Air America Pretty Much Just Paid Advertising For Democrats

Advertising that’s paid for, unfortunately, by the liberal radio network’s creditors.

It’s hardly a coincidence that Air America debuted in time for the 2004 presidential campaign or that the bankruptcy filing was put off long enough so that creditors actions won’t stop broadcasts before the Nov. 7 election. As if the willingness to lose money weren’t already obvious, over a year ago the network started asking listeners to donate money to keep the programs on the air.

Air America merely follows a grand tradition of circumvention by the very people who have supported campaign-finance regulation. George Soros donated millions to help pass McCain-Feingold, but was quick to work around it so that his big dollars could keep flowing. During the 2004 presidential campaign,Mr. Soros was prohibited from giving money directly to his preferred candidate, Howard Dean, so he gave $15 million to MoveOn.org so that it could raise the money for Mr. Dean.

The big innovation for Air America was using the bankruptcy laws to turn non-Democrats into involuntary campaign donors. Not only are Democratic “investors” out in the cold, but landlords, limo services, law firms, stations that sold Air America air time and state governments are owed money. Apparently, the network still owes the Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club, a New York City program for poor kids, a whopping $875,000 — money that was transferred from the club by its former director. But even while these people are being stiffed, since the bankruptcy Air America’s founders brazenly announced they are starting a new left-wing radio network.

Read the whole thing.

That’s a feature, not a bug, of our bankruptcy laws.  If NRO doesn’t like our laws, they should quit whining about them and lobby to change them.

I hope they go after those guys the same as the Worldcom and Enron guys.

[W]hat you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I predicted this trainwreck before their first broadcast. Leftards always whine about fairness, and yet they screw over everyone they come in contact with.

Not only is it paid advertising for Democrats, but the Gloria Wise money came from the taxpayers.  I dare suggest that their prosecution for fraud might be far more straightforward than Enron’s or Worldcom’s.

Fox New Channel lost hundreds of millions for its first 5 years on the air.  The Washington Times and Weekly Standard continue to lose money today.  Things like the WaTimes and Weekly Standard aren’t expected to make money; they are considered a propaganda expense.

The only difference between their debt and Air America’s is that they’ve always had someone to bail them out financially.  Air America is seeking bankruptcy protextion because they weren’t able to come to deal on their debt with Multicultural Broadcasting.

I don’t know why this writer is singling out Air America for having debt.

Let’s compare us to radio.

How much did Rush Limbaugh’s group lose the first five years?

How about Sean Hannity?

In fact Larry King made some money too.

Why compare with TV news (which is a huge undertaking compared to a DJ and a mic)?

TW: There is a difference between “losing money” in the first years of a startup, because it is mainly an accounting matter.  The cash flow may be adequate, but paying off the initial expense puts you technically “in the red”.  Air America, on the other hand, has never had a positive cash flow, and only lasted as long as it did through what amounts to subsidy and charity.  That’s the difference between AA and Rush.

The only legitimate role of government with regard to economics is to prevent fraud and provide a remedy- civil and criminal penalties- in case of fraud.

People have the mistaken notion that the free market has no rules.  But it most certainly does.  All our problems are due to government meddling.

I agree Robert, but our newest drive by leftie was muddying the waters comparing the business to Foxnews.

There’s no reason to lose money on talk radio as long as you’ve got a product people want to listen to.

TW: I agree.  Lefties can’t do accounting.  Witness Enron: prospered under Clinton, went broke under Bush.

Rush and Hannity are not networks.
Air America and Fox News are networks.
Why compare Hannity to a network?

When was Bill Clinton Enron’s accountant?

Actually, John, the “Excellence in Broadcasting Network” (Rush) is every bit as much a network as Air America--actually more of one, because stations actually pay for the product instead of vice versa.  The Enron comparison is apt, too; Enron could have only succeeded with favorable credit and government intervention--goofy “deregulation” and implementation of Kyoto.  Liberal radio only succeeds with multimillion dollar subsidies.  (e.g. NPR/PBS).

Robert Perry on October 30, 2006 at 06:23 am

John, the problem is that nobody wanted to listen to the product that Air America was putting out.

If they did they would not have had to lease airtime to “sell” their shows.
