Army Hits Recruiting Goal For 14th Straight Month

And Reuters craps all over it, complete with an ominous-looking photo of U.S. soldiers.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Army, which fell short in recruiting last year, made its 14th straight monthly goal in July and is expected to hit its 2006 target despite the Iraq war making recruiting harder, officials said on Thursday.

Jeff Spara, in charge of Army recruiting policy, denied the Army has been making its recruiting goals by taking lower-quality volunteers who previously might have been rejected, as some experts contend.

"It looks very good right now," Spara said of the active-duty Army reaching its goal of 80,000 new soldiers in fiscal 2006, which ends September 30. It fell about 7,000 recruits short of the same numerical goal in fiscal 2005.

You can almost taste the hostility coming out of this article.

Wasn't there a time in this country when it was considered a good thing that our military was doing well with recruiting? The way its reported in this article you get the idea that it's as bad as unemployment rates going up or something.

Well duh, maybe it’s because they’re raising the age limit.

If thier intention is to scare recruits away with that pic (and I agree with you it probably is) then they’re gonna fail. Thats a seriously cool pic!

I’m going to rip it off and make an avatar for an American buddy of mine to use in our gaming clan forums.

Claude,

Just because they are raising the age limit, does not mean these people are less qualified.  It just broadens the pool of people from which to recruit.  Almost 90 percent of the people, whom I went to basic and AIT with, were under 29.  Almost all of those were able to keep up physically with the younger soldiers.

Many of us wanted to sign up after 9-11 but were told they were too old.  Now those people can join and help in the WOT.

The age limit has been raised because more men over 40 are seeking to enlist, which is a different set of requirments than for someone my age to re-enlist, for which I was denied on grounds of pre-exsisting medical in 2002. Search my usename here and you will find an explaination of the cyclical nature of recruiting.

I wonder what Jeff Spara has to say about today’s news.

WASHINGTON (Aug. 14) - Allegations of wrongdoing by U.S. military recruiters jumped by 50 percent from 2004 to 2005, and criminal violations such as sexual harassment and falsifying documents more than doubled, a congressional agency said on Monday.
