Aussies Pull Chirac-Bush-Queen Elizabeth Threeway Billboards

Classy...

VIENNA, Austria Dec 28, 2005 — Her Majesty would not have been amused. Neither would President Bush or his French counterpart, Jacques Chirac, over a Vienna-wide art project depicting them naked and engaged in a sexual act with British Queen Elizabeth II.

The work of "euroPART," an independent artists' group, the scenes being displayed on electronic billboards across the Austrian capital were also embarrassing for the government just days before the country assumes the European Union's rotating presidency Sunday.

Austrian media reported that the offending images were yanked Wednesday just a day after they started flashing at motorists on personal orders of Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel. A woman answering the telephone at the chancellor's public information department who refused to identify herself said she could not confirm the report.

Pictures of the billboards here. WARNING: The billboards are graphic.

They've got Bush depicted as a girl, for whatever reason.

I guess "art" really is in the eye of the beholder.

Austria is no fan of free speech, I see.

That may be the first time I’ve seen the word “Aussie” used to refer to an Austrian. Anyone else?

I didn’t know that “free speech” applied to public displays of pornography.

I’ve seen it lots of times.  Most recently in the article I linked in this post.

Where?

No, you used it as an “inhabitant of Austria.” Which is apparently correct; a google news search showed a bunch of hits for it (though not as many as “Aussie AND Australia” had). I’ve just never seen it before, and it threw me off.

Didn’t I use “Aussie” as an “inhabitant of Australia?”

Oh, duh! (slaps head)

Still, dictionary.com defines an “Aussie” as “a native or inhabitant of Australia,” as does wikipedia. I’ve just never heard it any other way.

Well it threw me off too.  I saw “Aussie” and read all the subsequent “Austria’s” as “Australia.”

Man oh man, I thought I was talking about Australia.

You’re right, I’ve never seen “Aussie” applied to Austrians either....

Well that’s a terrible picture.  I was expecting something a bit more “artistic” than that.  Kind of reminds me of my liberal friend’s photo shop job of Kerry and Bush getting it on.  It was a tasteless picture but was actually pretty funny and the work was a lot better than the Austrian pic.

I “Google-News-ed” it and received a couple dozen links, so it can’t be entirely wrong.

Well, ABC used it...and tricked me into thinking that this was happening in Australia.
