Attempted Plane Hijacking In Michigan?

Seems that way to me...

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) -- A man with a one-way ticket to Yemen attempted to board a plane with a knife hidden in a book, authorities said.

Mohammed Ghanem, 21, of Hamtramck, was jailed Saturday on $500,000 after being arraigned on a charge of possessing a weapon in the sterile area of an airport.

Ghanem was arrested Thursday at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after Transportation Security Administration officers detected the knife "artfully concealed" in the book, airport spokesman Michael Conway said.

When I read early reports on this story all it said was that the guy had tried to get a knife on the plane. I figured it may have just been somebody who forgot to leave their pocketknife at home, but the fact that the knife was "artfully concealed" in a book tells me that this guy had a plan.

I don't think he would have been successful, though. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they got this guy before he got on the plane, but in the post-9/11 era I don't see someone being able to take control of a plane with just a knife. People will remember that the last planes hijacked with knives were crashed into buildings and they're likely to simply bum-rush anyone who tries it again.

Still, maybe this guy had accomplices? Or additional facets to his plan once he got on board?

Scary, regardless.
