An Honest Voter?

The Grand Forks Herald:

Sherry Zeman donated $100 to the [East Grand Forks Minnesota School] district Thursday and is challenging others to do the same.

A district referendum that failed by 23 votes Tuesday would have collected $108 in property taxes per $100,000 in home value. The district stood to get $1.25 million to help maintain services, with 40 percent from local taxes and 60 percent from the state.

Aanenson and two organizers of a group in support of the referendum, Gary Jones and Rebecca Gottberg, each said they plan to match Zeman’s donation.

1,629 people voted to raise property taxes in East Grand Forks.  I’m sure nobody would vote to raise taxes on everyone if they weren’t willing to pay that amount regardless, right:

Today’s Grand Forks Herald:

Since that donation, the board has received more checks. A total of 14 checks totaling about $2,100 were sent.

Wow, where are the other 1,614 people who voted for it.  Why is it that liberals are willing to FORCE other people to do what they won’t do voluntarily?

It’s the same thing with Universal Health Coverage.  There are probably 100 million people that want the government to provide Health Care to everyone.  That many people could make a serious dent in the uninsured population if they banded together and formed a charity.  But they don’t.  Why because they want the government to force SOMEONE ELSE to pay for their good deeds.

The thing is why does the school immediately turn to taxes for new revenue.  Why don’t they try and raise the money first?

The problem is caused by declining enrollments. They then get less money from the state.

of course with fewer students they should be cutting back, but it’s too hard for them to make sacrifices so they ask the taxpayers to do so.

Of course when enrollments climb they need more money and when enrollments decrease they need more money.

I’m starting to see a pattern here.

[W]hat you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Joe,

Because that’s what they have always done.  As a wise man once said, the greatest force in the universe in inertia.

I remember recently hearing how a school district raised a bunch of money by going to the alumni and community for donations to build various things mainly an new gymnasium.  We need more of that.  I would gladly give 50 or 100 bucks to something like that if it was necessary.  If I had more money I would give more.

I remember something like this back in around 99 or 2000 here in MN.  The state had a big surplus and they wanted to spend it on a new baseball stadium.  Then Governor Ventura gave tax rebates instead and told anyone that wanted a stadium that they could sign over their rebate checks to a fund for the stadium.

I think they got 4 checks.

A few years back, the Dems in our state were screaming for higher taxes.  The Republican governor held a press conference and announced the formation of a new bank account.  He said that anyone who felt like they were not paying enough in taxes cold write a check to the new account and he would be happy to take it.

I believe the account made it to well over $1000.

I’m sure that made them all happy to have a $1000 to spend.
