An Armed Society is a Good Thing

The Miami Herald:

TALLAHASSEE - Florida's crime rate dropped for the 14th straight year in 2005 to its lowest mark since 1971 because of tougher laws, increased financial support from the Legislature and law-abiding citizens with guns, Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday.

''This report shows that staying tough on crime works,'' Bush said. ``Law abiding citizens that have guns for protection actually probably are part of the reason we have a lower crime rate.''

Meanwhile in Washington DC it is impossible to get a gun to protect yourself in your home let alone carry it on the streets.

The AP:

Nation's Capital Declares Crime Emergency

Two groups of tourists were robbed at gunpoint on the National Mall, just hours after the police chief declared a crime emergency in the city in response to a string of violence that included the killing of a British activist.

The activist, Alan Senitt, was attacked in the Georgetown area on Sunday, his throat was slit and police say the attackers attempted to rape his companion. It was the 13th homicide in the city this month. Robberies are up 14 percent, and armed assaults have jumped 18 percent in the past 30 days.

On Wednesday, U.S. Park Police were looking for connections between the latest Mall robberies and three similar incidents in the area in late May. There have been no arrests in any of those cases.

On Tuesday night, two women from Texas were robbed at gunpoint by two men dressed in all black, said U.S. Park Police Sgt. Scott Fear. About 15 minutes later, a family of four from Missouri was robbed by suspects with the same description, he said.

Gun Control makes victims out of people that could defend themselves.

Concealed carry laws have worked every time it's been tried.

But still liberals refuse to accept reality.

My 72 year old mother carries a pistol in Alabama. When she comes up to Illinois for a visit we have to remind her to unload and put it in the glovebox or leave it at the house. Paw carries one also, they even got senior discounts on the concealed carry permits.

Great, not only can’t they drive, they probably can’t shoot.

Just Kidding!

Good for them.  I didn’t know that you could carry a gun in the glovebox in Illinois.  Course I never go there.  Packing.org has a lot of good carrying information.

The article I read about Florida went on to note that, while overall crime was down, violent crime was actually UP.  Fairly important point, in my estimation.

Well, only fairly important...until we find out what types of violent crime went up or down.

Were there more shootings or armed robberies or simply more domestic violence and bar fights?

The number of violent crimes in 2005 increased statewide by 1.7 percent although the rate dropped 0.6 percent and nonviolent crime decreased by 4.2 percent. Violent crimes are murder, forcible sex offenses, robbery and aggravated assault.

Reports of domestic violence were up slightly and those incidents accounted for more than a fourth of the reported violent crimes and one-fifth of all murders, according to FDLE.

So the violent crime rate is down so they must have more people.

I’m not quite sure that the pistol is legal in Illinois in the glovebox.  I’d tend to lock it in the trunk before exiting enlightened states like Indiana and Kentucky unless I was willing to risk arrest for carrying a gun there.

One thing that should be noted about Florida as well is that they were among the first of states to start issuing carry permits.  Hence, we’d expect that they’d have a lower overall rate of crime than other states, but not that they’d have a year by year decrease in crime.

In other words, Florida is doing some special things to get crime down, maybe putting NRA stickers on rental cars so German tourists don’t get shot.  J/K on that, of course, but good for Florida.

hvywgt,

That’s one of the funniest lines I seen in a long, long time.  And I’ll remember to thank you as soon as I wipe up the coffee I spit out when I read it.

Whistler, any idea how much crime was committed by illegals?

The article certainly doesn’t have that.  I was looking at the FBI site just now and didn’t see any references.  That’s another thing to look into.

(The reason why I was looking was a future post on crime rates by state.  Any guesses on what state has the lowest crime rate?) that’s a teaser.

I should have said unload, case and lock in the glovebox. In Illinois you’d be safer from the law if it was locked in the trunk, but the folk’s don’t have one in their pickup.

BatOne, Bounty the quicker… nevermind. No joke though, 50% off.  Saved them 10 bucks each.

Shall issue should be the law of the land. I seem to recall something in the Constitution about that.

Hah! I find the broke stoner look works as a deterrent. Of course, then I get the cops harassing me…

I go for the natural look, whitetrash with money. And don’t forget the attitude. That alone, properly applied, will take you far.
