Barack’s Housing Problem

Barack Obama, thinking he has a winner with class envy, has released an ad about John McCain’s houses. The faux outrage generators are cranking full steam, that Obama is “Shocked! Shocked!” that McCain and his heiress wife might own more real estate than the average American. But, it may be that half of all McCain’s houses combined may be worth one John Edwards McMansion!, and certainly less than the combined real estate holdings of John F. and Theresa Heinz Kerry!

WASHINGTON – From a sailing mecca to a ski resort, presumptive Democrat nominee John Kerry and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, enjoy the trappings of their wealth in at least five homes and vacation getaways across the country valued at nearly $33 million.
Some are private escapes for the family, and others serve as prime spots to host fund-raisers and exclusive gatherings for wealthy donors. All reflect the couple’s status – he is a four-term U.S. senator; she is heiress to the $500 million family ketchup fortune – with breathtaking vistas, elegant furnishings and enclosures that protect the property from prying eyes.

At least five??? What’s the matter, John? Don’t you know???
Where was all this class envy from the Dems when John Kerry was their nominee?
Plus, as to houses, Mark Hemingway points out:

Obama bought his with help from someone who was just found guilty of six counts of wire fraud, six counts of mail fraud, two counts of corrupt solicitation, and two counts of money laundering.

Of course, if I had Obama’s thin resume, carefully hidden track record and inability to speak without a teleprompter, I’d do anything to cast attention away from myself, too!

    Hey Hannitized….

Overall, McCain is right about the economy..
Sure, there’s some problems. There always are..
There haven’t been enough bad Quarters strung together to officially declare a “Recession”, like I know you want in this election year. You being a Dummy, er, I mean a Democrat..that is.

    However, with your comments like;
………”You see, that is a problem for McCain, because he argues that the economy is GOOD.
Of course none of the SAB crew “got it”, because they think this argument makes sense. And I suppose it does in an non-sensical, hide from reality, dumb-assed sort of way.”
You seem to be the Biggest “DumbAss” here..

  • Hannitized

Given the serious nature of this debate,I suggest we all meet for coffee at the Obama’s 1.6 mil Chicago manse and thrash things out.

Biting commentary PP. it’s almost as if you made a point.

Why are Republicans so dishonest to admit that this isn’t about having one large house, and that it is actually about having so many that you actually forget how many you have?

I guess it must have something to do with that honesty, character trait, they pretend to care so much about.

Thanks for demonstrating that you can obfuscate with the best of them PP.

None of the properties are in John McCain’s name however. All are owned by Cindy, or by family trusts set up by her father.

If that story is true, that makes it even worse for Old John.
    He should have answered none.
    Zero.
    John doesn’t own any houses.

If he knew that, he should have said so.

So the real headline is McCain doesn’t know he doesn’t own any houses.

Anyone wanna talk about the good.bad goddamnamerica Rev.J.Wright’s house/mansion in Tinley Park?

this house thing can get real juicy

  • WhatTha?

Instead of obsessing on how many houses McCain owns, Barry-O might want to concern himself with fidning a house for his brother in Kenya, who lives in a 6 x 9 shed on $1 a year. Something tells me he & the Mrs. could scrape together a few bucks towards the effort.

Wouldn’t it be nice if some enterprising reporter brought a picture of Barry’s palatial Chicago abode over to Kenya, showed it to brother George Hussein Obama, and asked for his opinion? (yeah, like that’d happen)

A condo qualifies as a mansion now? Are you perhaps a neighbor of Obama’s half-brother now, RCB?

Boy, I guess Obama’s going to have a talk with numerous millionaires on the left side of the aisle. Lessee….Kennedy, Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein, and a host of others are multimillionaires, if I remember correctly.

RBB is exactly right. Votes for names of post offices should always take precedence over other less important work, like world hunger or Russian military ambitions.

The New Democratic Party: We are even shallower and stupider than ever. Change you can believe in.

  • Hannitized

The attack in and of itself “He has 8 houses! He must not be President!” seems really stupid.

For once I agree with you Kenny. Only, you got it wrong again. The attack isn’t that he has 8 houses. Its that he has so many, that he doesn’t even know how many he has.

And if he is so wealthy that he can’t even remember how many houses he has, well….just how out of touch is he with average Americans who can barely afford their one house?

He dug himself in deep with that one. Your average American won’t forget that.

  • Hannitized

    Hey Poofy,

Why are you calling McCain’s wife an heiress? You told me she works hard to earn her money.

FYI, that is not what Heiress’s do.

  • Bat One

    John Hinderaker:

The truth is that McCain isn’t out of touch with “ordinary people” because he’s rich, he’s out of touch with his own domestic arrangements because he cares little about material things, and for many years has devoted his extraordinary energies not to enjoying his wife’s money, but to serving the American people. Given the number of nights he’s spent in hotels or on military bases over the last few years, it’s no wonder he hasn’t seen much of his wife’s condos.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/realitybasedbob/ realitybasedbob

Goon, you should really have a chat with the 108 about cherry picking.

    He is good at it.

    You…not so much.

On Monday, Obama’s campaign gave Bloomberg news service e-mails from the sellers, who reportedly said Obama’s $1.65 million bid “was the best offer” and that they didn’t cut their asking price because Rezko bought the adjacent yard.

    Oh, the next paragraph reads:

The campaign said Obama and his wife started at $1.3 million and upped their offer twice over 10 days. According to the campaign, the sellers confirmed they “did not offer or give the Obamas a ‘discount’ on the house price on the basis of or in relation to the price offered and accepted on the lot.”

Darn that Susan Collins person anyway!

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/realitybasedbob/ realitybasedbob

Yes, Mahatma McCain is a real man of the people.

Is that why he has missed more votes than any other senator?

Not to mention the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port and all of their other international “get-aways.”

  • carrick

And usually, those people who manage property are called property managers.

Actually property managers are the guys who make sure the rent is paid and the repairs are done on time.

For somebody like McCain or Obama, real estate investments would probably be managed through a trust fund. So that guy would be called the “trust fund manager”.

  • carrick

Doesn’t sound like a leader to me.

    More goofy baiting.

For US Senators, there are ethical and legal issues that have to be taken care of. If McCain owned the business of any sort, and actions that he took as a Senator could favorable influence that business, then he is required to place his portion of the business under the guidance of an independent trust fund.

A good leader in any case is someone who delegates wisely. The last really shitty president with Jimmy Carter—Mr. Triple Double: simultaneous 10%+ prime rate, inflation rate and unemployment rate. Part of this no doubt was due to his bankrupt ideas on economics, but part was due to his micromanagement style.

If you’re trying to tell me that Obama, unlike McCain, is a micromanager, I personally won’t vote for him.

  • carrick

I’m guessing he owns more than seven houses, if you include the homes (really condos) that he owns as an investment. He tried to make that clear when explaining why he was uncertain.

    Woop-ti-do.

  • carrick

Why are Republicans so dishonest to admit that this isn’t about having one
large house, and that it is actually about having so many that you actually
    forget how many you have?

I have a friend who doesn’t know exactly what properties he owns. He invests in real estate, and somebody else manages the account….

    Probably a similar story here.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/ likwidshoe

  • http://insanereindeer.blogspot.com/ Kenny

That is an interesting point Poofy. The only problem with your brilliant argument is of course that both John Kerry and John Edwards both argued in favor of the economy being BAD for averaged income Americans.
You see, that is a problem for McCain, because he argues that the economy is GOOD.

To be honest, I don’t get why the pronouncement on the economy is relevant to the housing, or why the housing is relevant to the view of the economy.

The attack in and of itself “He has 8 houses! He must not be President!” seems really stupid.

  • sayanything-2407

Regardless, personal wealth or property is not a pre-requisite to being president.

At least not in the present day.

Houses vs houses is not going to make a damn bit of difference in the voting, so the ad is not really that big of a deal.

All it try to do is bring up class warfare, see what he has, he has MORE than you do!!

I think for the majority of Americans we have moved beyond that idiocy of being played like that. We understand rich people tend to be rich and have more than people who are not so rich.

I work hard for what I have, I support 4 people (including myself), and I do not begrudge someone who has more than I do.

Well, perhaps the 80 year old driving a corvette, what the hell is up with THAT?!?

  • sayanything-2407

I ask again, why is it so vital to the dems to create this “Abraham Lincoln” myth about Obama?

So he appeals to more moderate to cetral republicans and the working class.

From my understanding and feel free to correct me if i am wrong, the democrats think the only way a minority can make it is through handouts and governemnt help, the democrat way.

While conservatives (I would say republicans but this isnt mostly true with republicans) believe that minorities have the ability to make it without governemnt intervention, that they can be success by themselves and not through government handouts.

Obama: I toured home with Rezko
By David Jackson and Bob Secter | Tribune reporters
    2:44 AM CST, February 19, 2008
Before he bought his South Side mansion in 2005, Sen. Barack Obama took his friend and fundraiser Antoin “Tony” Rezko on a tour of the premises to make sure it was a good deal, Obama’s campaign revealed Monday.

Weeks after saying he’d answered all questions about his controversial dealings with the now-indicted Rezko, Obama released new details about their purchase of adjacent lots from the same seller on the same day. But the disclosures by Obama’s presidential campaign left unanswered questions and raised new ones.

Obama was able to buy the house for $300,000 less than the listed price while Rezko, in his wife’s name, paid the full $625,000 asking price for an undeveloped side lot.

On Monday, Obama’s campaign gave Bloomberg news service e-mails from the sellers, who reportedly said Obama’s $1.65 million bid “was the best offer” and that they didn’t cut their asking price because Rezko bought the adjacent yard.

Thank you for your response, albeit far from an argument.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion on the economy and it’s heath status. I will not try and dissuade you from your point of view, as you are entitled to have it.

In regards to this topic (you know, the ad), I would say that for people like me, who believe we do not have a strong economy and are in a very delicate state of affairs, the ad is effective. For those like you, the ad will not be. Therefore, the argument that Edward and John Kerry have multiple houses is not only irrelevant, but it sort of stupid, considering the point of the post.

    There you have it.

And by the way, nobody was arguing that we are in a recession.

We like it that Americans are wealthy, we want Americans to acquire wealth. We just don’t want people who are so well off that they can not relate to those who aren’t running the country. Or those who are so old and forgetful that they don’t know how many houses the own.

Spoken like someone who has trouble with the concept of big numbers. Like “8″.

This is pretty lame even for you, Hannitized!

    Hannitized:

We just don’t want people who are so well off that they can not relate to those who aren’t running the country.

Not true at all… I was up long before that…

OK – McCain should announce today (right around the time of Barry-O’s VP pick) that he’s buying one more house…in Kenya, to let George Hussein Obama live in! What could the Chosen One say then?

WhatTha? on August 22, 2008 at 09:56 am

He would say thank you very much.
Are you that dumb that you don’t know what people say when they receive a gift? Even if it is for their half brother?

For once I agree with you Kenny. Only, you got it wrong again. The attack isn’t that he has 8 houses. Its that he has so many, that he doesn’t even know how many he has.

Actually, I was going off the ad. On the ad, the attack is nothing but “He has five houses. Don’t elect him.” McCain sounded dumb on the sound bite…Obama sounded mentally retarded. The problem is…Obama chose both sound bites. DOH.

And if he is so wealthy that he can’t even remember how many houses he has, well….just how out of touch is he with average Americans who can barely afford their one house?

At one time my family owned three houses. We rented one, lived in one, and my grandparents lived in the other (they paid all the bills but it was in our name). A LOT of people own more than one house. Or they buy a duplex and rent a side out. It’s not that uncommon. Real estate is a pretty common form of investment. I’m low middle class, and most people I know who own a house rent to someone. In St. Louis, about 90% of dual spaced housing are owned by one half of the tenets and rented to the other.

Regardless, since all the property is his wife’s and the broker reports to her, not him, this seems moot. I’m sure the McCains have gone beyond talking about “my” and “your” property, and now just talk in joint terms. Doesn’t mean he keeps up on it.

He dug himself in deep with that one. Your average American won’t forget that.

99.85% of Americans will not remember this. Sorry. Voters have extremely short memories. About 40% of the electorate votes for the R because its R, 40% for the D because its D, and the remaining 20 don’t tune in til the month before the election.
