B-52 At Minot Airforce Base Accidentally Armed With Nukes

Doh.

The US Air Force has launched an investigation after a B-52 bomber flew across the US last week mistakenly loaded with nuclear-armed missiles.

It follows reports in the Army Times that five missiles were unaccounted for during the three-hour flight from North Dakota to Louisiana.

The air force said the cruise missiles were safe at all times.

Army Times said the missiles were to be decommissioned but were mistakenly mounted on the bomber’s wings.

The W80-1 warhead has a yield of five to 150 kilotons, the paper said.

Johnathan thinks that if these planes had been on bombing practice a lot of people might have been killed.  I think that’s probably an overreaction.  For one thing, I believe (but I’m no expert so correct me if I’m wrong) nuclear weapons have to be activated before they can be blown up.  If you just drop an unactivated nuke it’d just hit the ground.

Plus, I don’t believe they practice bombing by actually dropping bombs in North Dakota.  I think the practice bombing ranges are all in other parts of the country.  So this mistake was more of a proliferation threat than anything.

Regardless, an embarrassing mistake to be sure.

I read this in the am and would have posted it but, I figured y’all would think I was pickin on ND for not being the most intellectual thinkin’ folks flying bombs around and all.

Yeah, they have to be armed first.  There always is a very slight chance that if the plane crashed and a fire were to occur that it could explode as a high powered dirty bomb, but actual nuclear detonation is highly unlikely.

FreeRepublicans.com on September 5, 2007 at 03:13 pm

A guy I knew years ago who worked on those things told me you’d have a better chance of jumping the Grand Canyon in a Ford Pinto than setting off a nuke accidentally.

This is the first such mistake in 60+ years.  Call me unconcerned.  If it starts happening every other day, then I will start worrying.

I just sent them a letter requesting a nuclear-armed missile, I’m going to decorate my front yard with it. Do you think they’ll send it?

Didn’t he just make a surprise visit to a war zone (North Dakota)?

i just saw this on ABC a bit ago.  we all know they’re not always the most accurate, but brian ross was reporting that the weapons were neither armed, nor even fused, so there was no chance of them going off.

Yes, embarrassing enough to terminate the poor commander in charge.

Anna, at least by terminate we do not mean cut off his head with a rusty knife, in front of his children, using crappy Iphone video.

A missed propaganda opportunity, imo.

Putin would have loved reading that shit.

I wonder if they don’t still fly training flights with live nukes anymore.

The fact is that there have been thousands of flights done that way during the Cold War and it wasn’t a problem.

I actually feel pretty good that such a small glitch is treated as a major problem.

Back in the late 70’s a B-52 on the ready pad in Grand Forks caught fire and exploded.  They found one of the bombs in the ditch.

My GAWD, Marty. Next your gonna tell us you are still running Windows 95! Modernize, babe, modernize.

As for da bomb in da ditch, people do not grasp that nukes don’t go off UNLESS you set them off. We used to scare hell out of Basic Trainees by shoving pallets of artillery joes off the back of trucks, and watch those troops run. LOL!!! Almost as fun as tear gassing them in the dead of night. Good times.

What matters here is the kind of mistake made.  The mistake wasn’t in grabbing the wrong missiles, this flight was always intended to carry these 5 nuclear missiles.  No, the mistake was in putting them on the wings instead of in the cargo section of the plane.

Certainly a more grave error would have been going on some kind of flight that was supposed to include armed conventional cruise missiles and accidently grabbing nuclear missiles.  Though I doubt that the two are armed the same so that if it were a live fire exercise, the error would have been immediately self-evident.

Marty: You might want to try Firefox. IE has been real buggy of late in trying to keep up with Rob!

Clarifications:
Bombing Practice - flown at a bombing range out in the desert, away from populated areas

Fail Safe - multiple layers of physical and electronic steps that have to be completed before a weapon is armed, including accelerometers (bomb must be falling at terminal velocity) and permission codes.

Armed Bombers - a B-52 that is not armed is a very expensive training aid.  They call them bombers because that’s what they do - carry bombs.  What type of bombs is classified, and the three Air Force Knuckleheads (redundant?) who leaked this information should be up on charges.

MakNut on September 6, 2007 at 05:28 am

Would the Air Force say anything else?

brian ross was reporting that the weapons were neither armed, nor even fused.

Much ado about nothing; simply another excuse for the leftie loons to demonstrate their nuttiness and anti-US agenda.

I’d think that Dorgan had better start kissing BRAC ass well before the next round of base closings.  Minot’s been on the brink for years and this is surely not going to help them.

k_lunch on September 6, 2007 at 06:39 am

See MakNut’s comments above for the cold hard facts of the issue.

It wouldn’t have mattered if they had stacked nukes on that plane like cordwood. The CAN’T go off without all the failsafe protocols being observed. r108 also hit the issue squarely:

Much ado about nothing; simply another excuse for the leftie loons to demonstrate their nuttiness and anti-US agenda.

Now, as far as the morons who actually screwed up and loaded nukes, well, Lucy, somebody’s got some ‘splainin’ to do!

Now, be patient you guys… Marty is probably is still getting used to not using his Commodore 64. Give him a lil’ slack and we’ll technically update him into the correct century yet!

Failsafe No.1,
no one moves a
nuclear weapon
without orders.

After they missed that one , no telling what they thought they were doing.

WOOF on September 6, 2007 at 11:41 am

They had orders, they just carried them out incorrectly. Had to be an officer in this balls up somewhere. If he would pull his nose out of his direct superior’s ass for a few minutes things like this would stop happening to him. Or her.

I guess this is just a coincidence?

Since the story broke 7 days ago, about the missing nuke\clandestine operation from Minot, we have the following for those who are paying attention:

1.  All six people listed below are from Minot Airforce base
2.  All were directly involved as loaders or as pilots
3.  All are now dead
4.  All within the last 7 days in ‘accidents’

Silly me, seeing more than there is to this story. I guess this is just another coincidence.

But no doubt now that there will be more coincidences in the near future because as I have stated before, you need about fourteen signatures to get an armed nuke onto a B-52, and they may have told their wives and friends.

The Pundit on September 16, 2007 at 11:07 am

All dead in the last 7 days?  I don’t think so kook.

I suppose you want to tie it all together for us.

How a guy that was killed in an auto accident last JULY is tied up with this?

Watch out for black OR dark green helicopters.  I hear tinfoil keeps them out of you head.
