Americans Feeling The Strain Of Economic Slowdown As Retail Sailes Grew Faster Than Expected

The cognitive dissonance is so in-your-face that you’d swear this is satire.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - While U.S. consumers may have spent slightly more than expected last month, it was because they paid more for necessities like gasoline and food, and not because they bought more discretionary items, analysts said on Monday.

The Commerce Department said U.S. retail sales were up 0.2 percent in March, slightly stronger than expected.

You know what you call an economy that continues to grow at higher-than-expected rates in the face of rising prices?  Resilient.

You know what will kill our economy, though?  Raising taxes and/or letting the Bush tax cuts expire (also a massive tax hike).

Comments

Another factor is hearing constant propaganda about how we’re actually in a recession, even though we have yet to have even one month of negative growth.

If you don’t know by now, don’t mess with it.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - While U.S. consumers may have spent slightly more than expected last month, it was because they paid more for necessities like gasoline and food, and not because they bought more discretionary items, analysts said on Monday.

The Commerce Department said U.S. retail sales w
ere up 0.2 percent in March, slightly stronger than expected.

But Americans are not shopping the way they used to, according to Bespoke Investment Group, a research firm in Harrison, N.Y.

They’re digging deeper into their wallets for the bare necessities like gasoline, food and beverages, the sectors showing the most growth in retail sales, it said. That trend has been building over the last several months,

Unfortunately, growth in these sectors is primarily due to inflation in food and energy prices,” Bespoke’s Paul Hickey and Justin Walters said.
The sectors selling discretionary items, like motor vehicles, building materials, general merchandise and clothing, showed the largest contraction of total share, they said.

Prices are surging at a time when U.S. home prices continue to fall and the labor market shows signs of softening.

As if by magic, we then get another dose of negative leftie propaganda from the Master Baiter, thus affirming what I previously commented on.

The economy grew, MB!

Lefties lie; it’s all they have.
What’s bad for America is good for the lefties.
Lefties rejoice when they can spin anything as bad for America.

hearing constant propaganda

Yeah r-Gumby, tell you boy to shut up already.
We aren’t in a recession yet.
He should be talking about bomb bomb bomb Iran.

But there’s old Johnnie, having yet another senior moment, saying we are.

As usual, you are behind the curve, Master Baiter:

I know it’s tough for reality-challenged lefties to understand, but a lie is a lie, no matter who tells it.
We are not in a recession.  Fact.

There you go again r-Gumby spreading your hate filled rightie lies.

I saw this story earlier this morning and didn’t think much of it, because he has been telling lies all month now. Is there an over/under on the time before he flip flops again and says that we are doing great and we’re not in a recession?

I did see that a FCC suit was brought up against your candidate though.

Only a mean spirited Republican would post such things. Just more talking points to talk down tax raises…

Why do you hate the children Rob?

Not my candidate, Master Baiter; that was the point of my post: He’s just like a Dem, which is why he’s lying all the time.

r-Gumby, are you saying that you are not voting for the gop?

Since March was much cooler than last year having retail sales up is quit remarkable.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Can you read English, Master Baiter? I said what I said.  Has your leftie KoolAid so warped your brain, along with your steady diet of leftie lies, that you can’t unravel a simple sentence?
I pity you.

robert108 on April 14, 2008 at 03:18 pm

r-Gumby, are you to thick to understand a simple question?

Most of the fine gentleman and women here have expressed their feelings that old Johnnie is not their candidate but will be voting for him anyway. In that light, my question was more than a fair one.

So r-Gumby, I will ask a question even you should be able to answer.

r-Gumby, on election day November 4th 2008, for whom will you cast your vote in the U.S. presidential general election? (For sake of this question, let’s stipulate the Senator Clinton is the Democratic nominee)

robert108:  Man, you really love the ‘liar’, ‘lying’ line of response. I keep trying to admire much of your better stuff, and you keep doing this crap.

It is possible to disagree - even strongly disagree - with someone without them being a ‘lefty’, ‘leftard’, lying liar. Why do you do that?
It is not one of your finer moments.

I don’t know about the entire country, but “my” economy is currently in a recession.

Perhaps a stipulation that you are eligible to vote in U.S. elections should also be made.

For all of Obama’s problems lately, I don’t see this happening.

Ken McCracken on April 14, 2008 at 04:21 pm

Brad, that’s too bad, however before you vote you need to consider whether an overactive government caused the problem and whether a politicians agenda will actually help things.

Whistler:  The problem can pretty much be traced to an ‘overactive’ Wall Street and the disastrous rise in the cost of petroleum, neither of which our government has any control over.

Wall Street?  It’s not the stock market, it’s the mortgage market which the government has in fact messed all the way up.

And surely you’re not going to try to claim that the US government has done nothing to stand in the way of develop domestic sources of petroleum.

More supply means “lower prices.”

Assuming you know the definition of the word, brad, unless you are a govt worker, you can always work harder and smarter, and improve your lot.  That “helping hand” you are looking for is on the end of your arm.
Have you had two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth?

Why do you do that?

In the first place, I don’t “love” it when people lie to try to downtalk America; you are wrong there.  I tell the truth as I see it.  What you think of me is none of my business.  If you have a problem with what I say, be honest about that, and don’t try to come at me sideways with an attempt to invalidate me with personal attack.  It reflects badly on your integrity.

Sorry you can’t understand simple English, Master Baiter.
As a real American, I believe in, and practice, the secret ballot.

Were you trying to make some sort of point here?  I can’t dumb it down any lower for you.

robert108 on April 14, 2008 at 05:13 pm

robert108.  Try describing it as the Australian ballot.  On topic:

The Commerce Department said U.S. retail sales were up 0.2 percent in March, slightly stronger than expected.

What is so difficult to understand?  .2 % means 2/10ths of 1% increase.
An increase is not a decrease, and therefore not a recession.  This recession talk seems to be more political than economic or factual.
