Al Gore Shamelessly Blames Global Warming for Myanmar Cyclone

This is a new low for Gore:

“And as we’re talking today, Terry, the death count in Myanmar from the cyclone that hit there yesterday has been rising from 15,000 to way on up there to much higher numbers now being speculated,” Gore said. “And last year a catastrophic storm from last fall hit Bangladesh. The year before, the strongest cyclone in more than 50 years hit China – and we’re seeing consequences that scientists have long predicted might be associated with continued global warming.”

Gore claimed global warming is forcing ocean temperatures to rise, which is causing storms, including cyclones and hurricanes, to intensify.

What a scumbag.  There are bodies rotting for lack of people to bury them and Gore’s out there pushing his global warming scam.  Incidentally Gore’s profited perhaps an hundred million dollars with his scam.

Gore says that “warmer ocean temperatures” are causing this.  The problem is that ocean temperatures have if anything cooled.

They tried this same BS after Katrina and were promptly informed that global warming, if it were happening, doesn’t cause more hurricanes.  They have their own pattern which has had nothing to do with higher temperatures.

Gore is a total piece of garbage.

Let’s suppose that the Earth warms by 10°C in the next 1000 years, and there’s nothing we can do about it.  That is, totally natural, totally unstoppable.

Should we not plan for this if (hypothetically) we knew it were coming?

One thing for sure is the oceans continue to rise, and they’ve been doing it for millennia.  Clearly that should be anticipated and planned for.

That sure sounds like the conservative thing to do.

Hmmm, Pelosi, Gingrich, Robertson and Sharpton in global warming ads yeah that really ups the credibility factor.

Should we not plan for this if (hypothetically) we knew it were coming?

Or it might cool, or things might stay the same.  Is Newt saying we need to prepare for those eventualities.  No.

The fact is he’s bought into the fallacy that we must do something to combat global warming.  Newt thinks he’s clever by proposing “market based” solutions which amount to bribing people with their own (tax breaks) and other peoples “cash prizes.”

The fact is that IF we conservatives buy into the garbage, we’ve lost the war.  Newt’s plan won’t work because we aren’t warming up the globe.  So when it fails (or if it succeeds) we’ll move closer to the goal of socializing our economy.

If you want to think about an example of “market based reforms” you can use the ethanol fiasco, which doesn’t contribute much new energy, isn’t all that good for the environment and is very expensive where we pay 1)at the pump; 2)to the taxman for the subsidies; and 3) in higher costs of food.

Meanwhile if Newt had a clue he’d realize that the true market rewards efficiency.  As this post on Willism shows the freer American economy is outperforming the countries that signed up for Kyoto.

A conservative would keep the government OUT of the market not think you’re smarter than the market and propose whacky solutions that will probably cause more problems then they solve.

Save The World—Ignore An Environmentalist

Running diesel vehicles on biofuels is a good thing, right? Not always, according to Greenpeace Argentina. It seems that the export of soybeans from Argentina is causing more pollution than was initially estimated. Also, too much of Argentina’s native forests are being mowed down for the soybeans. These issues are in stark contrast with two of Greenpeace’s stated charters: (1) catalyzing an energy revolution to address the number one threat facing our planet: climate change and (2) supporting sustainable agriculture by encouraging socially and ecologically responsible farming practices.

Climate change - might as well not talk about it since it is out of our control.  As far as preparing for it, we have no idea which way to go. Hell, we have trouble preparing for hurricanes for which we have a lot more data.

Energy efficiency - nothing to do their either as the market place is the determining factor. i.e. assuming energy efficiency is cost effective, it will happen in what ever form is most productive.

Switching to fleurescent light-bulbs is energy efficient.  Engines that require less gasoline is also energy effecient.

The question is: how much of your rights do you want to give up to be energy effecient?

I think, don’t quote me on this, but by 2012 (or 2014), Fleurescent light-bulbs will only be sold, this is part of a bill I don’t agree with.  It expands government power.

You are definitely right about it being cost effective docdave.  That is probably the first factor looked into making energy efficient products, next comes is consumer interest, and then last, our rights.

No wait, make consumer interest first! ; )

Also, too much of Argentina’s native forests are being mowed down for the soybeans.

They don’t use soyboeans grown in the Amazon rain forrest region for biofuel, under international treaty.  Most of that comes from the southern grasslands….

Very little of the destruction of the rain forest is associated with biofuels.  As to the pollution aspect, of course Greenpeace objects.  As far as I can tell, their goal is the end of our modern civilization.

Is this a real conversation? It is more than obvious that a changing climate results in climate change, how can you even argue that?

It is perfectly acceptable to postulate that the unusual amount of record breaking and devastating storms are a result of changing climate.

There is nothing un-American about that; love or hate the messenger.

Evan on May 7, 2008 at 04:01 pm

The climate has always been changing, even before man.

The problem with Newt is that his objectives are likely a waste of money and counterproductive to what actually happens.

Since Mr Fahrenheit only lived a few hundred years ago, while we were in the little ice age it wouldn’t be at all unexpected to see record temperatures now as we recover to the temperatures that we saw before that.

It is perfectly acceptable to postulate that the unusual amount of record breaking and devastating storms are a result of changing climate.

First what exactly is really “unusual”?  We haven’t had more storms, more violent storms or anything of that sort.  Compare weather extremes now (drought, rain, storms) against the 1930s, and you’ll find that period, which predates any human generated changes, to be more active on all fronts.  So again what is “unusual”?

Secondly, it’s been cooling for the last ten years, returning at least temporarily to a 1970’s like climate.  What is your mechanism of “climate change’” that will produce your supposed more extreme weather, when the climate has been actually getting milder?

Incidentally Gore’s profited perhaps an hundred million dollars with his scam.

The Alliance for Climate Change received 100% of the profits that Al Gore made from his book ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ and the proceeds from the movie. Paramount Classics who owns the movie has as well donated 5% of the box office sales to the Alliance for Climate Change.

<A HREF="http://www.climatecrisis.net/blog/?p=29">link</A

Gore says that “warmer ocean temperatures” are causing this.

The quote when put back into context says, “and we’re seeing consequences that scientists have long predicted might be associated with continued global warming,” He goes on to say, “It’s also important to note that the emerging consensus among the climate scientists is although any individual storm can’t be linked singularly to global warming,”

The problem is that ocean temperatures have if anything cooled.

Robert Bindschadler, a glaciologist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, collected temperatures from ships and buoys which, “showed a warming of all oceans.”

<A HREF="http://www.spacemart.com/reports/NASA_Scientist_Claims_Warmer_Ocean_Waters_Reducing_Ice_Worldwide.html">link</A

They tried this same BS after Katrina and were promptly informed that global warming, if it were happening, doesn’t cause more hurricanes.

Correct. There has not been conclusive evidence to make a correlation between ocean temperatures and the frequency of hurricanes or cyclones. Now, if Al Gore is a ‘total piece of garbage,’ then I expect much harsher language towards President Bush and McCain eating cake as the people in New Orleans were ‘rotting.’

[codeImage and video hosting by TinyPic]

McCain’s ‘spiritual advisor’ Pastor Hagee claims the cause of Katrina was because, “there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came.” Al Gore’s says that climate change might of increased the intensity of cyclone and Hagee that it was a man in the sky, which is more illogical?

Tennessee 54 killed, a tornado sucked an 11-month-old boy and his mother from their home. They were found later in a field. The child survived in good condition, but his mother was dead.

I think that would discribe you.  You twit, nobody said that nothing is happening.  All some of us are saying is that climate change is the norm that has been going on since the creation of this planet which indeed predates humans.  What nobody knows is what direction the climate is going, warmer or cooler.  This year so far the climate in virtually all the world has been cooler with 100+ year records being broken for snow and cold.  The major component affecting the weather is probably our sun, you know that thing that keeps you from turning into an ice ball.

A recent NASA report concludes that there has been no “global warming” for approximately 10 years, due to the fallacious models used by junk scientists. Does this mean that neo-pagan Al Gore is wrong about man made warming?  Nah… In a 1999 article in Nature magazine, the case is “made” that global warming causes global cooling.  Therefore, no matter what happens, global warming by humans is the culprit.  The cult of “Mother Earth” has it covered both ways.

“NASA has just admitted a whopping mistake in its temperature data! 1998 is no longer the warmest year of the past century in the U.S. It falls to #2 with 1934 now being the warmest year. And #3 is now 1921, not 2006. It had been claimed that six of the ten hottest years in U.S. history had occurred since 1995, but now only three of the top ten are from the last ten years (1998, 2006, 1999). And 1998 was a peak year for El Nino, a phenomenon unrelated to atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, that also affected 1999 temperature data. The formerly high-ranking years 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004 fell well down the leader board—behind even 1900!” -  http://amlibpub.com/essays/surprising-global-warming-news.html. According to your link Gore has warned that we’ll see more storms because of global warming.

But he did say that any one storm can’t be linked to global warming.

I fail to see that makes this post wrong, when he’s addressing more storms like the current tragedy being caused by global warming.

Furthermore the Goddard Institute for Space Studies has been caught time and time again putting out incorrect warming data.  We all know about them siting the collection points above air conditioning warm air exhausts and on black top parking lots. Here’s another one where they just plain changed the data.

If there was data behind their position they wouldn’t have to manipulate the data.

Regardless of how you want to fudge the data, Jimmy, the fact is that the warmest year on record was 1998.  And we have also have been in a cooling spell for about five years.  Even the more ardent global warmingests admit that.

Finally, to follow up on what Whistler said, according to the climate models, the warming period from 1850-1980 occurred naturally, yet much of the ice loss was from that period.  It is is true that he ice loss substantially accelerated around 1980, so if we blame the warming from circa 1980 to 2000 entirely on humans, then we clearly are contributing to the circumstance (not quite willing to call it a “problem” since this sort of thing happens naturally too).

Carrick, I didn’t fudge any data.  The point is, some asshole edited the audio of the interview with Gore to change the meaning of what he said, and this whole thing is a dishonest smear job.

Yes, by some measurements 1998 was the warmest year on record, but as you are well aware, this was due to an unusually strong el nino event that year.  However, the 5-year moving average of annual global surface temperature has moved upward dramatically since 1998.

Jimmy: the fudging is in what amounts to a post-hoc decision on how to manipulate the data to get the desired effect.

The other fudge is looking at 1850-200x instead of 1980-200x.  Generally it’s accepted that humans had an insignificant effect on global mean temperaure until roughly 1980.

What’s magical about 5 years?  Nothing.  There’s an annual (1-year) forcing and an 11-year (solar cycle) forcing.  If you average to remove the 1-year, then you need a two-year window, not 5.  The only thing 5 does is produce a bigger end-effect that obscures a very real downturn in temperature, or at least slow-down if one focusses on GISS.

Which raises the question of why you are focusing on the temperature series, GISS, which shows the most dramatic temperature rise?  This given that many of the algorithms they use are not publicly released.  Without peaking at the results, the satellite data really should be the best way to go in terms of accessing global mean temperature; you don’t have the issues with a sparse array with measurements being performed in almost an uncontrolled fashion (seen Andrew Watt’s site if you want to see what I mean by that).

Taking your beloved 5-year average, the Earth has warmed by 0.55 C since 1980 according to GISS, by about 0.45 C according to Hadcrut but by a mere 0.2C according to VORTEX (satellite) measurements.  Given that the satellite measure in general are more robust than surface-based measures this doesn’t show the red flag the global warming crowd are looking for does it?
