Bush Dodges Thrown Shoes In Iraq

Everyone’s a critic.

Dec. 14 (Bloomberg) — President George W. Bush ducked two shoes thrown at him by an unidentified man during a press conference in the Iraqi prime minister’s office.
Bush wasn’t hit by the shoes, one of which sailed over his head. The president shrugged and said “I’m OK” after the incident in Baghdad today. “All I can report is it is a size 10,” Bush said.
In Arab culture, throwing shoes is a grave show of disrespect. The man shouted an Arabic phrase, which an Iraqi present translated as “this is a farewell kiss, dog.”

President Bush laughed it off, but if this irate Iraqi had pulled the same sort of stunt with Saddam Hussein he’d probably have been introduced to an industrial plastic shredder. Feet first.
Perhaps this Iraqi should, in the midst of his hate for President Bush, take a moment to appreciate the ideal of free speech.
Update: Here’s the video. Not great quality, but you get the point. Update 2: Better quality video.

I happened to watch the coverage of the incident involving the aggression to President Bush on CNN.

I don’t know if anyone else watched it on CNN, but I was disgusted after listening to the event as told by Octavia Nasr. What a pathetic woman!

Ms. Nasr’s blatant disregard to objectivity in the reporting of the incident is a disgrace to journalism. There’s no doubt to the listener that if she could, she would have thrown the shoes herself at President Bush. SHAME ON HER & CNN!! It’s people like Ms. Nasr that give a bad name to objective journalism these days … With her enthusiastic account of the story … she was for sure cheering and justifying the actions of the thug with his size 10 shoes!!! Whatever happened to respect of the office? if not the man?

Then … although highly disappointed once again … I can’t say I’m surprised by the blatant political activism displayed by CNN reporters.

I wish you well :) Melek

“With the possible exception of things like box scores, race results, and stock market tabulations, there is no such thing as Objective Journalism. The phrase itself is a pompous contradiction in terms.” ~ Unknown

when an attack comes on President Obama, will outrage depend on one’s political persuasion?

    I could live with that.

  • pparets

Maybe I’m a tad out of touch with current political dogma, but in my book, when The President of the United States – no matter who it is – is physically attacked by any means, we are all attacked.

If it’s OK to throw shoes at President Bush because it is George Bush, then, when an attack comes on President Obama, will outrage depend on one’s political persuasion?

  • Rizwan Haider

I think Now Mr Obama will be welcomed in the same way

  • 2Hotel9

Yep, the first time anyone at a press conference so much as says a disparaging word to Barri all these leftards will be screeching for them to be thrown in jail.

  • Man Train

One has to admit that Bush is good a dodging (shoes, questions, facts, the draft, impeachment etc.).

  • Man Train

That last shoe hit him. Scratch shoes from the list.

  • Man Train

In my opinion this incident is a double edged sword.

On one hand, I gain sadistic enjoyment watching from some random guy throw his shoes at a world class idiot.

On the other hand, I find it unfortunate (and embarrassing) to have a President that the world thinks is worthy of having shoes thrown at him.

    36 days left!

  • Man Train

This comment thread shows that the class and tact Bush displays is rarely rejoined by his opponents/enemies.

Actually, what you view as “class” the world recognizes as Bush’s famous inability to acknowledge fault, his inability to recognize the concerns of others, and his lack of self reflection.

  • 2Hotel9

Why didn’t he pull that Glock and shoot the fucker in the face> Never back up from a terrorist. Innocent children and women will die as a result. Mark my words, this asshole will now go bomb a school or market to regain his “honor” before the eyes of the world.

  • pparets

Interesting cherry-pick, dino. Lord, you are truly immature.

Do you have an answer to the second part of my statement?

If it’s OK to throw shoes at President Bush because it is George Bush, then, when an attack comes on President Obama, will outrage depend on one’s political persuasion?

You can bet anything you want about my views on the Clinton Administration. I felt his domestic policies were basically good, his foreign relations efforts excellent, his understanding of the Islamic Jihad threat dangerously naive, and his personal conduct appalling. And, no, I did not aprove of the effort to impeach him for perjury.

No need for the entire shoe store.

You called me a liar, dino.

You have no right or basis to do so.

Thank you for voicing your objection. I agree that saying the whole world feels this way is a bit general. Let me rephrase:

What you view as “class” most of the world recognizes as Bush’s famous inability to acknowledge self fault, his inability to recognize the concerns of most others, and his lack of self reflection.

  • ellinas

The shoe throwing is a sign of disrespect. Nothing wrong with this guy dissing president Bush. He propably lost everything he had during the war.

    Greetings:

Makes me glad that we haven’t had time to teach them how to play baseball, the goofball might have actually hit what he was throwing at. I think the Iwaqi thrower was probably conflicted between wanting to deliver the cultural insult of his footwear (who knew they wore shoes?) and the fundamentals of madrassa aerodynamics.

And by the way, I don’t believe a word you said about your support for the Clinton admin.

It’s not ok to throw shoes at anyone. I just think he deserved the hostility he received. Sorry, but when you invade someone’s country, kill tens of thousands, drive the best and the brightest from the country and destroy the lives of generations of people, you deserve some hostility.

We lost 3000 people in one day nearly 6 years ago and we’re still whining about it like it was yesterday. I wonder how happy you’d be if we’d lost 10-20 times that many and had our lives uprooted for the entireity of those 6 years?

I do find it humorous how he went over there to try and claim his place in history as some great liberator. Poor guy will NEVER be anything more than an awful failure in any historical account even AFTER conservatives try and rewrite history.

President Bush is a hero simply for the way he has handled the hate and divisiveness from the left for the past eight years, all the while protecting us from your terrorist buddies, and doing his best to counteract your efforts to harm our economy.
