Are You Ready For Higher Gas Prices And Stagnant Economic Growth?

Because the Democrats are ready to deliver it.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Big oil companies will be a top target of Democratic lawmakers when they officially take over the House of Representatives early next year.

Democrats picked up enough seats in Tuesday’s U.S. election to win majority control of the House and have promised to roll back billions of dollars in tax breaks and other financial incentives extended to the oil industry in energy legislation Congress passed last year.

Democratic Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who is poised to be the next Speaker of the House when the new Congress convenes in January, says oil companies have unfairly earned record profits by gouging consumers at the gasoline pump.

Pelosi says taking away the financial relief given to Big Oil in last year’s Republican-written energy law will be among the six major tasks Democrats plan to tackle in the first 100 hours after she slams the gavel to convene the new House.

She says Democrats will also go after oil companies by enacting tough laws to stop gasoline price gouging, and some Democrats want to impose a windfall profits tax on Big Oil.

There is so much nonsense here.

First of all, there hasn’t been any price gouging on behalf of “big oil.” Yes, there have been enormous amounts of profits made, but the reasons for that are the high taxes and restrictive regulations people like Nancy Pelosi have placed on the oil industry.  See, demand for oil goes up every single year in this country.  That means supply must also go up every single year in order to meet that demand.  Unfortunately, increasing supply is no easy thing given tax burdens and regulations.  So the oil industry must raise gigantic amounts of capital so that they can reinvest said profits back into expanding production.

That is exactly what has been happening.  Over the last decade U.S. and Canadian oil companies have actually invested 50% more then they’ve taken in profits back into expanding oil production.  Of course, if expanding oil production weren’t so expensive thanks to environmental regulations and taxes gas prices wouldn’t be so high.

We must also consider what impacts these Democrat machinations are going to have on local economies.  Here in North Dakota we’ve enjoyed incredible amounts of economic growth thanks to the oil industry’s investment and development in the western part of our state.  If the Democrats hike taxes on the oil companies again, though, that investment and development may grind to a halt when it ceases to be profitable thanks to the higher taxes/increased regulations.

I know we’re all supposed to hate and revile “big oil” and do whatever we can to keep them from getting big profits, but the truth of the matter is that when American oil companies profit it benefits us all.  And not just people who hold stock in those oil companies either but also all the people who are employed by the oil companies and all the people who benefit from the economic stimulus caused when one of the oil companies invests in a certain area of the country.

Democrats talk long and hard about “ending our dependence on foreign oil,” yet the surest way to keep this country dependent on foreign oil is to hamstring our domestic oil companies with heavy taxes and burdensome regulations.  The Dems think they’re going to “solve” problems like high gas prices and dependence on foreign oil by sticking it to our oil companies, but the truth of the matter is that they’re just going to make things worse.

Gee Rob, now you go from “fear and smear” to “doom and gloom”.  The prez feels a bit liberated as he might get some of his plans to pass as long as the Dems think it is good for the nation.

So keep up with the doom and gloom, I for one am looking forward to the next few years, finally.

Go easy on rube, he just found out that his finger was not on the pulse of the American voters.

I think all this doom and gloom for Republicans is a bunch of media hype.  The GOP will lose some ground in Congress, I have no doubt about that (and they deserve it too), but I’d be shocked if Republicans lost a majority in either house.

The only question is what was Bunny’s finger really on?

Excuse me, you were saying?

Sorry, RBB, but we’ve been the brunt of being called idiots, traitors, tax and spenders, cut and runners, amongst other names, so it is just too bad that Rob et al, has to endure what they’ve wrought. The citizens spoke loud and clear and didn’t buy the crap they’ve been spewing for the past 6 years.

Yeah, it certainly wasn’t on the pulse of the citizens.  I’ve been on the road for the past 6 weeks and I could easily tell where the pulse was.  My estimates were way under as well but during the last two weeks on the road, the change coming was clearly palpable.

The republicans saw it coming too but chose to believe that their 72 hour machine could roll out their base.  But they understimated the independents going big time blue and even some of the Rs voting D.  Rob et al, just kept thinking that if they called us traitors and that if citizens voted democratic they were voting for the terrorists.  Citizens thought that was about as low as you could go.  They were indeed angry and their votes showed it.

They wanted their government to deal with their issues, like healthcare, the cost of higher education, minimum wage (passed in all 8 states).  The tax protesting TABOR bills were killed in every single state where it has been on the ballot, so Grover Norquist is a big big loser this election as is Rush and Hannity who couldn’t get their people fired up and now are feeling “liberated” from having to defend those “republicans”.  So much for their creibility.
Bunny needs to get quit reading the RNC talking points since Gumby Mehlman is so smug this morning and will be soon on his way out.  Watch the long knives come out in the R party, they’ve already started the fingerpointing and blame game.  The Club for Growth and the right wing got themselves a room at the Press Club yesterday to start their blame game while another conservative group was across the hall doing the same thing.

Rob just needs to calm down a bit and breathe.  The democrats are going to do a great job and may even be nice to the republicans to set the tone. They will be the “uniters not dividers”.  Oops we’re not going to be sloganeers either.

Puzzlefeet on November 9, 2006 at 06:19 am

Rob, don’t you understand?  If we take away tax incentives and then institute a windfall profits tax, we will make the cost of producing gasoline higher.  That way, the price at the pump will go down.

Man, you don’t know nothin’ about nothin’ about economics, do you?

Hey Puzzle, I’d just like to remind you once again that Democrats won this election by default.

This is no liberal mandate.

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.

Woof, that’s what’s good for the Whistler is good for everybody.

I hate it when you get it wrong.

[W]hat you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

The Republicans lost their way and paid the price.  That doesn’t mean that the Democrats aren’t still tax & spend, cut & run, and pro-amnesty.  I’m afraid that we may soon find out the the Dems are worse that they were the last time they were in power.  Next year may be time for GW to start using that veto.

The only legitimate role of government with regard to economics is to prevent fraud and provide a remedy- civil and criminal penalties- in case of fraud.

People have the mistaken notion that the free market has no rules.  But it most certainly does.  All our problems are due to government meddling.

I wonder where Chad is; he should be criticizing the Dems emotional and unscientific approach to energy policy.  Double standard?

This is clearly an emotional argument, devoid of any science or reason whatsoever.  Chad reveals his hypocrisy(and partisanship).

This is such an eternally frustrating issue to discuss with Democrats and liberals. My own father, a liberal, just doesn’t get it; he insisted a few months ago that oil companies were prices gouging. Oi!

I don’t understand how these people who have no clue about economics say the things they do and expect to be taken seriously. If Democrats really want to help America, they would keep cutting taxes and demand a balanced budget.

R108, that’s why it is so much fun to gloat today, since you can’t stand it.  You got thumped in the election.  The citizens of this country called you on what you did to this country and through you out of office.  So now you live with it!

Um, Puzzlefeet, how exactly can we claim that Democrats are going to be “nice” when the article Rob cites quotes Nancy Pelosi accusing oil companies of “price gouging”?  Perhaps nice in comparison to accusing them of killing puppies and putting them in infant onsies, or something like that, but not on any objective scale!  The cat’s out of the bag already; Democrats are no more likely to play “nice” than to admit that you cannot reduce prices by increasing costs.

And sad to say, apparently very few people in the media have passed econ 101, either, so getting people to understand basic facts of economics is going to be an uphill slog for the foreseeable future.

Robert Perry on November 9, 2006 at 02:44 pm

You got thumped in the election.

Wrong.  The Dem majority in Congress is the same as the former Republican majority in the House, and one-fifth as large as the former Republican majority in the Senate.  By your standards, then, we really “thumped” you in ‘04.  Your gloating simply reveals your leftie lack of character.

Hey R108, quit talking nasty about the prez, he’s the one who said the Rs took a thumping on Tuesday.  You lost, you took a thumping live with it.

Puzzlefeet on November 10, 2006 at 01:25 am

P: You apparently can’t understand the math: Dems=same majority in House, smaller majority in Senate than the Republicans had previously.  A victory, but not a large one, and definitely not a victory for America.  The terrorists and the UN love your victory, though.
