Burqa Chic?

Apparently some fashionistas thought it would be a good idea to feature the garment which is the symbol for oppression of women across the middle east at a Norwegian fashion show.

The Associated Press captions the series of photographs from the show thusly:

The burqa is the wardrobe of choice for many Muslim women. It is worn over a woman’s daily clothing, usually covering her from head to toe. Today, the burqa has gone designer, popping up on fashion runways in the West, like at this show by Norwegian designers Marked Moskva in Norway earlier this month. Here, a burqa evokes traditional Norwegian dress. The designers reportedly say they are aiming their collection at Muslims and non-Muslims. (Mattis Sanblad, Scanpix/AP Photo)

The wardrobe of choice for many Muslim women?

Yeah.  Right.  I’m sure there are a lot of women in the middle east choosing to wear head-to-feet garments even in the dead heat of the middle eastern summer.  It probably has nothing to do with the fact that these women are often beaten and/or killed for showings parts of their body from under the burka.

This fashion show is offensive.  The people responsible for it may as well have been trying to give the David’s stars Jews in Nazi Germany were forced to wear a “makeover.”

It’s actually a spoof.  Check out the Santa burqa and the lingerie burqa courtesy of links to aftenposten.no, courtesy of Mrs. Malkin.  I’m surprised they didn’t have a “three little pigs gettin’ drunk and smokin’ dope with Pilgrim after he retires” burqa.

Pilgrim’s Lady, my apologies if I’ve given your man any ideas.  :^)

This reminds me of a story from Al Franken.  He went over on a tour of Afghanistan with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.  He wanted them to all run out to meet the soldiers in Burqua’s.  They weren’t allowed to do it.

be kind and tolerant toward the differences of others.  eat no pork.  do not shake hands with pork grease.  do not bury the dearly departed with pork fat on your hands.  eschew the pig. Only a pork free nation will be truly inviting to those of other beliefs

Wait… do these come in child sizes for brides?

Bubba, the AP certainly didn’t seem to be treating it as a spoof.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

By tomorrow onwards, UN will officially give a valid reason.... its known as Positive Discrimination

The people responsible for it may as well have been trying to give the David’s stars Jews in Nazi Germany were forced to wear a “makeover”.

Whoa!  I see wrist!  The lack of sensitivity is offending me.  WE DON’T HAVE TO TAKE THIS!

All those dreary, uniform burquas… makes me wonder how that dusty-footed Islamic thug knows just whose wife he’s beating.

This doesn’t appear to be a joke.

We have designed the burqas to muslim and non-muslim women in Norway. We use burqas to wear at a regular basis ourselves. We see many advantages with wearing burqa and we want to promote it as a supplement to the ordinary female’s wardrobe.

Excuse me? This has to be a joke because it’s just too stupid to be anything else.
Pff.. I have some gunny sacks in the garage that can be worn too, but at least those would be multi-purpose.
WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?

The burgua certainly IS a joke!  But the medieval mysogeny and barbarity behind it is no laughing matter.

Is it really coincidence that the two most popular colors of burquas are black and blue?

Rob, you might be right here.  For reference;

And the original gallery:

Maybe I’m just a fan of morbid humor, but I find the gallery flat out hilarious--especially as these “artists” simply have no clue that first, most women don’t “choose” this attire, and second, wearing anything out of that gallery would bring the wrath of the Taliban on you.
