Alito Is In

The fillibuster has failed.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Republican-led Senate on Monday defeated a Democratic bid to block Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito -- clearing the way for confirmation of the 55-year-old conservative who could move the high court to the right.

The needed 60 votes were mustered in the 100-member Senate to approve a motion to end debate on President Bush's nominee. A confirmation vote is set for Tuesday. Alito has a commitment from a required simple majority to be approved.

As Ted Kennedy would say, the number of asthmatic-hating bigots on the high court has just increased by one.

Apparently he voted for Judge Alito.

Good for him.  The vote was 75-25 if I remember right

I must say I’m really disappointed. I was hoping the Dems would be stupid enough to mount a successful filibuster… Filibuster, Nuke, meltdown of the Democrat party… that would have been fun to watch tonight.. hehe

Dorgan voted against the filibuster (for a fair vote) but will vote against in the actual vote.

I don’t think the Democrats could stand the heat if they were to have actually filibustered a Supreme Court nominee.

[...] Alito is in.  The last chance for the opposition was a filibuster, but that got shot down today.  All that’s required now is a simple majority vote in the Senate.  With more Democrats crossing to Alito’s side than Republicans turning against him there’s no chance that he’ll lose.  So using such a harsh tactic at this stage in the game does little else but tell us that the person employing it is a desperate, bitter partisan.
