Are You Kidding Me? Julia Child Was An OSS Spy

I wonder if she snapped any necks with those man-hands of hers.

We might learn more today:

The full secret comes out Thursday, all of the names and previously classified files identifying nearly 24,000 spies who formed the first centralized intelligence effort by the United States. The National Archives, which this week released a list of the names found in the records, will make available for the first time all 750,000 pages identifying the vast spy network of military and civilian operatives.

Some of the other operatives named were already well-known to have worked for U.S. intelligence, such as Kermit Roosevelt, Moe Berg and Miles Copeland.

The list also includes Sterling Hayden. Heh, how could a guy like that not have worked for the OSS? No big surprise there.

But Julia Child . . . ? My esteem for her has gone up immensely. If this doesn't turn out to be some kind of prank, that is.

P.S. For me, this was like learning that Ray Rayner helped plan The Great Escape. Will wonders never cease?

Yeah, duh, I’ve known this about her for several years.  The woman was amazing.  She not only served in the OSS, she served in the fucking China Burma India Theatre, with all that humiditiy and malaria and funk.  She was married to a U.S. diplomat to France, who also happened to be one of her compatriots in the OSS.  and enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu because she hated sitting around doing nothing as a diplomat’s wife, and excelled despite the fact that the instructors resented her being an American and a woman, and ignored her.  She cooked for President Eisenhower, IIRC.  The woman kicked ass.

Next thing ya know your gonna tell us that some hot movie star chick and a piano player invented a way to manipulate radio frequencies between transmission and reception to develop an unbreakable code so that top-secret messages could not be intercepted and because of that we won the war.

Spies are very rarely the people you would expect them to be.

I read of Julia Child’s involvement with OSS some years ago, I’ll try to dig that book out of the stacks.

This information was put out by NPR in 2002.  Not to put down Julia Child or her work (public or secret), but aside from being married to a diplomat who was an active OSS operative, the extent of her activity was to help devise a shark repellant for mines.

RBB,

Come on, bob….you could have picked a better example than that. The only thing she was interested in was her own self-promotion. She’s a fluffy, disdainful creature and couldn’t wash dishes for someone like Child.

Her appeal was just denied, too, by the way. Loser.

Hayden is the CIA director, RBB.

Gee, I even blogged about it way back when.

You were saying, RBB?

Ken McCracken on August 14, 2008 at 11:41 am

“SEATED at the Washington Gridiron dinner March 31, I was interrupted by a man crouching at my feet who was dressed Air Force formal with the four stars of a full general. It was CIA Director Michael Hayden, who complained to me profanely that my column had misrepresented him in the Valerie Plame Wilson case. Denying he favors Democrats, Gen. Hayden indicated to me he had not authorized Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman to say Plame had been a “covert” CIA employee, as he claimed Hayden did, but only that she was “undercover.”

At the Gridiron, Hayden made similar points with Rep. Peter Hoekstra, the House Intelligence Committee’s ranking Republican; Republican lawyer Victoria Toensing, an expert in national-security law; and White House Counsel Fred Fielding. Yet, 10 days later, the CIA and its director asserted to me that the wife of Bush critic Joseph Wilson indeed had been “covert.” The designation could strengthen erroneous claims that she came under the Intelligence Identities Protection Act.

Nobody ever will be prosecuted under the act for revealing Mrs. Wilson worked for the CIA. But Hayden has raised GOP suspicions that he is angling to become intelligence czar - director of national intelligence - under a Democratic president. While Hayden proclaims himself free of politics, his handling of the Plame case is puzzling.”

Statement of Rep. Henry A. Waxman
Chairman, Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Hearing on Disclosure of CIA
Agent Valerie Plame Wilson’s Identity and White House Procedures for Safeguarding
Classified Information
March 16,2007

I have been advised by the CIA that even now, after all that has happened, I cannot disclose
the full nature, scope, and character of Ms. Wilson’s service to our nation without causing serious
damage to our national security interests.

But General Hayden and the CIA have cleared these following comments for today’s hearing.

During her employment at the CIA, Ms. Wilson was under cover.

Her employment status with the CIA was classified information prohibited fiom disclosure under Executive Order 12958.

At the time of the publication of Robert Novak’s column on July 14,2003, Ms. Wilson’s CIA employment status was covert.

This was classified information.

Ms. Wilson served in senior management positions at the CIA, in which she oversaw the work of other CIA employees, and she attained the level of GS-14, step 6 under the federal pay scale.

Ms. Wilson worked on some of the most sensitive and highly secretive matters handled by the CIA.

Ms. Wilson served at various times overseas for the CIA.

Without discussing the specifics of Ms. Wilson’s classified work, it is accurate to say that she worked on the prevention of the development and use of weapons of mass destruction against the United States.

In her various positions at the CIA, Ms. Wilson faced significant risks to her personal safety and her life.

She took on serious risks on behalf of her country.
Ms. Wilson’s work in many situations had consequences for the security of her colleagues, and maintaining her cover was critical to protecting the safety of both colleagues and others.

The disclosure of Ms. Wilson’s employment with the CIA had several serious effects.

First, it terminated her covert job opportunities with CIA.
Second, it placed her professional contacts at greater risk.
And third, it undermined the trust and confidence with which future CIA employees and sources hold the United States.

This disclosure of Ms. Wilson’s classified employment status with the CIA was so detrimental that the CIA filed a crimes report with the Department of Justice.

As I mentioned, Ms. Wilson’s work was so sensitive that even now, she is still prohibited from discussing many details of her work in public because of the continuing risk to CIA officials and assets in the field and to the CIA’S ongoing work.

Some have suggested that Ms. Wilson did not have a sensitive position with the CIA or a position of unusual risk.

As a CIA employee, Ms. Wilson has taken a life-long oath to protect classified information, even after her CIA employment has ended.

As a result, she cannot respond to most of the statements made about her.

I want to make clear, however, that any characterization that minimizes the personal risk Ms. Wilson accepted in her assignments is flatly wrong.

There should be no confusion on this point.

Ms. Wilson has provided great service to our nation and has fulfilled her obligation to protect classified information admirably.

We are confident that she will uphold it again today.

That concludes the characterizations that the CIA is permitting us to make today.

CIA fact:

At the time of the publication of Robert Novak’s column on July 14, 2003, Ms. Wilson’s CIA employment status was covert.

From the dismissal:

Because the Wilsons have failed to state constitutional … claims for which relief may be granted and failed to exhaust their administrative remedies as required … we affirm the judgment of the district court dismissing the Wilsons’ amended complaint in its entirety,” the court said.

Ken,
please pay no attention to RBB.
You see, sometimes old people have this condition called Alzheimer’s Disease.
Symptoms of this debilitating and invariably fatal illness include but are not limited to: loss of short term memory, belligerence, speaking in non sequiturs, inability to conform to social mores, an inclination to wander aimlessly, and a severe propensity to live in the past.
Such people are, sadly, prisoners of their own minds, and there is very little that can be done for them other than to make them comfortable in their declining days as they slowly wind down and stop.
