Al Qaeda No Longer Exists

Strategypage:

February 28, 2006: Al Qaeda no longer exists. The feared international terrorist organization is now simply a brand name adopted by local terrorist groups. Osama bin Laden won't be collection franchising fees or royalties, but he will get a nod in his direction from those who are using the name he made infamous. "Al Qaeda in Iraq" and "Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula" are but two of the more famous autonomous spin-offs. The independence of "Al Qaeda in Iraq" can be seen from how the Iraqi branched ignored bin Laden pleas to ease off on attacking civilians. The Saudi "branch" has also gone its own way, and not been shy about saying so. . . .

Because al Qaeda no longer exists, it cannot be destroyed. But it can be neutralized. Just as the once feared Anarchists (the Al Qaeda of a century ago) were pretty much wiped out by the 1930s, but lived on in spirit. The Anarchist brand, and reputation, lives on with any bunch of spirited youngsters who are willing to break some windows, wear black, and invoke a long dead terrorist organization. Thus, there will come a day, hopefully soon, when al Qaeda will be just another buzzword for bad behavior.

Rob: Thanks for posting this.  I have been too busy to get to it yet, and I’m glad you got it out.  Look forward to future posting, now that I know how to do it.

Robert,

I was a little confused when you sent it to me.  You didn’t include a link to the article so I thought it was something you had written.  But then  I saw the date line and googled it.

I look forward to seeing some submitted posts from you.

Is this guy saying that we should get used to Al Qaeda?

Rob: I tried several times to get through to you, and left that off the later posts.  It was all my fault that the earlier attempts failed, so no worries.  As someone who has some knowledge of military matters, I have always thought our differential handling of OBL and Iraq to indicate just what this article says.  If one enemy has no "head", you don’t commit a large force to take it out.  It requires a lot of small groups of specialists, operating covertly.  I think the terrorists strategy is to sell us OBL as a phony target, and it has worked with the lefties, who divide our efforts with their politicking.  I’m pretty sure the Commander in Chief isn’t buying any of that, though, and continues to do the right thing.

MI: No, he’s saying that Al Qaeda has sold you gullible lefties a bill of goods.

He is saying that we should get used to the brand name that "Al Qaeda" has become.

This is actually something President Bush was on to a long time back.  He had a quote, something about not knowing where bin Laden is, that the lefties took out of context and bandied about everywhere...but if you really listened to what he said he was saying that bin Laden has been marginalized.  Oh sure he’s worth a lot in terms of symbolism, but the threat from terrorism doesn’t begin and end with bin Laden and his organization.  There are many autonomous groups out there, and while they may brand themselves "al Qaeda" we shouldn’t fool ourselves into thinking that they are part of one terror body.

They aren’t.

People have been saying this for years, so it’s hardly a bold insight.  Additionally, the point about getting OBL isn’t to crush al-Qaeda: it’s no more and no less to bring him to justice.  Lefties haven’t been "sold a bill of goods"; they never insisted that bringing OBL to justice would solve the larger problem of al-Qaeda.

jpe: I don’t define "justice" as committing a disproportionate number of assets to do something out of revenge.  Every leftie I know and hear in the MSM implies that getting OBL is the real "war on terror", so that dog won’t hunt, either.  Most lefties think the President is the problem, not Al Qaeda.  If we would just be nice to them and take them out to lunch, they would stop their terrorism.

jpe:  About that "justice" thing:  this isn’t gang violence in the ghetto, it’s war.  You don’t win a war by putting your enemy on trial, you do it by destroying his will to continue fighting against you.  Most lefties don’t understand that simple fact.
