At Least One Third Of British Households Entirely Dependent On Government Handouts

And by “entirely dependent” I mean the government entitlements make up at least half of the total income for the household.

Unbelievable?  Believe it.

One in three households across Britain is now dependent on the state for at least half its income, it emerged today.

Official government figures showed that more than seven million households are getting most of their income from government handouts.

The figures also reveal the huge gulf in welfare dependency between single parent and two-parent households.

The most important statement in the article:

The report is scathing about how New Labour welfare policy has been designed to “create beholden voters rather than independent people”.

Gee, politicians creating entitlements for the populace in order to make said populace dependent upon government and thus dependent on the sort of liberal politician who promotes the growth in government?  Say it isn’t so!

And it doesn’t just happen in Europe, either.  Look at the Indians here in America who are told that they need endless entitlements and government subsidy in order to subsist.  Look at the farmers who are told that their family farms would perish without government subsidy.  Look at the college students who are told that they can’t get an education without government subsidy.

We all like the idea of the government doing good works, but what we must beware of are government policies which seek to make us more dependent on the government rather than more independent.

One third is an awful lot of dependents for one country!

Zsa Zsa on February 12, 2007 at 03:32 pm

France and Sweden are not near that level, at least as of last summer.

No country can long endure with such a high level of government dependence. It means the other 2/3 must pay 1/6 of their annual income, money they worked for, to support the lazy 1/3. At this pace, what happens when it becomes 50:50? That means one half of the annual income of each person will be taxed to support the other half.

By the way, I am no economist, so if the percentages work out differently, it is the principle and the threat that I am talking about. Plus, that is exactly what the Democrats want to do here, they want as many people dependent upon the government as possible because those people will have to keep the Democrats in power or work for a living, so they’ll vote Democrat no matter the price they must pay in other less savory social regulations.

This is what the liberal left has in mind, regardless of their admitting to it or not. It makes me ill to think that a once great nation like the UK has come to this. This is a clear demonstration of the need for common sense in government, and for the elected Republicans to ACT like Republican’s rather than act like bloated fat cat liberals with the nations and states checkbooks, ready to spend.

Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day.  Teach a man to fish and he can feed himself for life....

Firstly, Britain was nearly bankrupted by WWII. They were still living on rations into the start of the fifties, yet they have recovered to become a prosperous nation again. Maybe their economic methods work to some degree.

Also taxes are quite high too, so a lot of the money this third are getting is basically their taxes back. And then there is the theory of government spending increasing aggregate demand.

“Keynes had located the fundamental defect of the free market system in its incapacity to distinguish between `speculation’ and `enterprise.’ Hence, it had a tendency to be dominated by speculators, interested not in the long-term yield on assets but only in the short-term appreciation in asset values. Their whims and caprices, causing sharp swings in asset prices, determined the magnitude of productive investment and, therefore, the level of aggregate demand, employment and output in the economy. The real lives of millions of people were determined by the whims of ‘a bunch of speculators’ under the free market system.”—Prabhat Patnaik

The mind boggles at logic like this.

Yep, I give you a dollar. A year later you give me 23 cents back. Thats fair! The economicly challenged think this is how to raise people out of poverty.

When you get a handout, what is your incentive to be productive?  This is definitely what Hillary and Barack Hussein Obama have in mind for us.  It is the perfect illustration why socialist economies are stagnant, even with a huge market like the US to sell to, and a generous country like the US to give them foreign aid and furnish most of their national defense.  If they had to pay for a functioning armed force, they would be bankrupt.

The only legitimate role of government with regard to economics is to prevent fraud and provide a remedy- civil and criminal penalties- in case of fraud.

People have the mistaken notion that the free market has no rules.  But it most certainly does.  All our problems are due to government meddling.

robert108 on February 13, 2007 at 07:46 am

I’m sure that Hillary and Barak are looking at Britain with envy.  Imagine having 1/3 of voters beholden to you.  You could treat them like crap and they would still vote for you…

Wait: Is that “Liberals and the Poor in Britain”, or “Democrats and Minorities in the US”?

electnixon on February 13, 2007 at 08:13 am

Knob Creek! I expended 4000 rds of .30 down there a couple of years ago.

r108, it is a tenet of the nanny staters that people are incapable of taking care of their own lives. And it really pisses them off when people get off intitlement programs. Here in PA there are several court cases against county human services offices for attempting to block people from getting off public assistance/welfare. One went so far as to discourage a woman from attending a community college nurses aid training course.

The population of the UK is approx. sixtyone million people. One third of sixtyone million is around twenty million people. That is alot to support so of course the taxes are going to be huge. That is outrageous..!
