Boston To Begin Charging Admission

The Boston Globe - A city councilor is looking to turn Boston into a commuter toll zone so that people who drive into the city would have to pay to enter.

Saying the half-million commuters who drive into Boston each day are major contributors to traffic and parking congestion, Councilor Paul J. Scapicchio wants the city to look into requiring passes costing $1 to $5 daily and catching scofflaws by installing cameras to record license plates of cars crossing over from the suburbs without the passes. Today, he will ask for a council hearing to explore the idea.

Modeling his proposal on a similar program in London and an effort under consideration in San Francisco, Scapicchio said the fees would help fund public transit and road improvements in a city that has struggled in recent years.

''This program could remedy three problems: congestion, pollution, and the lack of revenue," said Scapicchio. ''This could discourage the use of our overburdened roadways and create a revenue source to fix our falling bridges and pothole-filled streets."

So not only would they charge an admission fee for commuters but they're also going to create some new bureaucracy to monitor the public use of Boston's roads.

And as for the problems this will supposedly solve? I have no doubt that it will solve the congestion and pollution problems as workers and businesses move to a place that doesn't charge them an admission fee, but an exodus of citizens and businesses isn't going to do much for the revenue problems.

One wonders if the idea of cutting spending to alleviate revenue problems has occurred to these politicians?

More Democrat stupidity.  Do they really think a commuter tax is going to make their city attractive to business?

Wait.  What am I thinking?  They don’t think that way.

Pittsburgh is also throwing around this idea. (another Democrat stronghold)

If you ever go to Korea, you have to cough up a few bucks to leave the country.  When I was there a few years ago, it was a few hundred Won to leave.  Free to get in, however.

What about UPS drivers?  Is UPS going to start charging more to deliver packages to Chicago?  And don’t expect to get Coke, Lay’s chips, or Hostess cupcakes cheap in downtown when they have to pay the city to service the stores…

Gee, why did they spend like 10 BILLION dollars on their new road if what they really wanted was to keep people OUT?  I thought the crappy old road was doing a perfectly good job of that!

Stupid liberals…

More like $14.6 billion.

I think this is a great idea! Of course, my hometown is across the border in NH where Mass business flee to for protection from the Mass tax goons. So, I might be a little biased in this…

Largely this is “tax the guy behind the tree.” Let the Burbs pay, the city needs the dough.
What I find objectional is that the Burbs have already paid. The roads they want to charge people to drive on were partially paid for with Federal and State moneys.
Amounts to circumscribing peoples right to travel and amounts to privatizing public roads.

You are correct WOOF, that is objectionable. Mass. is over-taxed (in all fairness: that’s a subjective, not an objective, evaluation). It’s the logical result reached through too much government bloat.
