Bernanke “Calm Before the Storm”

The Washington Post:

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke warned Congress yesterday of a “fiscal crisis” if it doesn’t curb the projected growth of federal spending on retirement and health-care programs.

Echoing similar warnings by his predecessor, Alan Greenspan, Bernanke told the Senate Budget Committee that “the effects on the U.S. economy would be severe” if the government’s debt were allowed to balloon as forecast.

Bernanke noted that the federal deficit has declined in the past two years but said that was “the calm before the storm” of skyrocketing expenses for an aging population. He cited Congressional Budget Office projections that spending on the big entitlement programs—Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid—will equal 15 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product by 2030, double last year’s level.

He also decried “burdensome” tax rules and said Congress might raise tax receipts by making them simpler.

Our entitlement program growth is unsustainable.  We can either fix the problem now with a moderate amount of pain or follow the Democrats in Congress and let this problem assume crisis proportions.  The solution to the problem isn’t more government tax and spending.  The solution to the problem is expecting those that are able to take care of themselves to do so.

The bridge is out, instead of hitting the brake the Dems/Socialists are leaning on the throttle and heaving more fuel into the firebox.

2H9,

Surely you can’t be surprised.  This has to do with numbers, with concepts such as net present value of future, unfunded liabilities.  The fact that it was Democrats who put us into this fiscal position with their fiscal irresponsibility in no way obligates them to understand the financial and economic havoc that Dr. Bernanke is talking about.  They are like the infant who shits in his diapers, and then wonders what smells so bad.

Not surprised at all. I have the lawnchair and cooler of beer next to the grill, and am going to watch this trainwreck with unrestrained morbid fascination.

I accepted long ago that I would receive nothing from SS. And they get very little from us.

It is insane to think any politician will dare touch these entitlement programs until a true crisis exists. (1) Bush got his butt handed to him by both political parties for even suggesting we should solve Medicare and Social Security problems now before it gets worse. (2) Unless it is a crisis, where is the glory and credit for the politician and/or party that appears to solve it? (3) Until it becomes a major crisis it will be impossible to get the average American to make any sacrifices.

No, I am sorry friends, it takes real courage to talk about this issue and courage and politics are alien to one another.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke tells The Truth.  I wonder who will listen, who will have the courage to do something about it honestly and who will continue to dream that it will “just go away”.

I don’t think the nights that said Ni said run away.  That was King Arthurs Ka-Nig-Its that said that.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

There are democrats that would love to create such a fiscal crisis in hopes of decrying the failure of capitalism and swooping in with full-blown socialism as the solution.  This is no accident.

HG: Most of the average Democrats (voters) are unaware the party they support is striving, step by step to build a socialist utopia in the United States.

1. Iraq, Environmentalism, our pending fiscal crisis, the secularization of America and a host of other issues are being used to create the right environment wherein these socialist minded people can institute their dream on a national scale, National Health Care the next few years will be a great help if they get it passed into law.
2. To the above you can add something they borrowed from Lenin. The latter said it is necessary to create a hated leader and be able to point to a great political/economic crisis for socialism to be accepted and embraced by the masses. Our dear Democrat Party comrades have demonized Bush (A hated political leader) and they have methodically created a political/economic crisis: Economic the pending retirement implosion. Political: The Iraq War.

Well now that I have cheered you up, I’ll only say that if the left wong agenda succeeds, it will be because the conservatives have not defended the truth successfully.

The basis of our economy is productivity, and we have no worries in that respect.

Thanks for the “mention”, but whatever it is that you hope to imply by parroting my words is known only to you.  Let’s keep it that way, OK?
