Barack Obama Suddenly Remembers He Almost Signed Up For The Military

Apparently worried about being at the top of the first Presidential ticket in decades with not a day of military experience, Obama is suddenly remembering that he once almost signed up for the military.

Obama disclosed that he had once considered serving in the military.

“You know, I actually did,” Obama said. “I had to sign up for Selective Service when I graduated from high school. And I was growing up in Hawaii. And I have friends whose parents were in the military. There are a lot of Army, military bases there.

“And I actually always thought of the military as an ennobling and, you know, honorable option. But keep in mind that I graduated in 1979. The Vietnam War had come to an end. We weren’t engaged in an active military conflict at that point. And so, it’s not an option that I ever decided to pursue.”

Well it’s nice that Obama thought about joining the military.  But he didn’t, so why does it matter?

And there’s a bit of a problem with Obama’s story.  He says he registered for the draft when he graduated in 1979.  But the draft wasn’t re-instated until 1980.

On March 25, 1975, Pres. Gerald Ford signed Proclamation 4360, Terminating Registration Procedures Under Military Selective Service Act, eliminating the registration requirement for all 18-25 year old male citizens. Then on July 2, 1980, President Jimmy Carter signed Proclamation 4771, Registration Under the Military Selective Service Act, retroactively re-establishing the Selective Service registration requirement for all 18-26 year old male citizens born on or after January 1, 1960. Only men born between March 29, 1957, and December 31, 1959, were completely exempt from Selective Service registration. The first registrations after Proclamation 4771 took place on Monday, July 21, 1980, for those men born in January, February and March 1960 at U.S. Post Offices.

Obama couldn’t have registered for the draft when he graduated.  It wouldn’t have even been possible.  He didn’t turn 18 until August of 1979, and Selective Service registration wasn’t re-instated until July of 1980.

Is this a big deal?  Not really, except in that it illustrates once again Obama being about his past.  He can’t be himself in front of the public.  He’s got to be a re-imagined version of himself, because the real Barack Obama that launched his political career in William Ayers’ home and sat in Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s congregation for twenty years and has the most liberal voting record in the US Senate isn’t about to get elected to the White House.

Not often do you get to see a politician lie so comprehensively about his past as the obama does. There are some, on both sides which do this, but they aren’t running for president.

I enjoying seeing the honesty contrasted by the dishonesty at NorthDecoder. They point out that North Dakota is showing the 0bama with a 1% lead, but ignore the falling behind in the polls, even as they work to smear Palin, and get cozy with Markos “Screw ‘em” Moulitas from Kos!

I think he was thinking about signing up while he was dodging sniper fire in Kosovo…
Barack “I’ve gazed into my navel enough to write two books about me” Obama suddenly remembers his urge to join the military, eh? Yeah. Right! A regular Mr. Genuine!

Proof- My thoughts exactly. How do you write two books about your young life and miss mentioning that you considered such a life-changing action? What a crock of shit.

Obama said to himself “I think we need someone to organize garage sales instead of protecting our country. What a loser!!Have you heard that Biden’s son and brother are in trouble? Something about screwing some partner out of money. You don’t hear much from the liberal media about that.

While I respect John McCain’s military service, in McCain’s day ALL men HAD to go into the military. Many guys went ahead and enlisted, because they knew they were going to get drafted anyway. Enlisting was a way to have some say about what branch of the service they could get into.

But would McCain have enlisted if there was no draft? No one knows that.

McCain’s being in the military was a legal requirement of his generation, and to suggest he would have enlisted without a draft is only a guess.

Considering how wild and selfish McCain was in his youth (his own words), I doubt he would have enlisted without a draft.

THis is as ridiculous as obama refuting the Surge & insisting that we will never know if his way would have worked.
Anyone can “what if” everything but in the meat world,"what if” doesn’t really matter.
McCain went to Serve his Country.
Obama didn’t.
Would it be fair, using your line of thinking, to question if he knew which country he would claim as his Home when he graduated high school?

I almost signed up for the military then didn’t. :(

Then I almost invented the first time machine…
Then I almost found the cure the cancer…
Then I almost created a substitute for oil…

But I didn’t.

It’s easy to say all the things you could’ve done.

When McCain went to the Naval Academy, He was pretty much had no choice. You have to serve a minimum number of years as an Officer

Eagle Eye on September 8, 2008 at 01:15 am

McCain was following his family tradition.  He wasn’t forced to join the service.

This is hilarious! Woulda, coulda, shoulda, that is all Barri has.

And no, McC did not “have” to go into the military. As did so many young men, Joe Biden and Dick Cheney and JFKerry among them, he could have gotten a college deferment. And like JFKerry, when his grade point average fell below the required level he would have gone into the service. You know? Like JFKerry did.

Somebody needs to raise the bullshit flag here.  There was NO requirement to register for Selective Service when Obama graduated high school in 1979.
