment through lower tax rates.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

There’s a point that most people miss when talking about these “rebates”.  The Dems think the governmetn can afford the couple of billion it will cost to print and mail these “rebate” checks, but the Dems say we can’t afford more tax cuts.  Am I the only one to see the disconnect here?

Of course, the real answer is that any tax cut would go to the wrong people, you know, people who actually pay taxes.  Whereas, the “rebates” will go mostly to people whose tax liability is little or nothing.

They will also disappear into the underground economy.

kbiel,

Not at all!  Nor the fact that these are the very same Democrats who crowed incessantly last year that THEY were the party of fiscal responsibility, that they opposed budget deficits, and that henceforth all so-called “tax expenditures” MUST be paid for in the authorizing legislation (Pay-Go).

This is little more than an elaborate election year gimmick to buy votes and to make voters think that those in Washington are actually doing something worthwhile.  They aren’t.

These rebate checks will do nothing to actually stimulate the economy.  This is more of the same old, leftist Keynesian crap that has yet to prove its effectiveness… particularly in the initial phase of a deflationary economic cycle.  As economist Don Luskin succinctly stated,

I don’t know how you stimulate the economy by taking $800 from future taxpayers to give it to today’s non-taxpayers so they can buy more potato chips at Walmart.
