Berg Hits Heitkamp With Her Own Words On Obamacare
11:34am
With polls showing a neck-and-neck race, and with Heitkamp working hard to revise the history of her positions on Obamacare, the Rick Berg campaign has released an ad called “In Her Own Words” concluding that “North Dakotan families can’t trust Heidi Heitkamp.”

Talking with Republican friends, there is a consensus that Berg hasn’t “gotten into the game” yet against Heitkamp, and certainly that seems true. So far the most visible candidate in North Dakota’s Senate race has been Heitkamp, and there is some frustration among Republicans that she’s being allowed to define her campaign and the race on her terms with little push back from Berg.
Let’s hope this ad represents Berg finally pushing back.
As for the ad itself, if I had to critique it I’d say that it should have contrasted Heitkamp’s past statements about Obamacare with some of the whoppers she’s saying now. It’s not news that Heitkamp was vocal in her support of Obamacare in the past. What’s news is that Heitkamp wants to claim, now that she’s on the ballot, skepticism of the law up to and including being opposed to the most controversial aspect (the individual mandate).
Clearly, that’s not true. Before she was a candidate Heitkamp’s support for Obamacare was fulsome and without reservations. Heitkamp only formed doubts when it became politically convenient to have doubts.
Berg’s ad should have done a better job of pointing that out.
