Americans: The Government Is Too Intrusive

This doesn’t surprise me…

A quarter century after the Reagan revolution and a dozen years after Republicans vaulted into control of Congress, a new CNN poll finds most Americans still agree with the bedrock conservative premise that, as the Gipper put it, “government is not the answer to our problems—government is the problem.”

The poll released Friday also showed that an overwhelming majority of Americans perceive, correctly, that the size and cost of government have gone up in the past four years, when Republicans have had a grip on the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House.

I’ve made this case before, that the Republicans, especially those in the Senate, have strayed so far from the conservative agenda that got most of them elected, that they’re starting to act like most Democrats do.  Because of this, in order for the left to attack, they have to attack them from the right.  Democrats cannot hit Republicans from the left because that will not get many people elected… but if they hit Republicans from the right, they can be successful.

Now, the media is attempting to make Republicans out to be the intrusive party.  I can’t say that I disagree that the Republicans have become too intrusive in our lives, while completely ignoring states’ rights, but I certainly understand that the Democrats are for a far far far bigger and more intrusive government.

America is a conservative country.  That doesn’t mean it’s a Republican country… but it’s conservative.  One doesn’t have to look further than overwhelming support for the border fence or tax cuts.  If you need more evidence…

Queried about their views on the role of government, 54 percent of the 1,013 adults polled said they thought it was trying to do too many things that should be left to individuals and businesses. Only 37 percent said they thought the government should do more to solve the country’s problems.

Republicans should cut taxes furhter… shut down illegal immigration… open up markets… produce our own energy (oil and alternative)… enact tougher laws against sex offenders… reform social security… reform medicare… reform the tax code.  Don’t you guys see?  Americans will reward you for staying out of their lives.

Comments

You can’t outspend Democrats and they won’t thank you for trying.

Make your case for conservative principles and stick to them.

The press might make a lot of noice but who gives a hay what they say?

Dick Armey (my type of poletician) puts it rather well in this editorial on the Washington Post:

Where We Went Wrong

Somewhere along the road to a “permanent majority,” the Republican Revolution of 1994 went off track

..

The likely Republican losses in next week’s elections will not constitute a repudiation of the conservative legacy that drove the Reagan presidency and created the Contract With America. To the contrary, it would represent a rejection of big government conservatism. When we get back to being the party of limited government, putting a national agenda ahead of parochial short-term politics, we will again be a party that the American voters will trust to deal with the serious challenges facing our nation.

..
The 2006 midterm elections will be a success for the Democrats. ... the plain fact is that Republicans have been setting the stage for this outcome for nearly a decade, running from themselves and their own principles. We will not find ourselves by conforming to the status quo, but by returning to our Reagan roots.
..
When we act like us we win. When we act like them we lose. Let’s win.

This poll should be a good thing for Republicans- if they act on the information and change their ways.

My two favorites quotes on this:

“The mystery of government is not how Washington works but how to make it stop.” - P.J. O’Rourke

“The welfare state is the oldest con game in the world. First you take the people’s money quietly and then you give some of it back to them flamboyantly.” - Thomas Sowell

"Although I can accept talking scarecrows, lions and great wizards in emerald cities, I find it hard to believe there is no paperwork involved when your house lands on a witch.”
- Dave James
