Blanco Signs Abortion Ban In Louisiana

Awesome...

Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Thursday that she'll sign a near-total ban on abortion -- without exceptions for rape or incest victims -- that is nearing final legislative passage.

The Louisiana House and Senate have approved the measure by Sen. Ben Nevers, D-Bogalusa, but it awaits one final approval from the Senate of House changes before it reaches Blanco's desk. It only would allow abortion in cases where the woman's life is in danger or when childbirth would permanently harm her health.

The bill could only go into effect if the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision is overturned.

"I anticipate signing that bill. It's got a safety measure for extreme situations for the life of the mother and some other health issues," Blanco said in an interview with The Associated Press.

She said she believed an exception for rape and incest victims to get an abortion, a proposal rejected by both the House and Senate, would have "been reasonable," but she said she wouldn't reject the bill for that reason.

"The Legislature has spoken," Blanco said.

The law was proposed by a Democrat legislator and signed into law by a Democrat governor. You wouldn't think those Dems. down there are maybe pandering to their constituency in an election year, would you? Sort of like Howard Dean pretending like the Democrats oppose gay marriage?

Well Blanco certainly needs to pander after her total failure as a leader during and after hurricane Katrina. Since then she's been consistently ranked at the bottom for approval among the various state governors.

It would seem as though this law, however, is not quite as ardent as the one South Dakota recently passed. This Louisiana law doesn't directly challenge Roe vs. Wade but is instead merely poised to take effect should that ruling be overturned. That's something of a cop-out, I think. It would have been nice to see Louisiana join in with South Dakota in challenging the ruling.

On a related note, I've always wondered why everyone thinks there should exceptions for rape and/or incest in any abortion ban. The reporter who wrote the above story certainly thinks there should be with the absolutely breathless "without exceptions for rape or incest victims!" in the opening line, but I think the inclusion of such things would be inconsistent with a pro-life stance.

Pro-lifers believe that when a woman becomes pregnant a person is conceived, one who merits legal protections (such as the "no shall any person...be deprived of live...without due process of law" part of the 5th amendment). I don't see why those legal protections should be null and void just because the mother was raped or had sex with a relative. Certainly those crimes have nothing to do with the child, so I don't see why the child should get a death sentence because of them.

So if your virgin girlfriend is kidnapped, beaten and gang raped by crack addicted AIDS infected escaped child molesters, one of whom is an uncle who was doing time for crimes against you, finds herself in a family way with the twins of these fellas, you’re going to be passing out cigars and wondering what color to paint the nursery?

Right.

RBB,
That’s the same comment you made 6 months ago.

Nice in reprise however.

I always liked Ms Blanco.

Please disregard any previous posts regarding her under my name.  They were all wrong. ;>)

Southern Democrats are a very conservative bunch as a whole.  They are Democrats because, well, that’s the way it’s always been.  We just held a primary here last week.  In the local races, there was not one single person running as a Republican.  The ballot was filled with Democrats, so that primary was actually the general election for those positions.  Many of the people elected are very conservative, but you don’t win local elections running as a Republican.

It’s the same at the state level.  Our legislature’s House is 72% Democrat and the Senate is 77% Democrat.  Virtually every single state-elected office is Democrat.  Our Congressional delegation is 5 Democrats and 1 Republican.  However, our Lieutenant Governor is a Republican, our Governor is a Republican and the state went to President Bush in both elections.

Now, I’m not saying that this isn’t a political move by Blanco to make it appear she believes one thing while actually not believing it.  I am skeptical because of the fact the law only takes effect if Roe is overturned.  She may be betting that it won’t happen and the law will never take effect.

I would be deeply grieved, and would hope that the criminals responsible could be caught and prosecuted.  But I wouldn’t take my grief out on the child by killing it.

RBB, you just describe the circumstances under which my best friend was born, minus the crack and aids part, and he’s one hell of a guy.

Should he not exist because of how he was created?

The “humane element” of the rape arguement cuts both ways.

I’m anti-abortion, but I also believe convicted rapists, especially those brutal ones, should have their testicles and penis removed.

Any problem with that?

nope

But then you probably knew that

And I would do it at 8PM live without anesthetic on ABC TV with John Stossel calling the play.

I suspect the series would lower the crime rate in that department.

Well, we agree on something, anyway.

I have something for you in that old thread below.  But then, you probably don’t care and wouldn’t respond and the site is acting up for me.

It keeps showing only the posts from May 31 back unless I refresh.

Rob, not to quibble with your language, oh hell, I will quibble.  So Incest in your mind is “had sex with a relative”?  How about inappropriate touching and sex between persons of unequal power. You make it sound like two cousins just fooling around.  I love how you “guys” love to make decisions for the woman who has to live with this. You weren’t raped, you weren’t molested, but hey woman just carry on bravely for another 9 months.  You’ll be glad you did.  Right!

with John Stossel calling the play.

At least the new eunuchs wouldn’t feel so emasculated if it was Stossel doing the play by play.

Hey Robert:  News flash.

Clinton hasn’t been President for what, around six years give or take?

Is there some attraction you feel that you haven’t been able to come to grips with?

docdave: The Ancient Egyptian Pharohs practiced brother-sister marriage.  I guess that makes it OK.  They didn’t abort their babies.

So if your virgin fiancé is kidnapped, beaten and raped by her crack addicted, AIDS infected, child molesting, Britney Spears loving, murdering escapee from prison father, finds herself in a family way with the seeds of his loin… you will be ready to sit back, crack a beer and call her mom Grammy?

I wonder what she would want.

realitybasedbob:

My wife was kidnapped off the street, and raped.  At the time we were trying to conceive our first child.

Luckily my wife escaped her two drug addled attackers.  It was big news in our region for a few weeks.  My wife turned up pregnant about 10 days after the rape.

All through her pregnancy the doctors wanted us to abort.  They wanted us to end the pregnancy because we couldn’t be sure who the father of the baby was.  Was it me, was it my wives attackers?

Frankly we - especially my wife - was overjoyed when she found she was pregnany.  First because rape can be a sterlizing physically damaging event.  She is a small lady and was roughly handled.  Second, because she felt it a silver lining.  She went through something horrible that will carry with her for all time.

Yet, last July, we were blessed.  With a healthy, beautiful, smiling baby girl.  People finally stopped asking us to get a paternity test.  The baby I call my daughter is obviously not my own flesh and blood.  We don’t care.  Not one bit.  She is a blessing - moreso than if she was mine naturally.

So, basically, yes, I was handing out cigars.  Yes, we did decorate the nursery.  And no, I don’t hate my daughter because she was created out of hate and not out love.  It drives me to love her more, to be a better dad.

So screw you.  If you and the doctors had your way my baby girl would have been sucked out into a plastic dish.

Well, the life that’s saved by avoiding abortion will probably be pretty glad.

I mean, talk about making decisions for persons of unequal power...what do you call killing an unborn child?

dp, I am sorry to read about what your wife went through.
I happy you and your wife could make a choice.
Do you think other women should have a choice?
Do you think another couple might reasonably make a different choice?
Do you think the government should be involved in your family’s personal private decisions?

Screw me?…a little tough there doncha think? If I had my way, it would have turned out just the same. You would have a daughter. It’s about choice, yours and your wife’s. Not Dobson and Falwell. Not the gop not the dems. You and your wife making a choice.

Good luck.

Weird how killing is now classified by some as a “family’s personal private decision”.

It’s about choice, yours and your wife’s.

Murder is always a “choice”.

forcing a woman to carry a child to term that she doesn’t want isn’t considered harming her mental health? it would harm mine. as far as i am concerned, women having abortions doesn’t affect anyone but the parents and the fetus involved. go ahead and think it’s murder if you want. continue to live your pious and self-righteous life. but i hope all of you are in line to adopt the thousands of unwanted children that will result from such a ban. i hope you are willing and ready to accept the consequences of teaching only abstinence to randy teenagers. and the next time you start wailing about the rights of fetuses, why dont you think about the rights of existing children, living in poverty, or the thousands upon thousands of mentally unstable homeless people, kicked out of state hospitals and left to fend for themselves(o, but they should just “get a job”, right?). but you guys aren’t interested in making this country a better place. the republicans(and dems, too) have failed miserably in every area, so they choose to attack gays and people having abortions. because, after all, the most persecuted people in this country are fetuses and christians. right? right?
what will result from this ban if it goes through, is a lot of dead women, as opposed to dead fetuses. people have had abortions since the beginning of medecine, and if you think they’ll quit doing it because it’s illegal, you better think again. again, tho, you guys really could care less about all that.

What do they put in the water in the US? You condemn the actions of 2 consenting adults ( Clinton and M) and cheer a lying, war criminal idiot like Bush. The US has the death penality, not a sign of a civilized society, and want to ban abortion. You will never stop women making the choice to abort an unwanted pregnancy. Women are strongly determined and will find a way. Each year 70,000 thousand poor women and young girls die from botched abortions in the third world . And that hypocrite Bush has refused to allow aid to go to anyone training docters to perform legal and safe abortions and provide family planning help. What sick, screwed selfserving bastards. The world will dance on Bush’s grave.

I am launching a boycott of Louisiana.  They, like South Dakota, are a welfare state, living on tourist income.  Liberals are wealthier than conservatives, who mostly have trouble finding the bathroom.

You pass a fascist anti-abortion law, I don’t visit.
