Barack Obama Encourages Personal Responsibility

For once, I actually agree with Obama:

“Parents if you don’t parent, we can’t improve our schools,” he said. “You’ve got to parent. You’ve got to turn off the television set in your house once in a while, you’ve got to put the video game away once in a while.”

“You should have a curfew in your house so your children aren’t out in the streets all night. You should meet with the teacher and find out what the homework is and help that child with the homework. And if you don’t know how to do the homework, don’t be embarrassed, find someone to help you.”

“Fathers, be fathers,” he added. “Be a part of your child’s life. Be a part of your child’s life and try to make them proud.

“And the last thing is, if your child is misbehaving at school don’t curse out the teacher. You know who you are. It’s not the teacher’s fault that your child is misbehaving. That’s some home training.”

The crowd reacted raucously and Obama laughed. “You know what I say is true, though. Don’t blame the teachers, and the government and the schools if you’re not doing your job.”

There’s not a thing in there that I disagree with.  I think far too many parents abdicate their parental responsibilities, and then complain when the government (and most often the schools) don’t do a good enough job disciplining and educating their children.  This is called personal responsibility, and we cannot expect to remain free and independent citizens if we expect the government to solve all our problems for us.

I will say, though, that I wish Obama would apply this kind of thinking to issues like health care.  If we cannot blame teachers for our children not being disciplined, then we cannot blame the government for not being able to secure health care for ourselves.  Or not being able to afford our mortgages, for that matter.

After all, this personal responsibility stuff cuts both ways.

The teacher unions won’t like this, though I suspect he’ll tell the teachers union bosses not to worry about it, like he did with Canada.

Rob, I think the message here is that people need to be responsible with their kids.

But overall, let the government decide how best to spend your money.

Give me a shout when he’s ok with school choice.

I think there are more behaviorial problems incubated in schools than you’d think.

There’s always going to be some students from bad homes. However when the parents from good families are struggling to raise their kids and retrain them from what they’ve learned in school where is the problem.

I’m really tired of the schools demanding more and more money while disavowing any responsibility for failure.

I’d agree with you, Whistler, but I think what Obama’s saying here has merit too.  I don’t know how many times I’ve heard parents talk about going off on teachers for disciplining their kids when, frankly, the kids deserved it.

Give me a shout when he’s ok with school choice.

I’m with you there.  If Obama wants parents to be more involved with the kids, why not empower those parents with school choice?

A touch question I’m betting Obama doesn’t want to answer.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

That’s all fine Rob.  But when I hear Obama say it I hear him repeating the NEA line that we should send them more money but not hold the school system accountable when they fail.

I was thinking about this a little further.  If your kid does act up in school you do in fact have to support the schools discipline process 100%.  (Some dads have been known to chuckle inwardly that boys will be boys. smile )

Because even if they did pick up the bad habits from their peers it’s the kids fault for going along.

If you don’t support the discipline your kid will suffer for it in the long run.

Unless Obama comes out strongly for school vouchers and homeschooling, along with parental notification, he’s just putting out more empty rhetoric.
On the other hand, he’s on record as regarding a child as “punishment”, so how sincere could he be?

Hallelujah lil’ doggy man!
And yes, I have to agree and I have even been know to laugh with the the ol’ boys (and girls too) will be boys .. but regardless as to whether I like a specific rule, I’ll stand behind the need to enforce it as it was meant to be.

It’s nice that Sen. Obama is standing up for the family in a speech; now howzabout standing up for the family in legislation?  Seems he’s all about taking responsibility away from families and giving it to government.

This is another instance of that proverb (ironically African?) that says something to the effect “your actions are shouting so loud I cannot hear what you’re saying”.

Yeah, the same goes for all those Christians who preach about all sort of things that are generally good advice.  It’s just empty rhetoric unless there is some sort of political promise behind it.

H(ater): So, you use empty rhetoric by Obama to bash Christians, eh?  Res ipsa loquitur.
Since Obama claims to be a Christian, he must be doubly bad, then, by your logic.

I think he was referring to your mother, r108.

I owed ya that one.

Stupid is as stupid does, Sven.  Did your mother have any children that lived?

He’s also on record specifically referring to his daughter, so you got that one wrong, as well.

None of those Christians are supporting legislation that they know counterdicts their rhetoric. Barack Obama had a history of voting to take power away from the family, and strengthen the schools. And now he’s saying that the blame for kids lies entirely on the parents.
