Bounce: McCain 54%, Obama 44%

Ouch:

WASHINGTON — The Republican National Convention has given John McCain and his party a significant boost, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken over the weekend shows, as running mate Sarah Palin helps close an “enthusiasm gap” that has dogged the GOP all year.

McCain leads Democrat Barack Obama by 50%-46% among registered voters, the Republican’s biggest advantage since January and a turnaround from the USA TODAY poll taken just before the convention opened in St. Paul. Then, he lagged by 7 percentage points. . . .

In the new poll, taken Friday through Sunday, McCain leads Obama by 54%-44% among those seen as most likely to vote. The survey of 1,022 adults, including 959 registered voters, has a margin of error of +/— 3 points for both samples.

It’s all thanks to Palin:

• Before the convention, Republicans by 47%-39% were less enthusiastic than usual about voting. Now, they are more enthusiastic by 60%-24%, a sweeping change that narrows a key Democratic advantage. Democrats report being more enthusiastic by 67%-19%.

• Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a national unknown before McCain chose her for the ticket 10 days ago, draws a strong reaction from voters on both sides. Now, 29% say she makes them more likely to vote for McCain, 21% less likely.

Obama’s choice of Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as running mate made 14% more likely to vote for the Democrat, 7% less likely.

Expect the attacks on Palin and McCain to really ramp up.  A 10 point lead over the liberal Messiah?

The left isn’t going to take that sitting down.

Comments

I believe there is a silent group of voters out there who have no intention to vote for Barry O. They just don’t want to be hassled by left leaning co workers so they keep quiet.

The press no longer has the influence they once took for granted. Both print and television news outlets are hurting these days. The middle class is allot more aware than Democrats understand.

Barry’s worst enemy is himself.

Not the time to start measuring the drapes in the Oval Office, but a very good sign!

I agee with Mickey,

The liberal power the Media used to yield is gone, or maybe anti-bush rhetoric just isn’t as effective as it used to be.

Ouch is right… but we know the Dems don’t pay attention to polls… smile and they love the 2nd amendment, too.

Doesn’t ‘bounce’ imply that it’ll come back down? Seems a little early to call it a bounce to me.

Maybe it’s just rising, like -

I am surprised the Lefties are not saying “oh it is a right leaning poll.”

This is getting really good.

Dirl126 has made an incredibly astute observation… the anti-Bush rhetoric is getting old and - with the success of the surge - a little dubious.

Here’s Obama’s problem.  The “4 more years of Bush” meme is getting a bit tired and we are still 60 days away from the election.

So what are they going to go with?  The “houses” thing doesn’t work anymore.  The “Bush” thing doesn’t work anymore.  What is left?

Also, why doesn’t the McCain camp talk about how Obama voted with the Left 96% of the time?

I cannot speak for the rest of small-town America but I can tell you that over the last week as I have traveled around the multiple small towns in my area, there is only one subject on the lips of the people that I have come across.

Sarah!

There are people talking to one another about it and the giddiness and excitement in their voices is unmistakable.

These are ordinary folks.  Not the type of people you would normally hear discussing politics out loud in public.

Saturday morning while having breakfast with my wife I heard no less than three groups of people in casual conversations (completely separate) saying that they could not wait until Nov.

One lady, a senior citizen, said that she was “disgusted”, “disappointed”, and “let down” by the Republican party until Sarah was named to the ticket.  She said that she felt that Sarah represents the first real hope for the Republican Party and our country since Reagan.  Prior to Sarah she was not planning on voting at all.

These were just casual conversations in several of the places that I have passed through over the last week or so.

There is a movement afoot.

Naming Sarah was a masterful move of strategy from the old warrior.

Obama, in his amateurish state, overcome by ego, made a critical error in failing to name Hillary.  That was a stumble that he is not likely to recover from.

Check mate.

Sarah (John Connor must live!) Palin made this election interesting.  I don’t trust polls, especially this early but 10 points is 10 points.  The right and middle are just so thrilled to have someone to vote for rather than against.

Hung, Obama couldn’t name Hillary for VP, that just could not work out well for him past election date.  Obamas choice of Biden was horrible in retrospect.  Obama needs someone of some force and charisma with him.

STOP!

Palin McCain did NOT get a 10 point bounce from the convention, lest you forget, they were DOWN 7 points (same poll) before the convention. That equals, let’s see now, fingers and toes, 17 points.

My friends, that’s not a bounce, that’s a breakout.

OK, before you write that the poll before that was only 3 up for Obama et al, then I’m wrong, It’ a 13 point breakout.

Very good news indeed.

So 50=54 and 46=44?

Nice lead, but I’m waiting for the electoral votes to shift accordingly.
