Anderson Cooper Wants You To Know That It’s Nobody’s Business That He’s Gay
Apparently, Anderson Cooper is gay. That “news story” is making headlines this slow-news holiday week. And we’re supposed to care or something. Except that Cooper also says that it’s “nobody’s business” that he’s gay.
Which makes me wonder, if it’s nobody’s business, why the announcement? Here’s his statement sent to Andrew Sullivan in an email:
“The fact is, I’m gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud.
I have always been very open and honest about this part of my life with my friends, my family, and my colleagues. In a perfect world, I don’t think it’s anyone else’s business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted. I’m not an activist, but I am a human being and I don’t give that up by being a journalist.”
According to Sullivan, “The visibility of gay people is one of the core means for our equality.” I don’t necessarily disagree, but beyond people being able to say they’re gay without being targeted with hateful campaigns of bigotry, I think the larger solution is to simply stop caring who people sleep with.
One of the problems with race relations is that we’re all so preoccupied with race. Stop caring what color people are, stop caring what consenting adults do with one another in their free time, and we’ll be a better society for it.
