Ayman Al Zawahiri Makes The Case For Staying In Iraq

In his latest video, al Qaeda’s number two man tells the world that America is much too busy “searching for a way out” to concentrate on actually winning the war:

“You must be patient and steadfast,” he says. “Rejoice, for victory is near, with Allah’s permission, and the herds of crusaders have begun to split up and their sole concern has become searching for a way out.”

And then he makes the case for Iraq and Afghanistan (along with Palestine and Somalia) being the central fronts in the war on terror:

In the hour and half long video, which surfaced today on the website Strategic Translations, a translation and terror analysis firm, Zawahiri urges his followers to hurry to Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, and Somalia.

I hear anti-war types talk all the time about pulling out of Iraq so that we can concentrate our resources on fighting the “real” war on terror. Yet time and again our Islamic extremist enemies, up to and including people like Zawahiri and Osama bin Laden himself, have named Iraq and Afghanistan as the central fronts in the global war on terror. They are concentrating all their resources on beating us in those places. Meaning two things:

  1. Those resources, thankfully, aren’t being directed toward attacking us here at home.
  2. Fighting the war on terror means fighting in Iraq.

If we’re going to fight terrorism and al Qaeda where else do we put boots on the ground outside of Iraq and Afghanistan? And how do we reconcile disengaging from the terrorist forces in Iraq and going elsewhere if we truly do want to fight these terrorists?
I’d like to hear proponents of withdrawing from Iraq answer these questions honestly.

You don’t get it. The goal is to get us and our influence out of the Mid East.

Well, obviously YOU don’t get it as you seem to be in concert with the Islamic terorists whose goal is to get everybody except themselves out of the mid-east. The fact that number includes all Christians, Jews and anyone else that is not muslim apparently has no significance to you.

Your support of Islamic intolerance is irrational.

Zawahiri says that he wins if and when the U.S. pulls out of Iraq (although we will always have a military presence there / even if it is guarding our embassy). But I bet the Iraqi people (Kurds, Shia and Sunni) beg to differ with him. He’s not their representative, nor can he give them a better life. He’ll be booted out of Iraq as soon as the people of Iraq get their first chance to see him come out of hiding. Zawahiri is not Iraqi he’s from Cairo. If the Iraqi people can turn on their dictator Saddam they will certainly turn on this man who brings ruin to a country not his own.

You don’t get it. The goal is to get us and our influence out of the Mid East. By stumbling into an Iraq war we cannot win militarily, we have given Al Zawahiri a victory. All he is saying is that time is on his side in Iraq. The other major goal of Al Qaeda is to stop what they see as the subversion of their culture by the westernization of Muslim and Arab immigrants largely through our university educational system. Muslim students either return to their homelands spreading western culture or remain to be even further assimilated into western culture. Al Qaeda wants that stopped and the anti Arab anti Muslim sentiment that now increasingly pervades in the west is exactly what Al Qaeda wants to foster. Al Qaeda is winning on both of these fronts.
While we militarily and especially diplomatically blundered into Iraq, now that we are there, we are stuck with that tar baby. A bigger debacle will result should we leave with our tail tucked between our legs. Problem is that the American people don’t have the stomach for an extended military effort in the Mid East. And the American people absolutely will not provide the economic and diplomatic support required to win that war. Our politicians are long past providing leadership here, and react only to the latest polling data. Blame and run will be the justification for leaving. The even worse disaster to follow will afford ample opportunity for both pro and anti war politico’s to point fingers. Fact is, neither side has a clue about Mid East politics and culture. Neither side has the political or moral will to recognize the underlying problems in the region; and without that, we will never get to viable solutions.

    You cannot fight terrorism militaristically.

Do you mean “militarily”, meaning by military force? If so, you are wrong. The Clinton approach of treating terrorism as a law enforcement problem enabled 9/11. I call that a big mistake. Our military defeats them, then the diplomats work out the surrender terms. That’s the way to do it.

    Steve and James… well said.

Mark… I fully endorse death for our enemies. But the terrorists will not claim a territory, put on uniforms, and fight us. They hide in hospitals and houses of worship; they corrupt young minds with biased political analysis; they manipulate tribal and religious loyalties; no tactic is beneath them. We have to counteract their efforts in all these dimensions. Military might is not enough, it’s not even the main event.

Although I cannot say I am a true proponent of withdraw (now that we’ve made the massive, massive mistake of entering we can’t just up and leave) the very simple (and truthful) answer to your question is that your approach towards deterring terrorism is fundamentally flawed. You cannot fight terrorism militaristically. As with the war on drugs, the problem being “fought” is a conceptually secondary problem stemming from more fundamental root causes. i.e. terrorism stems from idealogical and cultural differences between two societies and, therefore, cannot be simply addressed by physically fighting members of the opposing ideology. If you really want to stem terrorism rather than exacerbate the problem, perhaps you should focus on encouraging cultural understanding and the development of living conditions (particularly, progressive education) in those areas of the world that are in fundamental support of terrorist activities against the US. Ignorance and a lack of understanding is the primary cause of both terrorism and the subsequent “war” against it.

    Rob, nice piece.

James, are you arguing that terrorism can be defeated WITHOUT the use of military force? Didn’t we try that already in the 90′s to no avail?

Education? Ya, Dr. Zawahiri and millionaire Osama bin Laden didn’t have enough money or education that’s the problem.

Why is it so hard for some people to just understand we have an enemy with a totalitarian ideology that has NO INTEREST in conforming or tolerating anything else? These people MUST be defeated military, they will either be killed by military force or they will die when they detonate themselves in major suicide attacks somewhere. How many times do they need to do this over and over and over for people to get it? Another attack here on the U.S.? I hope not but it seems that way.

James – You cannot fight terrorism militaristically.

Yes you can. We’re killing a shitload of terrorists “militaristically”.

As with the war on drugs, the problem being “fought” is a conceptually secondary problem stemming from more fundamental root causes. i.e. terrorism stems from idealogical and cultural differences between two societies and, therefore, cannot be simply addressed by physically fighting members of the opposing ideology.

You’re right. You can’t solve the problem by physically fighting them. You have to kill them. This has the benefit of being a permanent solution!

If you really want to stem terrorism rather than exacerbate the problem, perhaps you should focus on encouraging cultural understanding…

    “The infidels must die!”

Go ahead James – here’s your cue to start the “cultural understanding”. Good luck.

Ignorance and a lack of understanding is the primary cause of both terrorism and the subsequent “war” against it.

Nice to see you blame those who fight back against Islamic terrorists. Bend over James.

steve cleaves is a defeatist, By stumbling into an Iraq war we cannot win militarily, we have given Al Zawahiri a victory.

steve cleaves quits before the game is over.

    You cannot fight terrorism militaristically.

Enemies of our liberty acting with force against Americans have, and must always be destoyed militarily. What benefit is there in taking the time to understand what motivates people to kill us?
