Author Rejects Honorary UND Degree

Because of UND’s “Fighting Sioux” logo and nickname.

Minnesota author Louise Erdrich has rejected an honorary degree from the University of North Dakota because it continues to use the “Fighting Sioux” team name and logo—a contentious and litigious issue in Grand Forks.

In a letter to university President Charles Kupchella, Erdrich—who has American Indian roots—said that the offer means “a great deal” to her and that she would happily accept, were it not for the logo.

With that, the award-winning Minneapolis author of 11 novels and numerous other works joined a battle over whether the university should drop its logo and nickname. Last fall, university officials sued the National Collegiate Athletic Association over its finding that use of the logo and name is “hostile” and “abusive.” A trial is set for December.

Another self-important liberal grandstanding on an issue that wouldn’t even be controversial were it not for grandstanding self-important liberals causing a stink.

Here is the UND logo:

image

Someone please explain to me how that is offensive or “racially intolerant” in any way, shape or form.  It is a positive depiction of an Indian warrior.  I can’t imagine that the image causes anyone, even Indians themselves, any more anguish or anger than this image from the Minnesota Vikings…

image

...does me as a Scandinavian American.

I mean, if the Sioux logo is so outrageous then what about the North Dakota Highway Patrol logo?

image

What about North Dakota state highway signs?

image

Are all of these images “offensive” and “racially insensitive,” or are the people making these claims a bunch of culturally-blinkered twits using this trumped-up “controversy” as a way to make themselves appear important and socially aware?

Yeah, doesn’t she know that the Wounded Knee Massacre happened in South Dakota, and that everything that has ever happened to the Sioux in North Dakota since the beginning of time has been nothing but benevolent?

After all, if Rob can see nothing wrong with a cultural caricature of his heritage, then surely these people who obviously have never had anything bad happen to them, ever, should have no problem whatsoever with an obscure school appropriating their heritage as a mascot.

Ah the bitter, spittle-flecked rantings of a liberal outraged over something silly.

It’s like music to my ears.

By the way, UND is hardly obscure.  We’ve got one of the best hockey programs in the nation.

As for the nickname, everything is offensive to somebody.  Indian nicknames/logos, etc. are prevalent in society.  The Sioux logo/nickname is a thing of honor, not of derision or offensiveness.

Plus, the NCAA has some pretty severe double standards here.  The Illinois Illini are being allowed to keep their nickname, so why can’t the Sioux?

Ahh, bitter and spittle-flecked. I like that; particularly in light of your post, Rob.

College Hockey? I didn’t know that even existed. But then again, down here in the south we play actual sports.

Seriously, go and look and what FSU did; I’m no fan of the Seminoles but what they did vis a vis Chief Jim Billy and the Seminole nation was admirable. I.E., approach the tribe, offer them some creative input/financial incentive, and allow the nation to weigh-in on the appropriation of their identity. The tribe’s happy, the school’s happy, win win for the Chief and that sack of excrement known as Bobby Bowden.

What you guys are doing is essentially sticking your fingers in their chest, throwing a hissy, and saying something to the effect of ‘Remember when we cut off your great-grandmother’s breast as a souvenir? Well, check it out, now we’re going to use the name of your nation and a caracature of your extinct tribe as a mascot. But don’t worry, we’ve got a regionally-famous hockey team you can be proud of.’

Has anyone in UND approached the Sioux and asked them, or are you guys going to go with the whine-and-moan strategy of faux persecution?

Rob,

Good one!  Insults are just insults, but creative derision-heaping, done with panache, can be very entertaining and thought-provoking.  Thanks for the laugh.

Also glad that the side-bar is back, but STILL think ole’ Blackjack was best.

The haughty indignation of Leftists over a perceived slight is merely smokescreen for their wanting to divide society into warring factions and place themselves at the front of a screaming mob.

Yet more proof that they are a social corrosive and work for the World wide Revolution, against America.

UND has tried that.  The problem is that the Sioux of North Dakota aren’t nearly as organized as the Seminoles of Florida, apparently.  One year a tribal council will vote on the logo as being ok, the next year the council will turn over and they’ll reject it.  Plus, the Sioux are spread out over more than one reservation so you’re dealing with multiple authorities.  Some agree, some won’t.

It’s not as simple as you make it sound.

To be perfectly honest with you, though, the only time this even becomes an issue is one some dumbshit liberal like you gets all up in arms.  I really don’t see why the rest of us level-headed folks should have to jump through hoops to satisfy your retarded liberal guilt.

Pa ha ha ha ha!

Rob, that is absolutely just precious.

I could care less about your obscure school’s mascot (being an outsider, I must admit that the only thing I know about your school is that it has a logo that offends some people.) I could care less about an author with native heritage taking offense to your obscure school’s mascot and trying to send a message.

The reason why I posted was because of your ‘level-headed’ response. Seriously, who is being the dumbshit here? Me, or the guy bitching about an author refusing an honor because she finds the organization bestowing the honor clings to symbols that are offensive to her heritage. Are you trying to say that she should have no qualms about your schools choice of symbolism?

I’m not asking you to jump through hoop one; if you want to keep a caracature and believe it honors a recently slaughtered people, have at it. Just don’t feign innocence (or stupidity) when someone else calls the university on it.

I will submit that the reason why you’re whining about this whole affair is because you know you are dead wrong.

Or it could be because I think that dumb liberals like you are wrong in trying to bully one of my state’s colleges into your idea of political correctness.

What a load of crap!  In the first place, according to Wikipedia, the woman is no more than one eighth Native, if that.  Granted, that’s more than the self-righteous twit, Ward Churchill… but still…

Second, “the woman” is certainly entitled to whatever opinion suits her mood.  But if she expresses that opinion publicly she is also entitled to whatever criticism anyone else feels like heaping on her.  That’s how a free society operates.  If she is put off or offended by the criticisms of her, perhaps next time she’ll keep her mouth shut.

Finally, exactly who the hell are you to determine whether someone else’s “outrage” is real or not?  Nothing you’ve written here over the past months would lead anyone to regard you are remotely insightful, much less prescient.  If you want to criticize the words or the actions of another that’s certainly your perogative, as it is everyone else’s.  But please don’t try to pass yourself off as sufficiently astute to evaluate someone else’s motivation.  You’re not.

She did write a book that was ok, Love Medicine, it was about an Indian family in North Dakota. It took place over a few decades mainly the 1970’s.  It dealt with Alcoholism and disfunction.

The book is plenty old now and there was a follow up.  But I think this move is just Erdrich trying to gain face after being accused of not being at the front of Native American struggles.

Whatever Erdrich’s Indian blood quantum is, the fact is that she didn’t grow up or live on the reservation.  She lived in Wahpeton and only visited her reservation relatives for brief periods.

She grew up in white society, but of course she uses that very limited contact with the reservation to hype her books as if she’s some sort of “real” Indian, when in fact she was merely a visitor.  It’s all for book sales, it’s her gimmick, her schtick.

This public refusal of an honorary degree is merely more of the same, trying to use this issue to hype herself once again, to “validate” her Indian credentials, to jump on the anti-nickname bandwagon and ride the Activist Indian wave as long as she can.  (And if it sells a few more of her books, so much the better…)

Perhaps she should talk to the artist who created the UND logo.  He is a member of the tribe she of whom she claims membership.  Not only is he an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, he grew up there.  As did I (and yes, I’m a member, too.)

I applaud Ms. Erdrich for her standing by her beliefs. It’s pretty obvious it’s just yet another ploy by UND to try to get ‘another native’ as I’ve heard from them that is not affected by the logo?

If she is a nobody or has nothing good to write, then why would UND go as far as offering her a honorary degree from them?

You all sure seem to talk a lot about stuff you know nothing about. So narrow minded, try looking at both perspectives. I tried supporting the logo although I wasn’t comfortable with any Native American mascot or nickname for sports, I still tried being okay with it, but after years at UND I just couldn’t. I won’t waste time explaining because I am sure no one really wants to hear it… Or will try to cut me down just as you seem to enjoy cutting down most Natives on this blog.

For any voter trying to choose between the two candidates for commander in chief, there is no better test than this: When American strategy in a critical theater was up for grabs, John McCain proposed a highly unpopular and risky path, which he accurately predicted could lead to success. Barack Obama proposed a popular and politically safe route that would have led to an unnecessary and debilitating American defeat at the hands of al Qaeda.

Don’t worry, Whistler!
Andy L. (picture: thumb and index finger at 90° angle across forehead) probably thinks “bigot” is a French word, pronounced “ “Beeg -Oh” like Big O tires…
Maybe he thinks it’s a compliment…

For any voter trying to choose between the two candidates for commander in chief, there is no better test than this: When American strategy in a critical theater was up for grabs, John McCain proposed a highly unpopular and risky path, which he accurately predicted could lead to success. Barack Obama proposed a popular and politically safe route that would have led to an unnecessary and debilitating American defeat at the hands of al Qaeda.

Joel, clicked on your comment, like you suggested.  Already read it once, not necessary to read it again.  Many of the things this red lake man talks about are true on many reservations.  We have mechanisms to correct our own problems without interference from outsiders.  I imagine you are non-Indian.  Am I correct?  Have you ever lived on a reservation?  Do you know how the politics work?  Do you understand the relaionship each member has with his or her reservation community?  Anyway, you’re not telling me anything new.

Proof and Whistler, ha ha.  You guys are so funny!

Bigot, by the way, originates from old french.  It’s a noun and is defined as “a person who is intolerant, esp. in matters of religion, race or politics.

Looks like y’all fit the description to a T.

Also, it’s not a compliment.  When I call you guys bigots, I mean it.

To be quite frank there’s only been one bigot in this thread and any of the related threads.

Sorry Charley.

Right on Andy L! What is up with Rob Port and his cronies. I’ll bet they grew up dreaming about Native Americans. It’s just that no Native American will get close enough....I’ll tell you what boys/girls/monkey The point here is Native Americans don’t want to be apart of your topic, it’s that simple. We have our own way of Communicating, our own Constitutions, our own Colleges, our own Hospitals, our own News Papers, Our own Lawyers, Our own Doctors, our own Authors, our own governments and anything else is our own. You do not have my permission to discuss our issues.

That may be your opinion or even the views of your tribe but I don’t for one minute believe that all Indians live by that creed.  Most Indians I have encountered believe they are Americans first and whatever their tribe origin second.  If you thought that way you wouldn’t make ridiculous statements like

You do not have my permission to discuss our issues.

because you would be respecting the US Constitution and its free speech and press provisions.

We have lives, own our homes and businesses, and do not live on welfare like you do. Your venomous self-loathing is clearly evident from everything you post in these threads. Your pathetic envy of other people and their lives is what is dragging you down. Your mind has been poisoned. I feel bad for your children, they have to overcome your racism and blind hatred for all things American before they can build successful lives. What a pity.

We’ve had a similar issue in WI with the Marquette Warriors.  The University changed the name based on criticism from a small vocal offended minority within the largely non-offended minority.  Seems to me, that some people are professional “get offendeders” with very little reason.  If honoring a heritage is wrong, what should we do, ignore the heritage???  Wouldn’t that be bad for multi-culturalists (and I’m one of those)???  Maybe the offended could offer some creative input in how to do the honoring, but seeking outright abolishment makes little sense.

Wisconsin is real.  I have relatives that live at Lac du Flambeau and Minocqua.  It’s a beautiful place.

Only thing, bigots reside over there too.  Remember Stop Treaty Abuse (STA for “Crist” sake) and “Treaty Beer”?  Left a bad taste in everyones mouths.  Spear an Indian - Save a Fish?  Wow, what tactics.  Even David Duke and the Posse Comitatus was involved.  You know what they say...Birds of a Feather!

Kegger and Beav are from there!  Now they are joining in with the rest of the republican bigots at Dakota Beacon.  Steve Cates!  He’s a pig too.  Rob Porta potty?  He’s a pig too.  Kegger and Beav?  Pigs.

OINK. OINK. OINK.

Yes we are!!!  And yes, I will take credit for making fun of the Indian tribes here acting like greedy kids protecting their candy.  Did you actually read the article or study the issue???  I’m guessing not, because it’s a great piece of satire.  Got mentioned on two radio programs.

And yes, Wisconsin kicks ass, except in January when it’s wayyyyyyyy to damn cold to even play outside.  (Actually, if it weren’t for Holiday parties, the last six weeks of the year suck too, cold and wet, very crummy.  The other 40 weeks though, pretty nice.)

Andy, what is your suggestion for the school name and all the other things, i.e. highway signs, which are attempts to honor the Sioux heritage.  Is it the artwork that needs changing?  The actual names?  The song lyrics?  What?  What is offending and needs tweeking to be sufficiently honorable?  I think everybody wants that.  Maybe that’s where you should focus.

BTW, I’m Italian, and I laff at the idiotas who complain about the Sopranos.  Fuck them, and fuck you too for calling me a racist you ignorant puke.

Check this out!  I posted at the other site, thought you guys might want to see it here too.  The modern anti-Indian advocacy emanates from a white “backlash” against progress made by various tribes since the 1960s.  Tribes have increased legal power through enforcement of various treaty rights.  In Washington State, former senator Gorton fought tribes for many years because of his hatred of Indians and the fact that they won substantial treaty rights through the courts while he was attorney general for the state.  Fishing rights!  Hunting rights!  Water rights!  Jurisdictional rights!  The increased legal powers supposedly infringe on the “liberties” of individual white tax payers.  Whites are now the new Indians!  They are oppressed and victimized by “Red Apartheid”.

There is a real agenda in this country to roll back Indian rights.  Rob, check it out!  Maybe you already realize all of this and are establishing yourself as a primary vehicle to begin the roll back!

We Indians have faced obstacles far greater than this before, and we have overcome!  In Wisconsin (beav and kegger’s state), tribal members, Chippewa Indians just like us at Turtle Mountain, were called “Timber niggers”, “welfare warriors”, and other demeaning characterizations.  I’ll guarantee that privately they laugh about such characterizations that Indians drive “Welfare Cadillacs”.  These are their tactics!  Don’t let them sucker you in!  Many of these filth spewing idiots even advocate total genocide as a final solution!  We are considered children, willing to accept handouts as a single means of survival.  They also believe that a vast majority of Indians are passive and easily controlled by the more aggressive and greedy.

PARR, ICERR, CERA, TEA and other anti-Indian groups are national in scope and have thousands of members!  Just like with the KKK in years past, many of them are covert and would never admit to membership.  The easiest way to identify them is to look at how they present there hidden agendas!

Another tactic they use - “We’re not racist” and “We’re only concerned that you people have equal rights guaranteed by our constitution”.

There are many in Indian Country that have a true understanding of what’s going on.  As Indian people, we have fought giants in the past.  We have taken on conglomerates to protect Mother Earth!  Don’t let these guys get the best of you.  Keep your focus!  Stay united, and stay strong!
