Alito Confirmation Hearings Start Today
The Alito confirmation hearings start today. Senators on the panel will give their opening statements, then Alito will be introduced and give an opening statement. Questioning will begin tomorrow.
Here's my prediction for how things are going to go: Alito is going to get beat up. There will be a lot of chest-thumping and pointed questions. Most of the Democrats will try to get Alito to proffer legal opinions to stated scenarios, and when he refuses these unreasonable requests he will be accused of "not answering the question" and "being less than forthcoming."
Ultimately, after the Dems feel they have dragged Alito through a sufficient amount of muck to satisfy their base Alito's nomination will go to a vote and he'll get between 60 and 65 "yeas."
As for the filibuster, I don't think it is going to happen. If it does happen, I think the Democrats should be forced to stand before Congress and the nation and dawdle on about how Sam Alito - respected legal professional, respected judge and recipient of a perfect rating from the American Bar Association - is an unacceptable nominee for the Supreme Court.
But I don't think it will come to that.
