An American Carol- A Movie Review

Inspired by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, where the miser Scrooge is taught the true meaning of Christmas by the visitation of three spirits, David Zucker of “Airplane!” and Naked Gun movie fame, takes on the story of left wing filmmaker Michael Malone, a Michael Moore lookalike, who wants to abolish the Fourth of July.
Those familiar with Dickens’ tale will recognize that Malone’s nephew also stands in for Bob Cratchit in Zucker’s adaptation. Tiny Tim is there with a vengeance! As you might expect from a David Zucker movie, there are quite a few laugh out loud moments and I don’t want to give any of them away. There is a bit with a pizza box that was pretty memorable!
But, there’s also a serious thread that runs through the movie…that of patriotism and love of country. The movie runs from extreme silliness to extreme seriousness and back again. There’s classic slapstick comedy and heart tugging poignancy.
There is some mild vulgarity, not enough to bother any but the most prudish among us…and they probably shouldn’t be watching movies anyway!
There is no nudity, but plenty of thought provoking material. It’s got an all star cast. The acting is top notch and cameos abound! Voight and Grammer are particularly good as Washington and Patton.
I recommend An American Carol. It’s entertaining, funny and thought provoking. Conservatives will like it better than liberals, I think, but enough of the humor will surprise and ring true enough to elicit laughs from all but the Scroogiest libs!
All in all, I’d give it four out of five stars.

I liked it even though the genre is not my favorite. I would also add Robert Davi to the list of particularily good performance.

I am impressed with Zucker, he wasn’t intimidated by political-correctness and did not self-censor the project.

It felt different to watch a pro-America movie in today’s current atmosphere, it felt like I was watching something produced by an underground, anti-Hollywood Establishment counter-culture.

Zucker brought out the reality that Hollywood Establishment has no idea that it is The Establishment; this is why directors such as Oliver Stone making a movie such as “W” is ridiculous since Hollywood is the Establishment and directors like Stone are The Man.

I saw the movie last night. Took the girlfriend out for homecoming, and I had a few thoughts.

1.Kelsey Grammar as Gen. George S. Patton was the shit!
2.What was with the gratuitous Trace Adkins cameo? He’s a rather poor actor, his lines were stiff (in writing and delivery), and gratuitous musical numbers like “This is the greatest country in the whole-wide-world” really don’t do much to make it sound anything like reverse propaganda.

I mean, it had it’s moments, but in the same vein as the Half-Hour News Hour, it was a comedy squarely on the defensive, and thus, came across as very… well… defensive. It felt like they had to cover every “evil liberal” base in the movie, and that sort of thing bothers me, because it borders on propaganda.

Not that Hollywood is turning out anything less biased than American Carol, mind you, but I expected much more.

We are going today, being greedy, bitter, clingy conservatives, we are going to the matinee.

Ed, I think that was kind of the point. Heard an interview with Trace and the radio guy asked much the same question. Trace said that is how they wanted it to come off, less Lawrence Olivia, more Groucho Marx.

As for covering every base, you have watched the Airplane and Naked Gun movies, right? Not a single iconic cliche in our culture was missed in those movies. That is kinda Zucker’s thing, almost a fetish, you might say.

Missed our window. About an hour before we left my neighbor had a tree split off and fall on his house. Spent most of the afternoon clearing it and covering the gaping hole in the roof. We’ll go tomorrow or Wednesday.

I really would have liked to see more of General Washington. Jon Voight was so good, I’d like to see him play Washington again.
