Another Day Of Emphasized Negativity On Iraq From The Media
I’ve been seeing this story all over the internet (as well as hearing it on the radio all day):
PENTAGON (AP) The Pentagon says sectarian violence in Iraq is getting worse and feeding the risk of civil war.
In its latest report to Congress, the Defense Department says security problems are more complex now than at any time since Saddam Hussein toppled from power.
But you know which current story I haven’t heard a lot about out of Iraq? This one:

Now most of the time when the media is charged with being overly negative in their reporting on Iraq journalists counter by saying something along the lines of “plane crashes are news, not successful take offs.” Meaning that people aren’t interested in hearing about hospitals being built and schools being re-opened; they’re interested in the violence.
But I’m not sure that defense works in this instance. The media, collectively, is reporting about what is (according to them) Iraq’s descent into civil war. They’re talking about increased violence, etc. So wouldn’t it be important, then, to point out that the month we just got through had a death toll that is a fraction of the month before it?
I mean, if what is being reported is “Risk of civil war up” isn’t the amount of deaths caused by violence important? Don’t you think that citizens might feel a little differently if they knew all the facts on this story?
Apparently not, which just shows us all yet again how Americans just aren’t getting the full picture out of Iraq. Tags: War On Terror
