Billy Mays Dead at Fifty

Tampa police say Billy Mays, the television pitchman known for his boisterous hawking of products such as Orange Glo and OxiClean, has died. He was 50.
Authorities say Mays was pronounced dead this morning after being found by his wife at home. There were no signs of a break-in, and investigators do not suspect foul play. The coroner’s office expects to have an autopsy done by Monday afternoon.

A genuinely nice guy according to those who knew him. Another cultural icon bites the dust.

When phosphates are outlawed, only outlaws will use phosphates.
He was probably worried sick about the banning of all dish washing detergents that contain more than 0.5 % phosphates. It’s just a matter of time before the “Nanny State” bans all phosphates…OxyClean and Orange Glo wouldn’t make the cut.
Under the ban, dishwasher detergents can have no more than 0.5 percent phosphates, compared to conventional detergents, which have up to 9 percent phosphates. Similar bans have gone into effect or will take place in Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Virginia.

For manufacturer’s who put the go-ahead on Advertising by Irritation I make a mental note to never buy any one of their products. I would imagine others might feel the same way.

I can’t see how a pitch like that is good. Admittedly, I haven’t seen the numbers from focus groups who determine how effective it actually is in sales.

Laura Brown, spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said she did not know if Mays was wearing his seat belt on the flight because the FAA is not investigating his death.

As you said, TBD. But I’ve been on L1011′s in turbulence and watched the overheads suddenly pop open dumping carry on bags passengers. That was pre 9/11, hopefully screening is much netter today, because I always wondered about the consequences had a group of bowlers been on one of those flights!

I heard on the radio that he had just returned the evening before on a US Airways flight which had a hard landing. Some luggage fell on him and hit his head. Guess the autopsy will tell the tale. You just never know when your time is done.
