BOO! Left Has New Bogeyman In Alito

The President Bush we all know and love is back.

Putting the Miers debacle behind him, he walked up to his conservative base, gave it a hug, and said, "Oops. Sorry guys." Then, he strode over to his enemies on the Left, who have been living it up at his expense through two hurricanes, the aforementioned botched SCOTUS nomination, and an overhyped indictment of an administration advisor no one had ever heard of before a couple of weeks ago.

He looked them in the face, then punched them right in the mouth.

Enter Alito.

The Left's bluff has been called, and make no mistake: it is on. Let the fun begin.

The Mortician is not amused:
"This is not one of the names I've suggested to the president," (Harry) Reid said yesterday of Alito on CNN's "Late Edition."

"In fact, I've done the opposite," he said. "I think it would create a lot of problems."
Yes, Senator. Problems for you. The next body you prepare for viewing may well be the riddled corpse of your party, as it finally learns that filibustering judges, particularly this one, is hazardous to its political health.

Over at Kos...

deacon:

Come on, Mr. President, nominate Alito.

Nominate Alito. Do it, I fucking dare you. You think it was bad getting eviscerated by your base about Meirs? Imagine fighting the inevitable Democrat filibuster with absolutely no public support.

Kos (my emphasis):
But it's already obvious that the nuts got exactly what they wanted -- a nut. Scalito is everything they hoped for and more.

But this is the best possible scenario for Democrats as well. We now have a vehicle upon which to showcase the differences between us and Republicans, between liberalism and conservatism. This is a golden opportunity, and one wisely denied by Bush and Rove with the Roberts and Miers nominations.

This is a gift to Democrats.

Hilarious. Notes to the Kossacks/Democrats:
  1. He took your dare. He's not afraid of you.
  2. Nothing is worse than getting "eviscerated" by your base. And nothing is better than re-energizing it in such a big way.
  3. Please filibuster. I double-dare you. Watching the final unraveling of the Democratic Party live on C-SPAN should prove to be great fun.
  4. If an energized Republican base and an eminently qualified conservative nominee constitute "the best possible scenario for Democrats," the state of that party is far worse than anyone could have imagined.
  5. There are already existing "vehicles upon which to showcase the differences between Democrats and Republicans, between liberalism and conservatism." They're called elections.

    You lose them.
Let's see, who's next...

Reuters? No, they're not biased:
U.S. President George W. Bush nominated conservative judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court on Monday in a move likely to set off a partisan battle with Democrats as he tries to right his struggling presidency.
Meanwhile, over at CBS News, White House correspondent John Roberts keeps it classy at today's press gaggle:
John Roberts: “So, Scott, you said that -- or the President said, repeatedly, that Harriet Miers was the best person for the job. So does that mean that Alito is sloppy seconds, or what?
I swear, whatever Scott McLellan makes to deal with these people, it isn't enough.

Chuck Schumer, as usual, made an ass out of himself. Here's his early press release.
It is sad that the President felt he had to pick a nominee likely to divide America instead of choosing a nominee in the mold of Sandra Day O’Connor, who would unify us. This controversial nominee, who would make the Court less diverse and far more conservative, will get very careful scrutiny from the Senate and from the American people.
I love how these guys are suddenly singing torch songs for Sandra Day O'Connor. It borders on outright farce. Later in the day, Chuck found a microphone and predictably ran his mouth before firmly inserting his foot in it....

Via Michelle Malkin:
Schumer...Will Alito use his seat like Rosa Parks did to change history for the better?...raises real questions about his commitment to civil rights, women's rights, workers' rights...blah blah blah...America needs unity now...the president seems to want to hunker down..soothing the ruffled feathers of the extreme right wing of his party...[Alito] would make the court less diverse...whines about need to fill the seat with someone in the mold of Sandra Day O'Connor...Judge Alito does not appear to be another Sandra Day O'Connor...
Rosa Parks? Are you kidding me? What a shameless, opportunistic hack Schumer is. Frankly, however, I'm less surprised at his comments than I am at the fact that he didn't deliver them while standing on Ms. Parks' casket as it lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda.

All that, and we're not even 24 hours into the confirmation process.

The Democrats, with their recent history of filibustering judicial nominees and their standing threat to filibuster anyone ideologically to the right of Fidel Castro, have all but begged President Bush to challenge them directly on a Supreme Court nomination.

Presto. Wish granted.

Now, the minority party is going to get an object lesson in what it truly means to be out of power. They asked for it.

Oh, and one last thing:

Scooter who?

Ooh, I like lists!  Let me try!

1) He nominated Alito, knowing the guy will get stomped, because he had to pander to his base after the Miers fiasco.

2) Nothing is worse than getting eviscerated by your base.  And nothing is worse than losing another nominee, especially one your base likes, because he’s so fringe the Dems actually put up a fight to stop him.

3) Tom DeLay.  I called you on this before - the Republicans filibustered ALL THE TIME during the Clinton years.

4) You assume Alito is eminently qualified.  That remains to be seen.  If he turns out to be the kind of guy who argues racism is okay when determining who to hire, then filibuster the hell out of him.

5) Keep telling yourself that.  The Reagan revolution is almost over.  “Governmnet in a bathtub” people are seeing the fruits of their labor - Katrina, torture, endless wars, lacking public services, failing students, huge deficits, poor relations with foreign countries… get ready for a shake-up in 2006.

And a bonus 6) Scooter learned the name of Plame from Cheney.  Bush promised to fire anyone involved.  I’m waiting…

Okay, Rob… ready… set… spin!

That’s your entire comment? Hah.

Ryan G snorts out, And nothing is worse than losing another nominee, especially one your base likes, because he’s so fringe the Dems actually put up a fight to stop him.

The Democrats think that every Republican nominee is “fringe”.

If he turns out to be the kind of guy who argues racism is okay when determining who to hire, then filibuster the hell out of him.

Who do you think would filibuster him? The Democrats who support racist “affirmative” action policies? Are you joking?

Keep telling yourself that.

Keep telling ourselves what? That the Republicans keep on winning elections and the Democrats keep on losing them? It’s the truth.

The Reagan revolution is almost over. “Governmnet in a bathtub” people are seeing the fruits of their labor - Katrina...

The Katrina debacle was caused by Democrats, both local and state. Try again Ryan? Try to be honest next time.

...torture...

What torture?

...endless wars...

Explain?

...lacking public services...

What? You’re so vague.

...failing students...

Perhaps you should ask the NEA why they don’t want any kind of standard’s testing. It would be nice if you also asked them why they give campaign contributions almost exclusively to Democrats.

...huge deficits...

People on the socialist left care about deficits and debts all of a sudden? Please...no stupid jokes Ryan.

...poor relations with foreign countries...

Explain?

...get ready for a shake-up in 2006.

Blah blah blah. Hah. Good luck on that one buddy.

Okay, Rob… ready… set… spin!

Spin? You don’t even know what reality is, so therefore you can not recognize spin, much less call it out.

To Rob - excellent post bro.

The Dems are all talk and no substance. They have no agenda other than namecalling and smearing, and it becomes more and more obvious to the American public day by day.

Yeah, too bad we don’t have an alternative.

You do have an alternative; representing and supporting the founding principles of this country.  Too bad you don’t choose to do that. It seems you are right, though.  The Dems have no alternative to their namecalling and smearing, since they have no substantive program at all.

When the GOP does that, I’ll gladly join ranks.  But while it’s under the control of market fundamentalists who exploit the naivete of religious fundamentalists to push their agenda of narcissism and greed, I’ll stick with the (I) after my name.

History has already judged Marx, and has found him wanting in every way.  If your ideas are so good, why do you have to force them on people?

Alito is a notoriously radical judge who has attacked workers’ rights, womens’ rights and civil rights for years.

You seriously think that Alito will not be confirmed?  I mean, obviously it’s a possibility… But at this point, with what we know of Alito today, what in the world would lead you to believe that he would be voted down???

Specter is officially out with positive reviews of Alito, Graham and DeWine are officially out saying they will not allow a filibuster to stand, even Nelson is saying similar things.  Which members of the GOP are going to vote against him?  He’s obviously not going to be filibustered (see two sentences ago), so he’d have to have EVERY SINGLE Dem vote against him (which I’d officially predict he get at least 10), plus 5 members of the GOP.  Who’s gonna go against Bush now?  Come on…

MI~

This nomination sets up the battle that the right has wanted for some time (and the left appears to have wanted it too, but I suspect not nearly as badly) over this very question:

What are the founding principles of America?

Simply put, they are enumerated in the Constitution.  And the Supreme Court is tasked with protecting and guarding those rights.  A Justice Alito will uphold the rights that are expressed in the Constitution.  A Justice Souter will make up new rights, such as abortion, and erode rights he feels not necessary, such as property rights in Kelo.  The GOP stands up for the rights enumerated in the Constitution much more frequently than the Liberals do, because many of their ideals are simply not in there or are counter to what IS in there.  Rights to abortion, anti-2nd-Amendment legislation, “separation of church and state” etc.  These are all core ideals in the Democrat base that, simply put, run counter to the Constitution.  Whereas, the GOP holds the ideals of Life, religious expression, gun rights, etc.

This is one of the great reasons that the GOP wants this fight so badly.  These differences will be brought up intermittently over the next months until Alito is confirmed.  The more the Democrats oppose, the more these differences will be clear and that is why the fight will not be near as well fought from the left.

Dave:  Big govt conservative?  That is a verbal delusion.  Conservatives support the rights of the individual over the govt, as does the Constitution.  In case you don’t know it, the US is about individual independence, private property rights, free market economics and the like.  The Constitution is a document describing the limits of govt, not of individuals.  Read it.
