Berkeley City Council Backs Down From Booting Recruiters But Refuses To Apologize

The folks on the council actually had the temerity to say that they support the military.  They just oppose military recruiting.

Some on the council had pushed for issuing an apology. But others rejected that, saying they just wanted to clarify their position.

Councilwoman Linda Maio said the council opposes recruitment, not the military. “It’s behavior that we oppose, not the people,” she said.

The meeting drew hundreds of people on both sides of the issue who rallied from dawn until well into the night outside City Hall.

Inside the chamber, scores of speakers addressed the council.

Some decried the council’s earlier action.

“You owe our military an apology,” said Kevin Graves, a San Francisco Bay area resident who said his son died serving in Iraq.

But others applauded the council’s stand.

How can you be for the military, but against the military asking people to join ranks?

Good question, Rob!  Here’s another one:

How can anyone with average or better intelligence believe this drivel for a moment?

If you don’t know by now, don’t mess with it.

The same way you can be against an evil imperialistic war that’s killing innocent civilians led by BusHitler, but support the nazis...erm troops.

Rob, I don’t know if the city council video has been posted here or if you’ve seen it but it infuriates me to no end. The mayor, a so called EX marine not a former marine, was “dropped” from the corp and displayed nothing but animosity towards the Marine Corp. To me he is a disgrace to mankind. Another council member claimed her and other families, “found psychiatrists who would say her kids were nuts so they wouldn’t get drafted for Vietnam..” EXCUSE ME!!! Is that even legal?
Just talking about the Berzerkely Bozos irritates me to insane anger.
Aaarrgghh!!!!!

"Marine Corps,” Anna--just don’t pronounce that last letter, or a leatherneck might politely (or otherwise) help you with your pronunciation.  :^) Otherwise, well said.

I remember visiting there a while back.  Lots of stoned folks out on the streets when I went for a run one Sunday morning, and yes, the roads need work too.  You could find pure heroin more easily than a parking space, if that was what you desired.

Yes, there ought to be some higher priorities on their docket.

Berkeley: I suggest that Congress reaffirm that they like the good folks in that strange little town, but will not send them any federal money.

There’s something about the Marines that really sends the Leftist minds high and to the right.  Remember the Sara Lister affair?

Maybe, it’s because they know that Marines have sent so many Commies to their Workers’ Paradise (e.g. Hell) :

God has a hard-on for Marines, because we kill everything we see. He plays His games, we play ours. To show our appreciation for so much power, we keep heaven packed with fresh souls. God was here before the Marine Corps, so you can give your heart to Jesus, but your ass belongs to the Corps!!

Move_Zig: HaHa! Great post!  And, the Marines represent courage, dedication, valor, patriotism, determination… words they probably don’t understand in Berjeley.

Kenny.  Shame on you.  We elect our leaders.  Our congress authorized this use of force.  We are stationed over 75 different places around the world in harms way. Which other place you you disapprove of?

Well, Chief,

I assume you haven’t read any other of my responses here. So I’ll ignore the initial outrage. I’m actually a supporter of the Iraq war. That said, back to the issue at hand (and your anger)....

The question was: “How could someone oppose recruitment, but be ok with the military?”

The answer: “The same way they can be opposed to an evil war where we are ruthlessly murdering thousands of innocent Iraqis for fun (or oil), signed off on by BusHitler, but be for the troops (who would be nazis if Bush is Hitler).”

Some examples:
http://www.opednews.com/articles/2/opedne_sheila_s_060612_support_the_troops.htm

One of the more frightening things about wars, especially immoral wars like this one, is the enemy must be dehumanized so soldiers and marines can be kept under control and “up” for the killing they must do. Normal human beings can’t turn cruelty on and off like a faucet; therefore, the troops must be also be dehumanized to the point of madness. They become predators without conscience—drugged and brainwashed into a continuous white rage, not only willing, but eager to kill.

Their commander-in-chief is a ruthlessly self-centered, single-layered demon whose hypnotic cadence of kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill has succeeded in turning them into the monsters they must be for his world dominance aspirations to succeed. The US military are victims of a cruel fascist regime. They are used, then tossed aside to come to terms with what they have become on their own. It is a rare soldier who returns to find professional help available.

Or hell how bout this:

I, and just about anyone and everyone who criticizes George Bush and this war are accused of “not supporting the troops.” Since my son, Casey, was killed in Iraq because of lies and to actually make that country safe for our corporate interests, I have been saying the only way we can support our troops at this point is to get them the hell out of this illegal and immoral war.

The massacre in Haditha on November, 19, 2005, is just another way to underscore the fact that our troops are being turned into war criminals in what one article called: “The Worst War Crime of the Iraq War.”

Now, perhaps I should’ve added quote marks, but my assessment is right on. One can apparently believe that our commander in chief is a monster who loves the blood of children, but that the soldiers, who would actually participate in said slaughter, are innocent victims. The same way that one can “support the troops” but believe that recruitment or any use of the military is evil.

The instances of someone turning themselves into a rhetorical pretzel to simultaneously claim that the war is evil, but our soldiers (who volunteered to fight) are angels....are legion. The attempt to have it both ways is amazing. If the war is evil, immoral, illegal, (insert favorite evil words here), then our troops must be as well. But heaven forbid the anti-war types open themselves up to criticism, so instead they also claim to love our troops.
