Al Gore Wins An Emmy

For Current TV.  Which, if you don’t know what that is (who could blame you since nobody watches it) is essentially YouTube except that they put the videos on the television.

The win is a bit suspicious, though, as Al’s pet project was pretty much the only program nominated in the category (Interactive Television) thus ensuring him a win.  Seems almost...rigged or something.

Anyway, this should make up for Al getting gipped when he never received an award for inventing the Internet.

And to all the gypsies in the audience, I apologize.

I spelled “gipped” correctly.

Not according to me and Firefox. I did find a couple of dictionaries online that allow it!
But, then, if you “Win one for the Gipper”, who are you winning it for?

Wikipedia:

The Romani people (as a noun, singular Rom, plural Roma; sometimes Rrom, Rroma) or Romanies are an ethnic group living in many communities all over the world. The Roma are among the best known ethnic groups that appear in literature and folklore, and are often referred to as Gypsies or Gipsies, a term that is nowadays generally considered pejorative and is based on a mistaken belief of an origin in Egypt.

See Proof!  I spelled it right!

Early American works spelled the town of Plymouth’s name with an “i.” So the spelling has evolved.

The dictionary says I’m right, so I will stand back on that with smug satisfaction.

That is, pardon the expression, a bullshit charge. Wikipedia, while controversial does provide quick access to basic definitions and facts; and I am sure that Robert108, like myself, uses many dictionaries, online and in ancient relics like books to get at basic definitions of words, versus just making up definitions or relying upon street definitions.

I don’t think you hate Roma; I just think you’re ignorant (in the literal sense). I’m guessing you have had little to no interaction with Roma in your life, which leads you to think the term “gipped” is perfectly acceptable in regular conversation. You’re wrong in comparing it to “niggardly”; the more apt comparisons are to “faggot” and “kike.”

Neiman:

Wikipedia, while controversial does provide quick access to basic definitions and facts;

I agree with Neiman on this.

One should distrust any reference materials that does not include references.  From my experience, because Wiki generally gives a much more balanced account of all sides on a given issue due to the consensus forming process by which articles get generated, you can generally find a better account of current events on the Wiki than you ever will in the mainstream media, and certainly a more balanced list of references (usually nonexistent in MSM articles).  And once you have the Wiki account, you generally have enough ammo to go out and read primary sources on your own....

I’m not saying its perfect, but it’s a hell of a lot more accurate than e.g., the New York Times as a news source.  Yet people still treat the NYT as gospel, when they report on noncontroversial issues.  All I’m saying is people have a funny way of deciding what is “true” sometimes…

Absolutely.  Found this in Merriam-Webster when I entered “gipped”:

When my eldest son was in high school, he took a computer class. One of their exercises was to review the “custom” dictionaries of the computers the high school students had access to.
What they found, was that whenever the computer would highlight a misspelled word, these future wikipedia editors would hit “Add to dictionary”!
After that, it wasn’t that there was no value to the spell check after that, it was just that you could not rely upon it because of the indiscriminate editing.

Right.  As compared to your years of extensive contact with the Roma people.

But you’re right.  There aren’t a lot of Roma people in North Dakota.  I wasn’t even aware that “gipped” referred to “gypsies.”

Guess you learn something new every day.

According to the American Heritage Dictionary (and yes, they have a book version so it’s not just the internet you bunch of Luddites) it can be spelled “gyp” or “gip.”

Speaking of obscure racial slurs, have you guys seen this database?

There’s stuff there I’ve never heard of (not that I’m an expect on race-based insults), and some stuff I never thought would be offensive to anyone.

Like “amigo”?  Isn’t that friend in Spanish?  If I call someone my “amigo” am I insulting them?

I think people need to relax a little bit, up to and including our own Davey.

Rob, I suggest a contest for the best racial/ethnic slur, which you can then submit to TRSD.  With only 2642 entries, I’m sure it could use some more padding!

Carrick on September 17, 2007 at 03:17 pm

Just so it isn’t “gimp”, which would offend the handicapped, er, I mean “the differently abled”.
