AP Does Nice Press Release For Keith Olbermann

Hmm…

image

So Olbermann targets Bush, eh?  What a shocker.

Seriously, that headline may as well read “Ted Kennedy Is A Liberal” or “Michael Moore Has A Weight Problem.”

Honestly, why is Olbermann getting this kind of attention?  We certainly don’t see headlines like “Rush Limbaugh Thinks Democrats Are Wrong” or “Sean Hannity Dislikes Hillary Clinton.” And it’s not like Olbermann is setting any viewership records.  I mean, the guy’s show was recently outrated in primetime by a gameshow rerun.

The dude is an irrelevant clown who almost nobody watches, but I guess he’s saying the sort of things mainstream news reporters only wish they could say so they’ll give him a bunch free publicity.  Rush Limbaugh has something like 30 million daily listeners and he can’t get in the headlines unless customs agents find some Viagra in his luggage, but Olbermann goes nutso on Bush daily and calls Fox News Roger Ailes a “fat ass” and suddenly he’s the second coming of Walter Cronkite or something.

Wait a minute! I thought it was “Ted Kennedy Has A Weight Problem” and “Michael Moore Is A Liberal.”

I always get things wrong…

Notice too that the writer said that Olbermann delivered a ‘blistering retort’.

The only way that guy can deliver a blistering retort is if he lit the hair gel on his pompadour on fire.

Why do you guys care what Olbermann is doing?  You should be busy defending the reckless acts of Foley in your party.
I am a conservative who is fed up with absolute power.  And the problem is that you guys speak as though you have logic about every issue.  You do not.
You continue to rant and rave about how bad America is.  The Republican party has made it that way.  The Republican Party used to be good- Now it is full of scandals, bad ideas, and corruption.
Do not worry.  Republicans will not lose next month because a stupid sex-scandal is sweeping through the party.  They will lose because of the economy.  And before you respond with twenty right-leaning stats on how great our economy currently is, let me remind you that what is good for Wall Street is not necessarily good for the average family in North Dakota.  How the hell does a 30k per year family in ND without investments supposed to benefit in today’s America?
I guess those people do not matter, even if they are the majority, and always have been.  I have plenty of relatives and friends who still farm in ND.  They told me they really got screwed this year.  I suppose they should all shut down because a few whack-jobs belive disaster aid and farm subsidies are a bad idea.
Go ahead.  Take away farm subsidies.  Then, fast forward ten years from now and explain to 300 million people why they should pay ten bucks for a loaf of bread or starve to death.  Sound like a great idea.

Let’s see, no one is watching:

Oct. 4 (money demo 25-54)
Billo - 461
K.O. - 259
Zahn - 203
Grace - 165

Oct. 3 (Olbermann was on Letterman)

Oct. 2 (money demo 25-54)
Billo - 389
K.O. - 333
Zahn - 267
Grace - 206

Oct. 2 (total audience)
Billo - 1,990
K.O. - 834
Zahn - 736
Grace - 544

Every media outlet has been guilty of publishing “puff” pieces (NY Times w/K.O. earlier this year), especially regarding television personalities.  This AP story (writen by a television beat reporter) is no different.

The above numbers speak for themselves.  Billo IS losing his audience.  The commentaries (in terms of ‘strategery’wink are working.  They are building momentum for the program as a whole and they are doing their part journalistically.  By that I mean, Olbermann, the journalist, is asking and getting answers to questions in regards to the current administration.  You don’t like it because it is your ‘boy’ that is being questioned.

Government, Democrat or Republican, does not get a pass… ever!  Olbermann did not give Clinton a pass in 97/98 and he is not giving Bush (and administration) a pass during this second term.

Say what you will, but domestic spying programs, secret government prisons, and the abolition of habeus corpus are MASSIVE government doings that MUST be questioned.  It is the role of the press (the fourth estate) to be a check on all three branches of the government.  I think, Olbermann is simply living up to that role, unlike many of the yellow bellied journalists that exist today.

Dave Miller on October 8, 2006 at 05:09 pm

I see the KO and/or MSNBC is calling in some major favors to get KO’s chronically last-place numbers up to snuff.

I await the AP’s article on the nuances and finer points of Tucker Carlson’s program.

They don’t know enough about real conservatism to talk the talk, so they end up sounding like a weird parody of conservatives from Democratic Undergound.

Actually, I am from Bismarck.

Moving on, I just wanted to say that I am sorry to bring logic and truth to this arena.  I am sure it is quite a shock.

I am shocked that the same group of people can constantly defend the corrupt and inexcusable actions of the GOP.  I am guessing that you are the same group that defended Clinton.

Maybe it is because you are under-educated, and ill-informed.  Maybe it is because the only knowledge you acquired came in the form of antequated GOP slogans your parents passed down to you.  Maybe it is the fact that many of you have never lived or visited any place that doesn’t begin with North and end in Dakota.
Maybe it is ego.  Maybe it is sickness.

I am guessing it is a healthy dose of all these things.

And by the way Whistler, Rob’s post is questioning the individual performance of Olbermann and not necessarily the network’s.  Thanks for pointing out the obvious that MSNBC is third behind CNN and Fox News.

Dave did you look at those numbers.  I can’t see how you’d get an average of only 368,000 with the data on your link.

These two reports of MSNBC’s ratings don’t seem to gel.

The article I found was for the 3rd quarter.  Yours were for a very short time.

Now I’d bet that lefties were very interested in the news last week to get the Foley news.  Just a guess.

Most anyone (especially advertisers) are going to be looking at dailies.  Why?  Because they are able to compare the numbers to the flux of the issues.  Foleygate be go without saying for the increase in Olbermann’s numbers, but what explains the decrease in Billo’s numbers?

Since making his first ‘special comment’ in September, Olbermann has been in second most nights.  On average (if I remember right) the numbers for Fox News have been off.  Why aren’t the conservitives going to their conservative blow horn to hear about Foleygate?  Is it because he’s not talking about it?  Is it because Billo is starting to turn his program into “Inside Edition” after saying he thought it was silly to cover celebrity news?

Dave Miller on October 8, 2006 at 05:57 pm

Dave:  I hate to tell you Bill Orielly is no conservative.

In my opinion Fox would be better off not to attract liberal viewers as they a) aren’t going to get them and b) they turn off some of the right.  Still that’s my opinion.

Better yet present both sides, but drop the “political analysts” doing commentary unless it’s actually germane.

I really doubt that advertisers are going to look at October 4th and make a purchase on that one days numbers.

No, but, they may look at Oct. 4, Sept. 28 or whatever days Olbermann did his special comments.  They will also look at the days after he did his special comments to see how much of the audience remained and how much new audience the show attracted.  The 3Q numbers will be interesting to look at in comparison to the 2Q and 1Q to see the overall impact of the commentaries.  I would think, any television observer would be hard pressed to say they haven’t had any effect at all.

Dave, maybe he’s on to something and maybe he’s not.  Time will tell.

As I said in a comment above, there is a large potential “moonbat” audience that likely will be loyal.  However Air America didn’t reach them and as yet Olbermann hasn’t either.

I see all of MSNBC did well last week, not just KO.

You jumped in to take on the characterization that KO has not been successful.  He’s had his show for a while and he’s not been successful.  Like I started with, maybe he’ll be successful and maybe he won’t be.

If he is successful it won’t hurt the conservative cause as he’ll be preaching to the choir.  (Much like Rush does)

Whistler, you might be right with the speaking to the choir, but in terms of success, whose definition of success?  In the cable television market MSNBC may be last most of the time, but as we saw recently, MSNBC.com won two awards for best news website.  Relevance in the television ratings can be questioned daily as I pointed out above.  Longevity says something to.  K.O. has had a rather consistant audience and now that audience seems to be growing, slowly, but growing.

As I have said on my blog concerning this issue with Keith Olbermann and his comments… either this is the liberal Olbermann coming out and he’s using ‘his’ show to defend ‘his’ liberal ideals, or he is using ‘his’ show to bring back an old form of journalism which Edward R. Murrow perfected during the McCarthy hearings.  If Olbermann ends his comments when the Democrats, sorry, if the dems win a majority in Congress next month, then something could be said about the comments solely being partisan attacks.  But, I’ve talked to two political science professors and a first amendment law professor in the last week and all of them said that he may be on to something in terms of how the Bush administration is taking great liberty with the Constitution.  Like you said, time will tell.  I hope for journalism’s sake, Olbermann is picking a fight, not because it’s republicans and Bush, but because of the offenses those in governmental power are committing.

Poor Dave Miller, people disagree with him so he doesn’t post on this blog anymore...boo hooo hooo.

I really am intrigued by the people who prop Olbermann up and talk about his audience and how it is growing, and that Fox News is losing its audience.  Olbermann’s number are really stagnant, they go up and down from time to time but are staying very consistent.  Oh, i’m sorry, an increase of 25,000 viewers over a year I guess would be an increase, ok, you win.

I’m also loving this argument that he is like Murrow, excuse me while I throw up now.

It is hard to take him or his program seriously when he talks about Paris Hilton and Anna Nicole one segment and than tells the ten people watching how Bush is the Devil.

I understand how difficult it must be for you (Johnny) to pay attention to more than one topic in an hour.  God forbid a broadcaster mix up his newscast with a little light information to break up the heavy stuff… cuz Rushbo never does that?

I mean, for all your supposedly libertarian ideals, you sure jumped on the liberal bandwagon with Keith Olbermann.  Like I’ve said before, you’re just as partisan as everyone else here.

Anyone who says anything negative about Olbermann gets your panties in a bunch.

Your argument that he was tough on Clinton is a joke.  He was/is not tough on Democrats or liberals, but since he didn’t like Clinton getting a bj in the oval office and than lying and misleading the public about it, that makes him tough on Clinton, therefore he is non-partisan, objective, and fair.

Just because people disagree and engage in partisan bickering, does not make them 7th graders.  You are just as guilty of this as everyone else.

His anti-semitic rants have gone ignored by the mainstream media and that is a shame and an insult and should not be tolerated.
