Bush, Congress Hit New Lows In Approval
But it’s worth noting that Bush is still 18 points ahead of the Democrat-controlled Congress.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush and the U.S. Congress registered record-low approval ratings in a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday, and a new monthly index measuring the mood of Americans dipped slightly on deepening worries about the economy.
Only 29 percent of Americans gave Bush a positive grade for his job performance, below his worst Zogby poll mark of 30 percent in March. A paltry 11 percent rated Congress positively, beating the previous low of 14 percent in July.
Take it for what it’s worth, I guess. The media/leftist line (because there isn’t really any difference) on this will be “Bush is unpopular because of Iraq, Congress is unpopular because they won’t stick it to Bush on Iraq.” But I think the truth is that Bush and Republicans in Congress are unpopular because of departures from certain conservative issues, illegal immigration being a big one. Spending being a lesser one. Democrats in Congress are getting low ratings because they didn’t win on the merits of their policies but rather because they were default choice instead of the Republicans.
I don’t think America wanted a liberal Congress. I think America was sending Republicans a message to get back on track.
