Are The Editors Of Vogue Racist?

Some say they are given this cover featuring LeBron James and Gisele Bundchen:

Why the accusations of racism?  Because the pose depicted above looks remarkably like one struck by King Kong and Ann Darrow in the original 1933 movie:

My reaction?  There’s a resemblance, and it might have even been on purpose, but ultimately I think people have entirely too much time on their hands.

This isn’t even worthy of this blog. But since it is on the blog, here I go. Like you said some people have too much time on their hands. Maybe we ought to send them to New Orleans’ 9th Ward. LeBron James has always played the mighty “Kong” against his opponents. Flexing and screaming.
I’m the baddest MF in the valley type of stuff. And I am sure he has no regrets about the cover. I am sure there are so WASPs who might not like it. But racist!? No way.

Now why would Vogue go and make fun of King Kong like that?

How insensitive.

There’s no comparison! James is a small forward, Kong was a center!

A troll is someone who only wants to stir up trouble, not have an honest debate.  Some signs that a poster is a troll:
* Dodges questions from other posters * Refuses to give sources
* When one of its arguments is shown to be false, either ignores the proof or moves the goalposts.  Heh. (From the LGF faq)

Graves, quit calling me names. I may be forced to change my avatar.

McCracken: Give my sincere apologies to the monkey.

Well he happens to be a good friend of mine and a great center, so yes I will try to calm him down.

I’ll call for the biplanes if things get ugly.

That is a GREAT picture of Ms. Bundchen.  If anyone thinks that a woman cannot be wonderfully attractive without showing most of her “nasty bits” to the camera, this picture should be required viewing.

Not so much Mr. James, IMO, with the exception of the fact that he is exhibiting a masculinity that is all too often missing these days in men--shame on the PC crowd for confusing an unbridled masculinity for bigotry.

King Kong died for our sins.

Looks like a basketball player being basketbally, and a model being pretty.

What’s racist is the idea that Lebron can’t decide for himself what he considers dignified, whether the movie poster similarity (and a slim similarity at that)is intentional or not.

Seth Williams on April 2, 2008 at 06:29 pm

Another thought here; let’s assume that this is LeBron as Kong.  Those who actually have seen and understood the movies would remember that Kong is a tragic character, sympathetic in its nature, representing manhood truncated by brutal acts for money.  So even if we assume the premise, I don’t arrive at the conclusion.

Of course, government school grads might have trouble figuring this out from the movie, even though the point is made about as subtly as, say, a five foot fist of a giant ape.
