BOO! Left Has New Bogeyman In Alito

The President Bush we all know and love is back.

Putting the Miers debacle behind him, he walked up to his conservative base, gave it a hug, and said, "Oops. Sorry guys." Then, he strode over to his enemies on the Left, who have been living it up at his expense through two hurricanes, the aforementioned botched SCOTUS nomination, and an overhyped indictment of an administration advisor no one had ever heard of before a couple of weeks ago.

He looked them in the face, then punched them right in the mouth.

Enter Alito.

The Left's bluff has been called, and make no mistake: it is on. Let the fun begin.

The Mortician is not amused:
"This is not one of the names I've suggested to the president," (Harry) Reid said yesterday of Alito on CNN's "Late Edition."

"In fact, I've done the opposite," he said. "I think it would create a lot of problems."
Yes, Senator. Problems for you. The next body you prepare for viewing may well be the riddled corpse of your party, as it finally learns that filibustering judges, particularly this one, is hazardous to its political health.

Over at Kos...

deacon:

Come on, Mr. President, nominate Alito.

Nominate Alito. Do it, I fucking dare you. You think it was bad getting eviscerated by your base about Meirs? Imagine fighting the inevitable Democrat filibuster with absolutely no public support.

Kos (my emphasis):
But it's already obvious that the nuts got exactly what they wanted -- a nut. Scalito is everything they hoped for and more.

But this is the best possible scenario for Democrats as well. We now have a vehicle upon which to showcase the differences between us and Republicans, between liberalism and conservatism. This is a golden opportunity, and one wisely denied by Bush and Rove with the Roberts and Miers nominations.

This is a gift to Democrats.

Hilarious. Notes to the Kossacks/Democrats:
  1. He took your dare. He's not afraid of you.
  2. Nothing is worse than getting "eviscerated" by your base. And nothing is better than re-energizing it in such a big way.
  3. Please filibuster. I double-dare you. Watching the final unraveling of the Democratic Party live on C-SPAN should prove to be great fun.
  4. If an energized Republican base and an eminently qualified conservative nominee constitute "the best possible scenario for Democrats," the state of that party is far worse than anyone could have imagined.
  5. There are already existing "vehicles upon which to showcase the differences between Democrats and Republicans, between liberalism and conservatism." They're called elections.

    You lose them.
Let's see, who's next...

Reuters? No, they're not biased:
U.S. President George W. Bush nominated conservative judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court on Monday in a move likely to set off a partisan battle with Democrats as he tries to right his struggling presidency.
Meanwhile, over at CBS News, White House correspondent John Roberts keeps it classy at today's press gaggle:
John Roberts: “So, Scott, you said that -- or the President said, repeatedly, that Harriet Miers was the best person for the job. So does that mean that Alito is sloppy seconds, or what?
I swear, whatever Scott McLellan makes to deal with these people, it isn't enough.

Chuck Schumer, as usual, made an ass out of himself. Here's his early press release.
It is sad that the President felt he had to pick a nominee likely to divide America instead of choosing a nominee in the mold of Sandra Day O’Connor, who would unify us. This controversial nominee, who would make the Court less diverse and far more conservative, will get very careful scrutiny from the Senate and from the American people.
I love how these guys are suddenly singing torch songs for Sandra Day O'Connor. It borders on outright farce. Later in the day, Chuck found a microphone and predictably ran his mouth before firmly inserting his foot in it....

Via Michelle Malkin:
Schumer...Will Alito use his seat like Rosa Parks did to change history for the better?...raises real questions about his commitment to civil rights, women's rights, workers' rights...blah blah blah...America needs unity now...the president seems to want to hunker down..soothing the ruffled feathers of the extreme right wing of his party...[Alito] would make the court less diverse...whines about need to fill the seat with someone in the mold of Sandra Day O'Connor...Judge Alito does not appear to be another Sandra Day O'Connor...
Rosa Parks? Are you kidding me? What a shameless, opportunistic hack Schumer is. Frankly, however, I'm less surprised at his comments than I am at the fact that he didn't deliver them while standing on Ms. Parks' casket as it lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda.

All that, and we're not even 24 hours into the confirmation process.

The Democrats, with their recent history of filibustering judicial nominees and their standing threat to filibuster anyone ideologically to the right of Fidel Castro, have all but begged President Bush to challenge them directly on a Supreme Court nomination.

Presto. Wish granted.

Now, the minority party is going to get an object lesson in what it truly means to be out of power. They asked for it.

Oh, and one last thing:

Scooter who?
