Bruce Springsteen: Americans Have “Justifiably Lost Faith” In The American Dream

And it’s all George W. Bush’s fault, apparently.  Here’s what Springsteen had to say between songs at an Obama rally in Pennsylvania:

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bruce Springsteen called the Bush presidency “a disaster” and said many Americans have “justifiably lost faith” in the American dream.

The legendary rocker interrupted a seven-song acoustic set at a voter-registration rally in Philadelphia on Saturday to praise Democrat Barack Obama and bemoan the crises facing the next president. Springsteen said that America remains a house of dreams for some, but that too many people have given up on the promise of fairness and equality.

“I’ve spent 35 years writing about America and its people and the meaning of the American promise — a promise handed down right here in this city,” said the New Jersey rocker, whose songs often depict down-on-their-luck, working-class dreamers. “Our everyday citizens ... have justifiably lost faith in its meaning.”

I think Obama, Springsteen and the rest of the liberal left have a pretty funny definition of what the “American Dream” is.  When this country was founded, it was about being left along.  About being free to support yourself and your family and generally live your life as you see fit with as little interference from the government as possible.  That’s what the ideals of freedom and independence were all about.

Now people like Springsteen and Obama don’t think we’re free unless the government is paying for our health care.  Unless hurricane victims have their entire homes re-built for them at taxpayer’s expense.  But is that really the American dream?  To be dependent on government for everything?

That may be what people like Obama and Springsteen want, but it’s a rather perverted view of the ideals this country was founded upon.

Americans haven’t lost faith in the meaning of the American dream.  A lot of them have been duped into thinking the American dream means taxing the hell out of our most productive citizens to buy goodies (entitlements, etc.) for everyone else.

That’s not how it was supposed to work.
