Ban on Ban

The New York City Council at work.
Here’s a list of the items that they banned or attempted to ban in 2006.

* Trans-fats.
* Aluminum baseball bats.
* The purchase of tobacco by 18- to 20-year-olds.
* Foie gras.
* Pedicabs in parks.
* New fast-food restaurants (but only in poor neighborhoods).
* Lobbyists from the floor of council chambers.
* Lobbying city agencies after working at the same agency.
* Vehicles in Central and Prospect parks.
* Cell phones in upscale restaurants.
* The sale of pork products made in a processing plant in Tar Heel, N.C., because of a unionization dispute.
* Mail-order pharmaceutical plans.
* Candy-flavored cigarettes.
* Gas-station operators adjusting prices more than once daily.
* Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
* Wal-Mart.
Some of these are just silly. (Candy-flavored cigarettes?)
Others are egregious: Outlawing Wal-Mart is tantamount to picking the pockets of New Yorkers who really can’t afford it.

    Penn and Teller circulated a petition to ban di-hydrogen monoxide (water = H2O )…they were sucessful!

    I’ve pulled this (the Penn & Teller) prank on people! Certainly not to this scale, but it’s so true how people will get all crazy about anything and everything. Thanks for posting the video! I’m still laughing about it!

    When will people start telling government to mind their own business?

  • Bat One

    I would like to see all of baseball go to wood bats.

    Carol,

    Most coaches and players would too. The problem is one of supply and demand. There is only a limited supply of American ash wood available, not enough to match the demand for all the high school and little league programs and players in the country.

  • Carol

    Most coaches and players would too.

    I understand the limited supply of ash, but I’m not sure most coaches and players would like the change. At least not most I have had dealings with. They like the home runs that players are more apt to get with an aluminum bat. The ball carries much farther.

    Uh people have been killed from balls hit from wooden bats as well. The issue is this is a personal choice one that should not even get to the point of being regulated by statute. What we need to do is a pass a law requiring our legislators to do their GD jobs.

    Hey Zsa I had a bit of a problem getting onto the site for awhile, my IT guy of course was blaming it on Rob’s end but finally found the problem and fixed it. I pop in from time to time but just recently resolved to get back in the sayanything mix.

    How have things been with you?

    For a homework assignment, my biology professor had us go to this website:

    http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html

    We had to turn in a written response the following day stating whether or not we thought this substance (water) should be banned and why. Being a sceptic, as soon as I started reading the information on there, I figured it was an environmental wacko site, so I copy and pasted di-hydrogen monoxide and did a search. My next step was to make a mental list of all my classmates I knew would show up with a new mission in life, lol. Yeah, that was at least half the class (all teachers now, by the way).

    I thought it was a great assignment.

    Hi Richard! Where have you been?

  • Cynthia

    Mr. Mxyzptlk,

    LOL, yes he did. Then he gave a short lecture on the importance of fact-checking, research etc.

    I Wondered where you were. I am still hooked on say anything AND WILLisms.com of course! AND last but not least File It Under… Ha! I love giving shameless plugs… Glad you are back!

    Others are egregious: Outlawing Wal-Mart is tantamount to picking the pockets of New Yorkers who really can’t afford it.

    Perhaps if there are only higher priced stores and restaurants in NYC, then all the poor people will leave and the councilmen won’t have to pretend they are helping them anymore.

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

    The Penn & Teller piece is illustrative of the fact that people can be easily mislead by junk science.

  • Mr. Mxyzptlk

    Did your professor tell them what di-hydrogen monoxide was after you handed in your assignment?

    I could just imagine their faces.

  • Carol

    I think they’re all egregious, except for the aluminum baseball bats. A Miles City, Montana American Legion player was killed when he was hit by a ball off an aluminum bat. I would like to see all of baseball go to wood bats. I think the stats would be much truer.

    Outlawing WALMART??? How can they do that. I’ve met people who resent Walmart here in Minot, but I always tell them that if Walmart makes it possible for a young married couple to afford coats, hats, and groceries then I’m all for them.
