Another Democrat Comes Out In Favor Of Banning Chick-fil-A

Last week I wrote about Massachusetts Democrats, including the mayor of Boston and one of the state’s members of Congress, saying that they would oppose Chick-fil-A building any restaurants in their state/city because of the company’s long-time stance on gay marriage and homosexuality in general.
Now another Democrat, a Chicago alderman, has joined the chorus opposing the company saying he’s against them building in his area:
Ald.Proco “Joe” Moreno announced this week that he will block Chick-fil-A’s effort to build its second Chicago store, which would be in the Logan Square neighborhood, following company President Dan Cathy’s remarks last week that he was “guilty as charged” for supporting the biblical definition of marriage as between a man and woman.
“If you are discriminating against a segment of the community, I don’t want you in the 1st Ward,” Moreno told the Tribune on Tuesday.
I don’t agree with Chick-fil-A’s position on homosexuality and gay marriage, but it’s more than a bit obnoxious for a politician to say that he’s going to fight discrimination by discriminating against a business which takes a social view he disagrees with.
What’s next? Opposing Jewish delis because of their position on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict? This tolerance stuff works both ways, you know.
If you don’t like Chick-fil-A’s stance on social issues, or any other issue for that matter, then don’t buy the company’s food. But we should all be against the government making decisions about which businesses get to exist and which don’t based on their political or social views.
Update: Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is also against Chick-fil-A moving into Chicago.
