Betrayal: Is the NRSC Going to Work Against Toomey ?

NRSC Vice-Chairman Orrin Hatch said today that he doesn’t believe former Congressman Pat Toomey has a chance to beat newly turned Democrat Arlen Specter in next year’s Senate race in Pennsylvania. Hatch even suggested that the NRSC may seek to recruit a candidate to run against Toomey.
“I don’t think there is anybody in the world who believes he can get elected senator there,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch, the vice chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
Asked if the NRSC would back Toomey, Hatch said, “I don’t think so” and that the party should look for “someone who can win there.”
The Chairman of the NRSC, Texas Senator John Cornyn, has yet to endorse Toomey and said today that he wasn’t sure that Toomey would be the “only candidate” or the “strongest candidate” either. In fact, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham suggested a name today that has been thrown around in political circles since Specter’s defection – Tom Ridge.
Ridge is the only Republican who makes Specter appear conservative. He is pro-abortion, anti-school choice, and pro-tax. He was also not exactly stellar as Secretary of Homeland Security, though the present Secretary there makes him look sharp in contrast.

The beltway Republicans just don’t get it. Specter was bad for the Republican party. True it’s not at all convenient to lose him at the moment, but if we want to rebuild the party we have to come up with some Republican principles that mean something. That isn’t going to happen while we have clown’s like Specter, McCain or Grahamnesty in the Senate representing us.
All they do is throw the elections to the Democrats like happened last November.
The thing for the national party to do right now is to butt out. They’ve already got one candidate who’s well known for this point of the campaign. (Well enough known to have forced Specter to avoid a primary fight.) If another candidate shows up whether its Ridge or not sobeit. That’s what primaries are for.
The thing not to do is to push a Ridge through the party process. That will probably ensure the Republican party in Pennsylvania stays out of office for a generation.
This is what the beltway Republicans did 5 years ago to get Specter past Toomey in the primaries then. How’d that work out?

you can certainly subscribe to the opinion you are espousing. However, you will be doomed to be a regional/southern party. The independents have no reason to join a party that for a decade acted in a manner that was contrary to was they were saying.

Even recent republican polling data shows the party is in deep trouble on traditional republican issues like security and taxes.

The republican party has become the party of NO and the party of litmus tests. Not good for any hope of reclaiming what they once were.

Probably. They were the same idiots who refused to support him last time.

My problem is they threw their support to Specter the last time in a big way.

There’s no bottom to the pit you are digging.

WOOF: “Half blood” was my contribution. It’s a cultural reference to the J K Rowling books. You may have heard of them?

Speaking of cultural references, you may want to update your “look” to something newer than the sixties. Maybe something like this?

LOL @sigfan for considering a popular two-term Republican governor like Tom Ridge as someone who “loses” elections.

  • DPM

Oh-ho! Apparently, stabbing a sitting Senator who’s been a Republican for fifty years is just fine, but if you dare to challenge some ideologue whose efforts have won more seats in Congress for the Democrats than James Carville – oh, no, that’s just unthinkable.

Apparently some haven’t been paying attention on how well Republicans do in elections when they govern as liberal Republicans.

The local trolls are just trying to give us “advise” they know will help them in the long run. If they get another Specter they win because he will vote with them, if the “liberal” Specter like candidate loses then they get a true Democrat. I am loathe to take advice from a troll because I know they have the best interest of the Republican Party at heart! Ha! As to the Republican Party, I don’t know what has gotten into them. No that’s wrong, most politicians are spineless and will do whatever they think will keep them in power. They saw election results and took the wrong lesson. They thought if we’ll only soften our stance we can win. Wrong, you lost because you became Democrats and most people would rather vote for the real thing and not some pale imitation. To our local trolls, laugh it up, you guy’s won and deserve to yuck it up a little. I’ll give you some advice, “Great kid! Don’t get cocky!” You are implementing a lot of changes. I hope they work out. I don’t think they will and you are setting yourselves up for all of the blame. When your Speaker of the House say’s stunning things like we can now pass things without having to explain things, you should be alarmed.

The multicolored animal borders on abuse.

How is that? Boulder Colorado has an ordinance that makes it a crime to color your poodle. Sounds pretty dumb to me, both the coloring of the aniimal, and the outlawing of said color.
Poodles have no self esteem issues, no humility, no dignity, and why would it be ok to give it the stupid looking haircuts they so often have, yet be abusive to color it?
    Just curious.

My thoughts exactly – they want to ensure a loss by disengaging the base again, by all means, run a “liberal” like Ridge.

  • SigFan

    DPM –

Ridge may be popular with liberal/moderate Republicans – with conservatives, not so much. He would not be able to beat a Democrat, even Specter, in present-day PA simply because the conservative base of the Republican party would not support him. He would suffer the same fate as McCain. Unfortunate but true. I do enough work with the Republican party here in PA to tell you that the mood is not favorable to another moderate.

There’s no bottom to the pit you are digging.

They are experimenting by shedding those politicians who still enjoy some popular support. Apparently the ‘democracy’, ‘voting’, ‘public opinion’ shit actually means something. Some can reteach meaning to the GOP, then try to help them figure out what’s going on. Or should I say going down.

Hard to pay attention as there are so few.

They have all been on the culture wars bent. Its going very poorly for them.

Warm up to debauchery and small govt, why not?
